EFM Company History
EFM (Electric Furnace Man) is one of the oldest names in heating in the United States. The company logo includes the phrase, “The finest in automatic heat”, which refers to the origins of the company as a manufacturer of coal stoker boilers.
Coal fired heating around the turn of the century was still a dirty and time consuming proposition. A coal stoker invented at e·f·m made it possible to feed coal automatically to the fire and even to change the feed rate in response to a thermostat. This innovation was a great time saver and improved the comfort of millions of Americans. ... The EFM stoker boiler is still made today.

EFM WOOD/COAL BOILER INSTALLATION & OPERATION MANUAL [PDF] Model WCB,
Excerpts:
DANGER: This boiler is equipped with a fuse-able
plug. It is located inside the boiler. It is not
adjustable. In the event that boiler water
temperature exceeds approximately 276° F, a
dangerous condition, the plug will open and boiler
water will fall into the firebox.
Follow all operating
instructions carefully to avoid a dangerous condition
that would result in activation of the fuse-able plug.
The WCB Hand Fired Boiler is designed for both
wood and coal firing. It is provided with a cast iron
shaker grate and a firebrick combustion chamber
lining with an overhead baffle which provides a
double pass for the flue gases for better heat
extraction from the fuel being burned.
This boiler is
primarily intended to be an “Add-On” unit to an
existing oil or gas fired forced hot water boiler.
This
boiler is not intended to be the sole source of heat
except for the storage buildings, cabins, etc. where
constant steady heat is not required.
See instructions
under heading “To Set Up Boiler” for proper
application. This boiler is not to be used with an
automatic stoker.
