Dynamic language translation, mathematics and computer simulation
Friedman, Dan J., Jr., "Use of a Language Translator for Small Program Transition during Small System Growth", IBM Systems Manufacturing Division, Poughkeepsie, Technical Publication, TR 20.0442, (April, 1972)
Abstract: Managers of data processing installations should avoid several common traps when translating old pograms to run on a new system. Inefficiencies may arise thorugh this approach. While the use of a language translator may seem to be a tempting solution to growth problems, translation or emulation to enable the use of new hardware with old softwater may perpetuate old unit-record logic throughout the evolution of a data processing system. Such translation should be used only for an intermediate step in system growth.
This report points out some of the dangers of such an approach to growth; it evaluates the advantages of using a language translator (which are also applicable to the use of emulators); and, it proposes a technique which makes translation more effective.
Friedman, Dan J., Jr., "Measuring and Evaluating Systems Performance", IBM Systems Manufacturing Division, Poughkeepsie, Technical Publication, TR 20.0427, (June 1971)
Abstract: This report presents a survey of concetps, evaluative schemes, and measurement techniques used in the evaluation of systems. It discusses measurement project planning and implementation, hardware measurement devicves, anmd documentation and use of measurement results. The report is oriented towards measurement techniques, and gives brief mention to predictive techniques, such as simulation, which is discussed widely in the literature. It also contains a glossary , a reference bibliography6 for literature in the field, as well as an appendix of OS/360 performance considerations.
