Moffat electric range & oven repair:
Moffit electric range repairs discussed here include a question about use of asbestos insulation in a 1950's Moffat electric range and oven, repairs to a broken Moffat oven door, and wiring diagrams for the Moffat electric range.
Do Moffatt stoves contain asbestos? If so, where?

@Anonymous,
The temperature accuracy of oven control is a common problem and not unique to this Moffat brand.
You could try replacing the thermostat sensor probe.
What we did was to write down a calibration scale so that we could actually see what temperature would be achieved by which dial setting.

On 2021-10-23 by inspectapedia.com.moderator (mod) - troubleshooting Moffat range with oven heating elements not working
@Dhyana,
OK so if the element was actually tested, I'd expect a technician to work backwards:
by checking for the presence or absence of power at the terminals to which the heating element connects, and if not there working backwards testing the wiring for damage, a break, a poor connector, to the controls themselves.
On 2021-10-23 by Dhyana
@inspectapedia.com.moderator, Thanks, I was told by two people that the element is fine, so the problem is originating elsewhere.
On 2021-10-22 by inspectapedia.com.moderator (mod)
@Dhyana,
It's possible that the bottom heating elements are burned-out;
did they people "look" or did they actually test the heating elements?
Any electric stove repair person and many general appliance repair people know how to test a heating element to see if it's working;
You might find a generic replacement element of about the right size and shape that will work.
BUT before calling anyone, see if there is burned food or crud at the heating element connectors (with the stove disconnected from electrical power) and if so try cleaning those up.

The Moffat stove oven
Another photo of my Moffat stove in Nova Scotia, Canada
I’m located near New Glasgow NS CA, and have an older electric Moffat Stove. (See photos.) Both ovens now only turn on to broil, not any other temperature.
Two handymen looked at it said that the elements in the (double) ovens are fine. I called a local appliance repair company, but they did not want to deal with an older stove.
I have three questions:
1. I’m wondering whether you know the year and/or model?
2. Do you know of any repair people in Nova Scotia who might be able to help with this?
3. Do you have any idea what might be causing the problem?

@Kim P,
In the article above we give some sources for Moffat parts;
In addition we see used Moffat stove parts including burner parts coming up from time to time on various internet sites like eBay; when I needed an oven door I posted my requirement on eBay: (you 'll need the brand and model number, part description, and if possible, part number from the manual for your 1964 Moffat gas stove model;)
It took a few months, then my oven door showed up and I bought it, received it, installed it with no trouble
Some burner parts are close to generic but I suspect those gas burner head rings have to be close to exact or they're not safe.
I would also try contacting some of the stove parts suppliers given above; if you have the exact diameter measurements on your burner rings, they may have a close-enough part that's low-cost and worth testing for safe and proper operation.
As a last and most-expensive resort, there are companies who can duplicate any part from scratch in their machine shop; the old car restoration people have been doing this for critical engine parts for decades.

@PJD,
If the damage is only to the plastic handle itself, there are generic replacements that can be fitted to suit until you (if you're a restorer) find an actual Moffat burner control knob for sale on Ebay or a similar source; we once waited a year but the part then showed-up.
The example I show below is a Sears Range Surface Element Knob (White) 8523215 replacement sold by Sears Parts Direct https://www.searspartsdirect.com/
You'll want to examine the shape of the shaft behind the Moffat control knob - usually a rounded shaft with one-side flattened to form a "D" shape, and then to measure its diameter before you waste time buying too many replacement Moffat knobs that don't fit.
Some range control replacement knobs include a bushing or adapter sleeve that can help fit the replacement.
Shown here, a replacement Sears electric range control knob.

That sure looks like a lift-off drain cover of some sort, perhaps for use over an existing stove burner, or as a grease drain, but frankly I'm not sure Ray;
Over its life Moffat appliances has displayed a "Moffat" logo in a variety of fonts and styles as does the current incarnation (selling commercial cooking equipment). I've looked through those and not seen an exact match. There are a few other companies and products that used the Moffat name too,

An electrical fire of any sort is dangerous, risking a building fire or an injury to you or other occupants.
If the problem is confined to the burner itself, it might be replaceable by a standard generic part, but for safety the burner connections and wiring need to be inspected for safe condition.
Perhaps you can post photos of the stove and of its data tag and of the damage - one photo per comment - and we can research replacement burners for older Moffat stoves a bit further.

I have seen online vendors in many forums, eBay, Etsy, TubeDepot, Amazon, and Vatican, as well as independent antique appliance manufacturers who offer parts for older Moffat stoves. I'd search for "buy control knobs for antique Moffat stove"
I've had success in finding older range or stove parts by entering a detailed accurate description on these sites and then waiting - sometimes for a year or more - for the exact parts to show up for sale.
However, if the controls you have are workable and clean and in good condition, they may be better than you'll find without a long wait. Below is an example of such controls listed at Etsy.

Without a photo I can't say anything about what sort of plug you found on an older Moffat electric range, but in any case, if you're going to have an electrical receptacle installed to plug-in (rather than hard-wire) any electric range in a current building , you'd use something like an Eaton Wiring 50 Amp NEMA 10-50R 125V/250V Range Power Receptacle and matching wall plug and power cord like this one from Everbilt for the range to connect to the receptacle.

"The trades-person requires a "rating plate" " - I'm unclear on the requirement for certifying an antique cookstove as meeting modern standards and codes.
Most likely it doesn't and most-likely there is no such existing data plate for that stove model, though you might search through various photos of older 1920s Moffat ranges to see what sort of data tags were affixed.
The Moffat stove data tags I've found are on the page above. By the 1950s we begin to see some data showing volts and cycles of current. Nothing more.

Hello. I'm writing from Ontario, Canada. I have a vintage Moffat gas cooking stove, which needs some professional work. I believe the unit is from the late 1920s. The trades-person requires a "rating plate" (i.e. the plate affixed to the stove showing model info, safety standards approval, etc.).
The stove doesn't have a rating plate attached to it, so I'm looking to see if I can find one, or related data for this model.
Any suggestions/advice on this rating plate issue would be greatly appreciated, as I love the stove and wish to keep using it. Thanks.

Watch out: I am scared to answer pretending I know for sure because of the possibility that you get killed or set the house on fire. Is hubby familiar with safe and proper electrical wiring? If not, bail and get help.
That warning issued,
If at all possible, find a wiring diagram for your stove. Often it's glued to the back of the appliance and occasionally to the underside of a panel. That would tell us for sure what the manufacturer intended.
We've also got some wiring diagrams for Moffat stoves on the page above but those could differ from your specific model. In the wiring diagram it's pretty easy to follow the wires from the power hook-up for the electric range to the individual controls and burners.
Below I've labelled your photo with a reasonable guess at the wiring connections. Notice that the center terminal itself has two wires running to it? That's probably the neutral side of each of two burner circuits.
When just one circuit is energized the burner is in low-heat range, when both are energized the burner is in high heat range. Some electric range burners use a smaller inner-ring for low heat, a larger outer ring for medium heat, and both rings for high heat. But your Moffat range may differ.
I SUSPECT from what I THINK I see i the photo, you have
Watch out: later information from the reader indicates that the wiring in this photo is NOT CORRECT.
If this is the arrangement, then when the burner control connects either black or white to neutral you get 120V through that circuit, while if the control (IF it can) connects black to red you get 240VAC through that circuit.
So burners might offer ranges of heat using 1, 2, or 3 switch configurations.
From the observation that there are 2 bare wires in the connector center screw that's probably the neutral (white) and the black or red connect to the other two terminals.
Watch out:Hubby ought to know how to use a VOM or DMM to test the leads to see what is being delivered.

Before calling a technician but taking care not to break something and cause a gas leak, you might see if a fine wire will unclog the gas pilot orifice. I have on occasion found an insect inside a little opening. Food or grease can also block it.

On the original burner with four wires if probably used to separate 110 volt or 120 volt circuits to heat to or rather one of two concentric heating elements to give a range of temperatures at that burner.
When your new burner only has two terminals it's only going to heat one range. If you need to use that burner for sure that you cap off the unused wires so that you don't have an electrical short, shock injury or fire.

HI Mark. I just buy a 1949 and I'm starting my restoration project. Do you this switch? the white one?
Marcel
If you're referring to that white toggle switch (circled in red) usually that switch, as it does not include a temperature control, is not for a burner nor oven; rather the switch typically controls either a light, perhaps an oven light, on and off or in some re-wirings it may switch the utility receptacle to the right of the controls.
On late 1940s and early to mid 1950's Moffat stoves it was common to see a white toggle switch at the left of the control dials on the stove front, and a two-prong electrical receptacle utility outlet on stove front to the right of the controls - as shown in this except photo from a 1953 Moffat electric range [below] -
That white toggle switch (circled in red) switches an oven-light on and off.

Thank you for that added detail, you're absolutely right. That Moffat electric range burner connector is not the usual flat-spade type plug-in used on most electric ranges.
If we can't find a Moffat OEM connector burner, I'd consider replacing the receiving female connector in the Moffat range top to allow it to accept a generic replacement. An example we show below is made by ApplianceMate, is generic, and involves simple wiring that can be installed by any electrician or appliance repairman or homeowner who is familiar with safe electrical wiring practices.

@Corrinna,
- temp fix: take the electrician's advice
- longer term fix, or if you can wait: buy a repair switch that fits, doesn't match exactly, but works, and install that - there are a lot of online vendors of replacement controls for electric stove burners
- and live with that unless you're trying to do a historic restoration - in which case there are online vendors on eBay and elsewhere who occasionally have used Moffat controls for sale.
We don't have a specific referral in Toronto, but there are indeed appliance repair technicians in Toronto who can repair an electric stove. It's often possible to replace a hard-to-find electrical switch with a generic model that works perfectly well.

Also if you could contact us by email to provide a PDF of the wiring diagram and owners manual that would be very helpful to other readers who own similar Moffat Fiesta stoves.

I am now the proud owner of a 1961 Moffat Fiesta complete with wiring diagram and owners manual! (Model BC-32) The electrician who just added a ne Whitley for it, tested it out. Unfortunately there are 2 issues. 1) the small front burner tripped the fuse. The electrician took off the panel behind the controls and determined the temperature/on/off switch is grounding for some reason and should be replaced.
He left the switch disconnected. 2) the back burners also tripped the fuse. A spark came from the rear right corner of the drawer where the safety switch is.
(The safety switch prevents the back burners from heating up when the drawer is closed) He tested the safety switch as well as the temperature/on/off switches and could not find anything wrong. He suggested I don’t replace the fuse until it’s looked at by an appliance technician.
Do I have 2 questions; does any one know where I can get replacement switches and does anyone know a technician in or around Toronto that can repair this? Worst case, the electrician suggested I use one of the working temp switches from the back burner for the front burner. I would just have to deal with no back burners. Any advice would be great! Thanks!!

The model number of the brown Moffat Gourmet stove is 30L260W, Serial number 001285.
How about that spelling checker! I wrote “Fuses are hidden behind a stainless steel trim piece...” They are, of course, different colours; green for the oven, 30 Amps, and there are two of them; third from the left, and third from the right. Make sure to flip the breaker off at the electrical panel before you open up the back of the stove, because there is a bare copper wire ( bus bar) running horizontally feeding 240 volts to those fuses; and I got nipped through the finger on it some years ago. It felt Hot!

I have Mom’s Moffat Gourmet electric range with rotisserie on top.There are ten glass fuses in a row on the rear vertical surface a foot above the cooktop elements. The fuses are green behind a stainless steel trim piece which is attached by two threaded knobs. The oven kept blowing fuses whenever I turned it on.
The oven elements checked out OK; and I have ordered a new generic oven thermostat control. I found it at <appliance parts hq.ca> P/N 6700S0011. Hope this helps someone, since this stove is over fifty years old, dating from about 1966. It is dark brown in colour. Cheers!

On 2020-01-11 - by (mod) - identify my Moffat Stove located in Tasmania?

I did an image search + the word Moffat and found a nearly identical stove indicating it's a 1930's model. That stove had been sold but you might get some info from the seller

Above is vgaragesale's photo of their 1930's moffat, published here in case their page disappears

Hi, can someone identify my Moffat Stove from this picture.
It's in Tasmania , Australia and the manufacturer's tag says.."Made in Canada
MOFFATS LIMITED
HED 507
Style E-37K
Serial 117746
240 V / 31 A"
it has 3 plates/elements , 2 are about 8inches?, other a little smaller.
Thanks, I've added a picture of the stove.
Grateful any info, including what value it may have.

usually there's a metal tag. It may be riveted to one of the sides of a door opening or drawer opening and occasionally maybe on the back of the appliance

Hi, I'm trying to find where the model number would be on a 1950's moffat roper super delux gas stove. I've looked on the doors inside the oven...any ideas? Really just trying to find if a manual exists for this model. Thanks.

On 2019-07-15 by (mod) - data tag for an older Moffat electric stove, probably built before 1920
Thank you Collin, I'll keep the tag image with your other photos of your stove at MOFFAT STOVE HISTORY & REPAIR; also displaying it may prompt comments from other readers who are familiar with older Moffat stoves.
If I were to guess I'd speculate that this was the 68th electric stove Moffat manufactured, perhaps in February 1911.

Thanks here is the tag

How do you get the range top to snap back in place after lifting it to clean
Ben
Take a look under the front and sides of the stove top to see the location of the spring clips that hold a typical stovetop in place.
See how the clips in the stop top align with the holes in the stove base (or vice versa) and fix any mis-alignment:
You may need to use a thin blade such as a putty knife to push the face of one or more clips to slip exactly into their respective matching openings.
Attach photos of your stovetop and clips and clip openings and I can comment further.

I'm not sure about the decoding of the S/N of your Moffat range;
Yes it's most likely your stove was made in Canada as that was Moffat's address and facility.
regarding safe use, there are several things your electrician can check and if necessary repair or replace including
- actual electrical wires and connections
- controls (replacement parts are sometimes available as cited in the article above)
- temperature sensors (ditto)
I'd be glad to see a photo of your E37A and of its data tags
On 2019-03-03 by Beau Montgomery - vintage E37A Moffat range
Hi there. I have purchased a beautiful vintage E37A Moffat range ( as above) .
I am trying to find what year it was manufactured. Serial number is hard to decifer but it is either 21445 or 2/445. Would this have been imported from Canada? And if checked by an electrician will it still be safe to use?
I have been reading alot of old stoves were lined with asbestos. Is this a problem? Would be very grateful for your advice. Your sincerely , Beau Montgomery

I'm unsure how repairable a Moffat oven thermostat actually is - you might find a replacement part among some of the sources listed in this article - or perhaps a reader with experience in Moffat thermostat repair can add a suggestion.
Or you may find a universal thermostat replacement for the Moffat oven that will work - that's a common approach using oven thermostats widely sold at appliance repair parts vendors, as well as online such as Amazon, eBay.
I'd like to see a photo or two of the thermostat showing as much of its operation and of its components as you can as perhaps I'll have a suggestion.
In the UK WhiteGoods has some Moffat oven thermostat replacements - some of their offerings are "unviersal oven thermostats" that might be made to work, such as one I illustrate below (from their collection)

On 2019-01-15 by Reg - mid fifties Moffat electric stove with oven thermostat problems.
Hi; I have a mid fifties Moffat electric stove with oven thermostat problems. It is a bimetal, flat coil with a slide temperature selector. It will not hold to temperature and sometimes the slide moves on its own. Could it be that the thermostat is ok and there is a linkage problem ?
New parts are not available. Does anyone have experience with this. Thanks
On 2019-01-02 by (mod) - how To disconnect ANY hard-wired electric stove
Robert
To disconnect ANY hard-wired electric stove you need to
1. go to the main electrical panel and find the fuses or breakers powering the stove circuit. Typically there will be at least one and probably only one circuit, providing 220VAC to the appliance.
2 Turn off the breakers or pull the cartridge fuses if those are used to power the stove.
3. Use a DMM, VOM, or voltage tester at the stove wiring junction box to confirm that power is OFF - by testing both between leads and between each lead and ground.
This will mean pulling the stove forward enough to see and access its electrical wire connections in a junction box - typically in the wall behind the stove. There has to be enough slack wire to give this access - otherwise I'm not sure how anyone could have connected the stove in the first place.
Normally the circuit bringing power to the stove will end in a junction box in the wall behind the stove, and wires from the stove itself connect between stove and the wires in the junction box. (Nicer installations used a 240VAC plug connector).
You should not have to open or disassemble the stove itself, though I suppose there may be some electric stove, range, or oven models where that's necessary.
Watch out: making a mistake can kill you or burn down the house. So if you are not trained and comfortable doing such tests then don't try it - hire a licensed electrician to drop power for you.
4. With power OFF to the stove and confirmed OFF,
then you can disconnect the stove wires from the circuit wires.

In the text of the article MOFFAT STOVE HISTORY & REPAIR we name a few suppliers who have sometimes spare parts in stock for Moffat stoves.

On 2018-07-05 by (mod) - Moffat model 30 k 260
Rose,
I'll keep your request here and perhaps someone who has a Moffat manual will post or email-to me a PDF copy. I've been looking for Moffat manuals to provide free to our readers for some time now with little success.
Occasionally I find a web page or dealer offering a copy of a Moffat manual at a stunningly high price that, combined with doubt about what will be received, has left me hesitant.
There are also online Moffat parts vendors who sometimes have parts.
I have also on occasion shopped on eBay and purchased entire appliances or sub-assemblies to get a hold of a much-needed part. That's not the most economical approach but can be all that remains of options.
Attach some photos of your Moffat to a comment or two - that may help. Use the Add Image button.
