Crown Boiler Age Decoder: Data Tags

Shown here: data tag for a Crown Gas Boiler, Model No. AW106SNST1PSU Serial No. CROWNB000369658, Crown Boiler Co.

Some crown boilers give the date explicitly on the data tag itself. [Click to enlarge any image]

Shown here at upper left you will see the date: 3/1/2005 - for this boiler.

Other Crown boiler data tags will show, in the same label location titled "SERIES" a two-characgter alphanumeric code such as AC wgich is decoded as YM

Decoded as follows:

Y or Year - codes A - 2004, B-2005, C-2006, D-2007, E-2008, F-2009, G-2010, H-2011, I-2012, J-2013, K-2014, L-2015, M-2016, N-2017, O-2018

M or Month -codes: A - Jan, B-Feb, C-Mar, D-Apr, E-May, F-Jun, G-Jul, H-Aug, I-Sep, J-Oct, K-Nov, L- Dec

Other Crown heaters, specifically newer Crown Boiler Co, indirect water heaters encode the age of that tank within the serial number as follows:

YY123456 or YY1234567- example 05383834 or 05383845 both would decode as 2005

Brandon: hot water boilers (hydronic heat) in a residential buiding typically run from about 12 psi cold to under 30 psi hot. Steam boilers run at about 0.5 psi.

Newer Crown Boiler Co, indirect water heaters encode the age of that tank within the serial number as follows:

YY123456 or YY1234567-

using your example: SN 781001779 might be as old as 1978 - it would be helpful, given that Crown uses a range of boiler age encoding in serial numbers, to have a hint from you such as

- the location of the boiler: country and city

- the age of the home where the boiler is installed

Sorry for the delay in accepting the images - sometimes the reader comment/posting volume gets us a bit behind.

I suspect a bad solder joint or board just as do you.

Though it's worth noting that for an electronic ignition gas pilot/flame we could have a bad sensor/thermocouple or for electronic ignition, a bad wire, connection, or igniter.

At our page giving access to Crown boiler manuals

CROWN BOILER AGE PARTS MANUALS

you can find the manual for your AWI boiler

inspectapedia.com/heat/Crown-AW-BW-CW-16-34-Gas-Boiler-User-Manual-Standing-Pilot.pdf

In your boiler model number AWI is the series, 061 is the MBH (input BTUs), and the S suffix tells us it's meant to have a standing polot.

You'd want to check the thermocouple before replacing the Honeywell Aquastat Controller L8148E used on your boiler.

On 2018-07-24 by Paul D. Gas fired Crown boiler Aquastat jumper wire problem

Jumper wire on aquastat control (C) InspectApedia.com PaulI have a gas fired Crown boiler that I decided to test prior to the upcoming Michigan Upper Peninsula winters...lol.

Had to relight pilot. When I turned up the thermostat, it wouldn’t light.

Checked everything I could, and found that the b1 & b2 were reading zero.

I decided to check the jump connection just above that which was giving me problems last year. After wiggling it a bit, it fired. Now then, I’m including a few pics to help with my descriptions...hope they help.

The jump wire that I tested last year for a good connection looks like the 2nd pic (1st is the Aquastat).

If you notice where the green jump wire used to be, I replaced it with a more solid jump wire minus the female part of the connector.

It is this new jumper that I wiggled again this year and it fired, thus giving b1&b2 a 24v reading.

Furnace is again functioning as should (temp gauge at circa 180, pressure at circa 15lbs, very minimal spits of yellow flame above burners), but I want to get to the bottom of this bad jumper connection.

For the record, I did use dialectric silicone compound on connection.

Anyway, the transformer does have a constant humming noise, not real loud, but nonetheless there.

And, probably not important to the matter at hand, but the circulator runs constantly...a very low hum can be heard by it as well as the Safegard Low Water Cut-off.

Also, as should be noted, this system bypasses the damper (it's there, but not wired)...I’m assuming because it vents into the existing chimney just below the hot water heater vent.

Suffice it to say that this is an older system, 1994, but I cannot be sure if the Aquastat is that old, though it appears to be. Any advice and/or instructions will be most welcomed! Thanks in advance!

Question: Crown boiler air purger not needed?

(Feb 2, 2012) Peter Kurtenbach said:

I have just had a new CROWN TWZ065 boiler instaled.
The installer said my air purger was no longed needed & removed it.
I now have noise in my base board. They have tried to purge it 4 times.
I belive it is because the air purger was removed. was he right?

Reply:

Removing an air purge is ok IF there is another adequate air purge in the system such that you're not leaving an air trap

Question: Crown Boiler PR valve leaked, drained expansion tank, system went right back up to 30 psi

(Dec 1, 2014) Samuel said:
I just had someone come take a look at my Crown water boiler because it's leaking from the PR valve, he said my expansion tank was waterlogged so he let some water out of the tank , which reduced the pressure, then turned the heater on for about ten minutes, the pressure went up to 30 psi and then water came out of the PR valve again,

he said I need to replace the expansion tank, is that true? If so is there a certain brand I have to use or can I use any tank with the correct psi I need for my home?x

Reply:

Samuel

The TP valve is indeed supposed to open at about 30 psi - so your system is at excessive pressure. It is possible that the expansion tank is waterlogged and can only be fixed by replacement IF

- the tank is one that uses an internal bladder and the bladder has burst
- the tank does not use an internal bladder but is damaged, say perforated - which you'd probably see as a leak on the tank itself.

There are other possible causes for excessive heating system pressure including a damaged or mis-set water feeder pressure reducer. If the boiler water pressure is excessive (say over 12 psi) when the system is COLD then there may be a feed problem.

Just how much pressure is too much in a cold boiler? It depends on building height. Your home may need a bit more than 12 psi cold.

(Dec 1, 2014) Samuel said:

Is there any way to check if the bladder has burst or not, there is no perforations /no leaks on tank, and what does a water feeder pressure reducer look like and how can I check to see if its damaged or mis-set, my house is an upstairs, downstairs, and basement. THANK YOU FOR GETTING BBACK TO ME SO FAST!

What kind of tank is it, Samuel? Brand, model, size. Use our CONTACT US link to see an email for sending photos and I will comment further.

Question: Crown gas boiler gas valve not working

(Oct 8, 2015) Jim said:
I have an old crown gas boiler. It goes on and when thermostat is set to make it run, the circulator pump goes on but there is no voltage to the gas valve to open it. I figure it must be either something in the circuit board, or the water heat sensor at back of control board is faulty. what is more likely?

On 2018-03-24 by (mod) - when to check the sight glass water level on a Crown steam boiler

Richard:

When the boiler has been off for a time after you added water, check the sight glass again. If water level has risen above the point to which you added water, then we think there is a blockage and a delay in return of condensate to the boiler.

If that's not happening I'd look for a problem with steam vents that are not closing when the rads are hot, or for a leak in the condensate return line.
