Trane corporation, first incorporated in 1913, provides HVAC equipment including air conditioners, heat pumps, ventilating systems, including PTAC units and air handlers that can move heated or cooled air through a building's air duct system.
A PTAC like the unit shown here is a "packaged terminal air conditioner" or "ductless" self-contained air conditioning or heating unit that is typicaly wall-mounted.
In 1982 Trane purchased the General Electric Climate Control Division, and Trane itself was purchased by American Standard two years later in 1984, then purchased by Ingersoll Rand in 2008 where the company continues as a subsidiary..
Trane's current home page (April 2021) provides owners manuals for the company's product line and makes the companys installation and service manuals and technical product literature beyond product brochures available to the company's dealers. Below we include some PDF downloads for various Trane HVAC equipment.

Trane HVAC equipment like the indoor air handler or outdoor compressor-condenser unit is identified by a product data tag or sticker that contains information about the unit. The data tag will include two key identification fields: the product designation or identification code and the product's individual serial number.
The product serial number is a unique character string including numbers that can be decoded to give the product's age and manufacturing details.
The product designation or model identification code is a character tring that provides information about the product type, features and capacity.
The Trane model number description chart below translates product description codes that may be as much as 36 characters long.

@Ray,
You're asking about the temperature limit control for the air handler for backup heat for a Trane heat pump system.
Typically those units employ a snap-disc type limit control whose sensor is mounted on the air handler in the supply plenum; you'll find it by following wires from the burner control up to the plenum and look for device like those I'll show starting with the SWT01261 American Standard Trane Furnace Limit Switch attached to this note.
Continuing: the limit switch above is not adjustable; it has these properties:
THERMAL LIMIT, OPEN @ 260 F, CLOSE @ 230 DEG F.
Below we show a side view of the same control - this comprises the probe and snap-disc sensor that is inserted into the plenum - you won't see the probe and sensor until the control is removed.
Replacements are sold by HVAC suppliers like arnoldservice.com/
Watch out: be sure to check the part number or your installation manual before ordering a limit control for your specific Trane unit as yours may have a different limit control installed. The key differences are the proper range of operating temperatures.
Your HVACR supplier fan help you be sure you're ordering the right limit control switch for your Trane system when you provide the model number of your unit.
For example the Trane furnace thermal limit control shown below open sat 190, and closes at 160 degF. This is the Trane SWT01612
Thermal Limit, Open at 190, Close at 160, For Use With Mfr. Model Number ADC120C960B5, ADC120C960B6, ADC120C960B7, ADC120C960B8, ADC120C960BA, ADC1D120A9601AA, ADC1D120A9601AB, ADC1D120A9601AC, ADC1D120A9601AD, ADH2D120A960VAA, ADH2D120A9V5VAA, ADH2D120A9V5VAB, ADH2D120A9V5VAC, ADH2D120A9V5VAD, ADH2D120A9V5VBA, Fits Brand Trane
Also widely sold, e.g. at zoro.com/
My own search for
""Furnace limit control switch for Trane Model TWV018B140A1"
turns up more than one switch so I'm not confident that the sales websites will exactly match your unit without further questioning
The Trane Furnace Limit Switch SWT01261 is specifically listed as for the TWV018B140A1 (your unit) according to this online parts vendor: repairclinic.com
and is shown at the start these notes.
Other common Trane limit controls - for other readers - include

Savannah,
I suspect we're seeing insulation that protects the plastic vent line (probably for a draft inducer or vent) from heat generated in the heat exchanger.
You can find the installation manual for your Trane XV90 on this page, at TRANE AIR CONDITIONERS & HEAT PUMPS inspectapedia.com/heat/HVAC-Manuals-Air-Conditioners-Boiler-Furnaces-T-Z.php#Trane along with contact information for the company.
I include your photo to invite comments and I've sent an inquiry to the company as well.

It’s a 1989 Trane XV90 - no manual unfortunately
On 2017-12-06 - by (mod) -
well it certainly looks like an insulating material but I don't know Details of your equipment. Do you have the manual that has a parts explosion? If so we could identify exactly what's being insulated. If not I'll see if I can find the manual myself. So let me know.
