At the end of this page we give an index to banging or booming noise sources for heating, ventilating, or cooling systems.
Blower fans and air handler components can induce vibration into buillding ductwork, walls, floors, ceilings that may sound like a bang when equipment turns on or off.
Sheet metal ductwork or cabinets around heating equipment may make a bang or clank sound in response to thermal movement as the metal heats or cools, or in response to the pressurization and de-pressurization as blower fans start and stop.
Loose ductwork or air handler doors or panels or simply under-sized air ducts can also bang or clank as fans turn on or off.

my oil fired Camray boiler keeps making banging noises. what is the cause of this. This boiler is an outside wall mounted boiler
Anon,
Watch out: "Banging" noises inside an oil burner / boiler might be a sign of improper burner operation and risk a dangerous Puffback.
Because puffbacks can be caused by a variety of problems (oil piping line leaks, dirty oil burner nozzle assembly, fuel or combustion air problems, simply failure to maintain the system) a trained service technician is needed.

Backfire every time oil furnace shuts off after heating . Not running the furnace fan on continuous just on auto . No odour no spit etc but the backfire after furnace shuts off is that dangerous ?
Yes.
With just a smidgen of information I can only guess that your oil burner is not shutting down correctly and is dribbling some in completely burned fuel into the combustion chamber the end of a heating cycle. That's risking a dangerous puffback explosion.
There could be several causes such as a leak in the oil lines, air in the system, or a fuel shut off valve that doesn't close properly in the oil pump.
You need help from a oil heat service technician.
