Burger, Harriet. "Bioaerosols: prevalence and health effects in the indoor environment." Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology 86, no. 5 (1990): 687-701. [Editor's note: this Google scholar citation probably has the the incorrect name. The researcher is probably Dr. Harriet Burge - Ed.]
Summary excerpt:
Assessing the role of bioaerosols in residence-related symptoms involves
(1) determining that symptoms are related to the residence by medical examination and careful questioning,
(2) connecting reported symptoms with known or hypothesized effects of bioaerosols,
(3) examining the residence for bioaerosol risk factors such as overcrowding/poor ventilation, inappropriate outdoor air intrusion, and dampness/standing water, (4) and finally, if no obvious risk factors are present, air sampling.
Air sampling should always be a last resort and should use a reliable volumetric method. Particulate samplers, such as the Burkard personal spore trap, are inexpensive alternatives to viable particle samplers and will provide data on most organisms implicated in hypersensitivity diseases.
Interpretation of residential bioaerosol sample data requires both qualitative and quantitative comparison with adjacent outdoor air and examination of aerosol changes related to domestic activities.
Recommendations that should lead to a decrease in indoor bioaerosols include the use of air conditioning to allow limitation of outdoor aerosols, prevention of dampness or moisture intrusion, and discouraging the use of humidifying devices other than steam.
Crinnion, Walter J. "Sauna as a valuable clinical tool for cardiovascular, autoimmune, toxicant-induced and other chronic health problems." Alternative Medicine Review 16, no. 3 (2011): 215-226.
Abstract Excerpt:
Sauna therapy has been used for hundreds of years in the Scandinavian region as a standard health activity. Studies document the effectiveness of sauna therapy for persons with hypertension, congestive heart failure, and for post-myocardial infarction care.
Some individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic fatigue, chronic pain, or addictions also find benefit. Existing evidence supports the use of saunas as a component of depuration (purification or cleansing) protocols for environmentally-induced illness.
While far-infrared saunas have been used in many cardiovascular studies, all studies applying sauna for depuration have utilized saunas with radiant heating units. Overall, regular sauna therapy (either radiant heat or far-infrared units) appears to be safe and offers multiple health benefits to regular users.
One potential area of concern is sauna use in early pregnancy because of evidence suggesting that hyperthermia might be teratogenic. (Altern Med Rev 2011;16(3):215-225)
Duda, Marty. "The medical risks and benefits of sauna, steam bath, and whirlpool use." The Physician and sportsmedicine 15, no. 5 (1987): 170-182.
Abstract:
Saunas, steam baths, and whirlpools—popular fixtures at health clubs—are safe means of relaxation, if used prudently. But ignoring the recommendations for moderate, commonsense enjoyment of these baths may expose users to health risks.
Horne, J. A., and A. J. Reid. "Night-time sleep EEG changes following body heating in a warm bath." Electroencephalography and clinical neurophysiology 60, no. 2 (1985): 154-157. Abstract:
Six healthy female volunteers (22–24 years), physically untrained (unfit), sat in baths of warm or cool water for 90 min, between 14.30 h and 17.30 h, on separate occasions. In the former condition (HOT), rectal temperature (Tr) rose by an average of 1.8°C, and in the latter (COOL), a thermoneutral condition, there was a nil Tr change.
All-night sleep EEGs were monitored after both occasions and on baseline nights. Following COOL, there was no significant change in any sleep parameter. After HOT there were significant increases in: sleepiness at bed-time, slow wave sleep, and stage 4 sleep. REM sleep was reduced, particularly in the first REM sleep period.
Mooventhan, A., and L. Nivethitha. "Scientific evidence-based effects of hydrotherapy on various systems of the body." North American journal of medical sciences 6, no. 5 (2014): 199.
Excerpt from introduction:
Hydrotherapy is the external or internal use of water in any of its forms (water, ice, steam) for health promotion or treatment of various diseases with various temperatures, pressure, duration, and site.
It is one of the naturopathic treatment modality used widely in ancient cultures including India, Egypt, China, etc.
Press, Edward. "The health hazards of saunas and spas and how to minimize them." American journal of public health 81, no. 8 (1991): 1034-1037.
Abstract:
BACKGROUND: The rapidly increasing number of spas, hot tubs, and saunas intensifies the potentials for deaths from hyperthermia and drowning. METHODS: I analyzed 54 such deaths reported to me by 55 medical examiners and coroners in the United States and 104 deaths reported to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
RESULTS: Only seven of the 158 deaths analyzed occurred in saunas. All of the remaining deaths occurred in spas, jacuzzis, or hot tubs, which were far more numerous. The chief risk factors identified were alcohol ingestion, heart disease, seizure disorders, and cocaine ingestion (alone or in combination with alcohol ingestion). These factors accounted for 71 or 44.7% of the 159 fatalities.
Of these risk factors, alcohol represented 38%; heart disease, 31%; seizure disorders, 17%; and cocaine ingestion, alone or in combination with alcohol, 14%. Sixty-one of the 151 spa-associated deaths occurred in children under 12 years of age. Accidental drownings from uncovered or improperly covered spas and, to a lesser extent, entrapment by suction, were the chief causes of childhood drownings.
CONCLUSIONS: Children and older persons who have heart disease or seizure disorders or who use alcohol or cocaine are especially vulnerable. Recommended preventive measures include shortening the time of exposure, lowering the temperature, establishing safety standards for covers and for baffles for suction outlets, and using warning notices.
Thompson, Lisa M., Michael Clark, Brie Cadman, Eduardo Canúz, and Kirk R. Smith. "Exposures to high levels of carbon monoxide from wood-fired temazcal (steam bath) use in highland Guatemala." International journal of occupational and environmental health 17, no. 2 (2011): 103-112.
Abstract:
The temazcal is a wood-fired steam bath used in the rural highlands of Guatemala for bathing and healing. We measured carbon monoxide (CO) among 288 participants in 72 temazcales.
Participants were drawn from communities who participated in the RESPIRE (Randomized Exposure Study of Pollution Indoors and Respiratory Effects) chimney stove intervention trial. Temazcal CO exposures were extremely high, averaging 431 parts per million (time-weighted average).
Compared to kitchen wood-smoke exposures, the temazcal contributes significantly to weekly exposures, despite the fact that the population spends less time in the temazcal than in the kitchen. This report
1) describes temazcal use patterns;
2) reports participants' signs and symptoms during temazcal use;
3) models the distribution of temazcal CO concentrations;
4) assesses reliability of exhaled breath CO as a biomarker of CO exposure; and
5) provides a proportional analysis of CO concentrations from temazcal use, as compared to kitchen concentrations.
Zumsteg, Isabelle S., and Caroline S. Weckerle. "Bakera, a herbal steam bath for postnatal care in Minahasa (Indonesia): Documentation of the plants used and assessment of the method." Journal of ethnopharmacology 111, no. 3 (2007): 641-650.
Abstract:
Bakera, a steam bath prepared with various plants, is a traditional method used in Minahasa (North Sulawesi, Indonesia) for recuperation after childbirth.
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 midwives and 166 mothers in different villages of Minahasa, in order to document the preparation and plants used for the bakera. Overall, the use of 60 different plant species for the bakera was recorded.
Among the 10 most frequently cited bakera plants, eight are essential oil plants, which are usually cultivated in the kitchen gardens and often used as spices. The therapeutic effects of thermotherapy and aromatherapy contribute to the effectiveness of the bakera.
Thermotherapy soothes symptoms such as muscular strain, heaviness in the limbs, edema, loss of appetite, and constipation, whereas the essential oils of the plants used have an immuno-stimulant, antiseptic, and antiphlogistic effect.
If applied under the guidance of an experienced person, during the late childbed, the bakera can be regarded as an effective and safe method for recuperation after child birth.
Both private and public steam rooms or residential steam showers or "steam baths" have been in popular and widespread use since Roman times.
Provided that the steam generator installation is performed properly and provided that basic safety procedures spending time in warm steamy room can be both relaxing and healthy.
