Old Arco Gas Boiler, no heat for seven days

I have had no heat for seven days. I have an old Arco gas burning Boiler No. 11, American Radiator Company, W 0811G 1 BJ with a Bell & Gossett booster water pump. I called the company and went to their distributor with the old pump which I had removed and bought and installed their new recommended pump according to their instructions.

I also had an old White Rogers Thermostat, and bought and replaced it with an new Honeywell Thermostat, as per the company's telephone tech instructions. When I first replaced the new booster water pump and restarted the system, the Arco Gas Burning fired up, but only ran for five to ten minutes and then shut down again

. I next opened the water fill valves on all my homes radiators and bleed the air from each one, until water came out. Next, I turned up the new thermostat to 90 degrees and waited for something to happen. Nothing happened. The boiled did not fire-up and the radiators remained cold.

I can not afford to have a professional come in to trouble shot and repair this heating system. CAN ANY KIND SOUL, ON THIS CHRISTMAS DAY ADVISE AND OLD MAN WHAT TO DO NEXT TO GET HEAT BACK INTO MY HOME. THANKING YOU IN ADVANCE. (Dec 25, 2016) Peter Chechopoulos

Peter,

I'm as confused as you. It's understandable, and sometimes it works to just try swapping some parts, but sometimes we discover, as you seem to have found, that the parts being replaced are not finding nor fixing the trouble. I suspect the problem is in the burner itself - needing cleaning and perhaps a new nozzle, fuel screen, fuel filter.

Larry adds that:

The Bethlehem Foundry & Machine Co. was a significant industrial firm in South Bethlehem, PA, evolving from Ernst L. Lehman's 1832 brass foundry into a diverse manufacturer of iron/brass fittings, steam/water/gas components, and even home heating boilers like the "Bethlehem Dynatherm," known for its Scottish marine boiler design. While distinct from the larger Bethlehem Steel, it played a vital role in local industry, adapting to new technologies but eventually fading as large-scale steel production ceased in the region.  - Lawrence Transue

Blueray Heating Boilers & Furnaces - safety recall

Watch out: See this important  BLUERAY RECALL NOTICE about older Blueray furnaces and boilers.

Later models of the Blueray heating boiler (Blueray furnaces were also manufactured) attempted to correct these safety concerns but the company did not survive its image as dangerous.

The Thermodynamics Boiler Company purchased the remains of the defunct "Blueray Systems", redesigned the heating equipment, and marketed it under several names which included the "Blueray" appellation.

Those service people "in the know" realized that the Thermodynamics version of Blueray was a different animal and did not have the same safety concerns as the original.

Reply by (mod) -

I agree that the age of your heater is likely to be the same or slightly older than your home, as it would have been produced in or before the year your home was built.

Your boiler serial number BN352020 may decode as AAY12345 which tells us that the first numeric digit may be the last digit of the year of manufacture - with the decade not given. So I'd guess your heater was manufactured in 1963.

Leaky Crane cast iron baseboard eater help needed

I have a house that was built in 1950, it has a Crane cast iron gas baseboard heater. It has been leaking, I think a pipe bursted in it last winter, I cannot find the manufacturer. My question is how do you take off the cover, are there screws or do you have to pry it off the wall? On 2014-09-22 by Kimberly or Reed Wendel

by (mod) - Crane cast iron gas baseboard heater

Kimberly

I don't know the specific cast iron baseboard heater you mention but it would be odd to have to physically pry one from a wall; r

ather it most likely must be disconnected at either end of its piping and then screws or bolts are found that secure the unit in place.

They may be painted over or behind a removable cover.

CWF DuoMatic Coal/Wood Furnace

See our complete list at OLSEN AIRCO HVAC MANUALS & PARTS GUIDES Olsen / Air Co Boilers, Canadian DMO Industries using Olsen & Airco brands.

I Need a rating plate for a CWF Duo-Matic Forced Air Coal & Wood Furnace

I have a CWF duo matic forced air coal and wood furnace. I have a serial number but I need a rating plate number for insurance purposes and the numbers are no longer legable. How can I get this? - Jen 10/29/11

Reply:

Jen,

Yours is probably an Olsen Coal/Wood - Oil forced warm air system. The CWF is more likely a model number.

But I think if your equipment is old, you may be out of luck finding anyone at the present company who knows a thing about it. Just look at the brand name history given below.

You might get some help from wood heat suppliers who I found still sell spare parts for Olsen coal/wood furnaces, such as at woodmanspartsplus.com though the parts I saw looked a bit generic. You will find help with estimating BTU output of wood fired heaters and furnaces at a variety of wood heat organizations.

It's no surprise that tracking down the current company selling or servicing older HVAC equipment is difficult. Look at this example: Olsen's product line originated in the 1940's. Olsen's combination heater line was purchased by DMO Industries (previously known as Duomatic-Olsen, then as Olsen Technology).

DMO Industries manufactured two brands of furnaces, Olsen and Airco. Those were sold in 2001 to ECR International (formed in 1999) who now owns Olsen, Airco as well as the Oneida Royal furnace brands, Utica and Dunkirk boilers as well as Enviromaster International central air conditioners.

You wont' find information about any combination fuel heaters in their current product line, though for Olsen products more information may be available from Olsen/Airco at Olsen/Airco Heating & Cooling Products - USA P.O. Box 4729 2201 Dwyer Ave., Utica, NY 13504, Website: www.olsenhvac.com/ Their customer service number is 866-847-6656.
