Find a Replacement Toilet Tank Lid

Generally, replacing a toilet tank lid or top can be a bit of a challenge; what I've done is to keep an eye out for people tossing out an old toilet with lid, or alternatively, with a general outline of the tank top shape and measurements I look for a third party source.

The toilet tank lid doesn't need to match exactly; it can be a bit larger, as long as its depth doesn't so intrude towards the front of the toilet as to block keeping the lid or seat raised.

1. Identify the toilet brand and model if you can. Help in recognizing or identifying a toilet brand is
   
   at TOILET TYPES, CONTROLS, PARTS and
   
   at TOILET MANUFACTURERS & SOURCES
2. Note the general shape of the top of the toilet tank or cistern so that you can describe that to the toilet tank top vendor - take a photo if you can, to provide to the toilet tank top supplier
   
   - Rectangular
   
   - Rectangular with increased dimension at corners
   
   - Curved Front, straight back
   
   - Other
3. Measure the cistern (tank) top dimensions as we illustrate in photos shown here and as we outline in detail below.
   
   You can use a tank or cistern top that is a bit larger but, of course not one that's smaller in any dimension.
   
   Watch out: if you make the tank/cistern top too deep (in the front-to-back dimension) you may find that the toilet seat or lid won't stay in the raised position.
4. Contact a vendor of "replacement toilet tank tops" or "replacement toilet cistern tops" where you'll see that many of these company's sell both model-specific toilet tank tops and also generic tops that will fit most toilet shapes.

Replacement Cistern (Toilet Tank) Lid Measurements

Example #1: Replacement Toilet Top Measurements: Toilet Cistern is Roughly Rectangular

Along with a photo and rough sketch of the shape of the top of your toilet tank or cistern, make these measurements before calling a replacement tank / cistern top vendor:

1. Back width of the tank or cistern
2. Depth of the tank front to back, at the center of its width
3. Front width of the tank
4. Depth of the tank measured at its side(s)

Example #2: Replacement Toilet Top Measurements: Toilet Tank Curves Out at Center-front

1. Back width of the tank or cistern - note that the back of this toilet tank is straight
2. Depth of the tank front to back, at the center of its width
3. Front width of the tank - note that the front of this toilet tank is curved with the apex of the curve "out" or towards the front of the toilet. (Other toilet tanks may curve inwards.)
4. Depth of the tank measured at its side(s)
5. Example depth of the tank measured front to back at distance (6) from the ends of the tank. You may make two or even three of these to give an accurate description to the replacement toilet top supplier.
6. Distance from end or side of toilet tank or cistern to the curve depth measurement.

Example 3: Toilet Tank Curves In at Center Front

1. Back width of the tank or cistern
2. Depth of the tank front to back, at the center of its width -
   
   Notice that this toilet tank curves "IN" at the center of its front wall.
3. Front width of the tank
4. Depth of the tank measured at its side(s)
   
   Notice that the tank width is greater at its sides that at its center.

You may notice that this toilet tank back is also slightly curved outwards. As long as the depth of the replacement lid is equal to dimension 4 and its width equal to the larger of dimension 1 or 3, the lid will "fit".

But note also that if the lid sticks out too far at the front of the cistern the toilet seat may refuse to rest in the lifted position. If you make a mistake in replacing the cistern lid and buy one a little too deep in dimension 4, and the toilet seat / lid won't stay up, instead of exchanging the top, you might find a replacement seat whose hinges provide a friction adjustment so as to hold the lid up.

If your Welling toilet is like the one shown above, the tank is rather rectangular in cross-section so it may be easy to find a replacement toilet tank or cistern top that fits using a more-generic source like those we list.

Please

- post a photo at the bottom of this page using the add-image button, showing me the logo on your Welling toilet base, broken lid, and

using additional comments (one photo per comment) post photos of any other identifying stamps on the toilet or inside the toilet tank or lid.

That may help us offer other suggestions.

Incidentally, let's be sure you mean a "Welling" brand toilet. Kohler produced a (now discontinued) Wellington™ toilet - shown below.

Sure, sorry I realise now it was lacking basic info.

Location: UK, North London.

The item in question is a toilet, the image in inside the tank lid. It has that "S" shape then the number "650".

I moved into my home in November 2020. its a 1980's build house. I do not believe the toilet in from that era as the rest of the bathroom is modern and it is an enclosed toilet.

the lid in question has a crack in it and i would like to replace it.

AIO Toilets is an acronym for All In One, a toilet sold by Glacier Bay and at home depot stores and at some other building suppliers.

The Marathon II 6200 toilet is sold in Home Depot stores and at Walmart. Your local store may be able to order a replacement toilet tank lid for you.

There are also generic toilet tank tops that may fit - make a trace or make measurements of the top of your toilet tank; a slightly larger tank lid is OK.
