Magic-Pak Serial Number & Age Decoder Guide

How do I Find the Age of my Magic Pack HVAC?

Our InspectApedia reader asked:

How old my magic pack HVAC? I have no idea, but I have the model number and serial number. - Charlie 10/9/11

Reply:

In the references section below we include links to some serial number decoding guide books that may be able to help you pinpoint the age of your Magic Pack HVAC system - the year is coded in the serial number.

Look for the MagicPak serial number on the data tag or sticker on the front panel of your unit or on its top or side.

If you don't see a data tag on the outside of your unit, look inside the access covers.

Then find the serial number, where on most units the year of manufacture is in the second two digits, such as we show the following example:

MagicPak Serial # 8810B12345 where the serial number is #NNYYA12345 where YY is the year of manufacture.

So in our example, that Magic-Pak unit was manufactured in the 2010.

We've found four Magic-Pak Serial Number Formats whose details we give just below.

  1. nnYYMnnnn where YY is the year of manufacture and M is the Month and where the alphabetic Month code is decoded as follows

Month Code

Month
A January
B February
C March
D April
E May
F June
G July
G August
J September
K October
L November
M December

Notes to the table above

To avoid confusion Magic-Pak does not use the letter "I" in month coding.

  1. AnnnnnMYA where A = an alphabetic character, Y is an alphabetic OR numeric year date code given in the table below, and M is an alphabetic month code as given in our month table above. The lower case n designates other numerical portions of the serial number.

Year Code for Magic-Pak Serial Number Format 2

Year
8 1978
9 1979
A 1980
B 1981
C 1982
D 1983
E 1984
F 1985
G 1986
G 1987
J 1988
K 1989
L 1990
M 1991
N 1992

Notes to the table above

  1. DDMYY AAnnn where DD = day and M month of manufacture (see the Month Table above on this page) and a two-digit year is encoded backwards, for example if YY reads as = 67 the actual year of manufacture is 1976. The last three digits of this serial number is unique to the equipment on the day it was produced.
  2. nnnnnnYYWW where YY is the year of manufacture and WW is the week of manufacture in of course a 52-week year.
