Carrier Air Conditioner or Heat Pump Age Decoder

Carrier HVAC equipment, like the indoor air handler or outdoor compressor-condenser unit, is identified by a product data tag or sticker that contains information about the unit. The data tag will include two key identification fields: the product designation or identification code and the product's individual serial number.

Carrier Product Serial Number & equipment age

The Carrier product serial number, a unique character string including numbers that can be decoded to give the product's age and manufacturing details.

• Carrier 1980-present: week and year are encoded in the first four digits of the serial number as WWYY1234567
• Carrier equipment produced in the 1970's MY12345678 encoded the month and year as a letter (month) and single digit (year) where A=January -> M = December. e.g. A9xxxxxx = January 1979
  
• Carrier equipment produced in the 1960's Y123456789 encoded just the year of manufacture as a single digit (year) in the first position of the serial number, e.g. 9xxxxxx = 1969.

Carrier Product Designation

The Carrier product designation or model identification code, a character string that provides information about the product type, features and capacity.

  WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is announcing a recall of about 30,000 furnaces sold in California. Seven firms are offering to repair or replace certain furnaces, which were sold under their own labels, but were manufactured by Consolidated Industries Inc.
  
  The units involved are gas-fired horizontal furnaces equipped with steel "NOx" rods installed above the burners and are commonly called NOx rod furnaces. These furnaces pose a substantial risk of fire.
  
  All the furnaces can be identified by the steel rods installed above the burners. The firms participating in this recall are Amana Company, L.P., of Amana, Iowa; Bard Manufacturing, of Bryan, Ohio; Carrier Corporation, of Syracuse, N.Y.; Goettl Air Conditioning Inc., of Phoenix, Ariz.; Goodman Manufacturing Company L.P., of Houston, Texas; Heat Controller Inc., of Jackson, Mich.; and The Trane Company, a division of American Standard Inc., of Tyler, Texas.

Tom if you can't access and simply measure your furnace directly, then you simply need to identify the brand and model of your furnace and then look in the installation manual for that particular heater period from just your text IM sorry but I can't know the dimensions of an arbitrary system

Are you able to find the manual for your system. That will show the standard filter location at the air handler. If you don't have it we can help you find and download a PDF copy.

Watch out: If your Carrier Air Handler / Furnace is igniting (presumably this is a gas fueled furnace and air conditioning unit) as if there's a call for heat when you're in COOL mode (check your thermostat) then the unit's controls are not working properly and the unit is unsafe.

Call your heating service tech for repair.
