Vinyl-asbestos floor tile photos for 1970-1972 & surrounding years.

This article series provides a guide to identifying asphalt-asbestos flooring (1917 - ca 1960) & vinyl asbestos floor tile (ca 1952 - 1986), giving a full catalog of floor tile and sheet flooring identification photographs, product names, styles, colors, and vinyl-asbestos floor patterns, and colors for asbestos-containing floor tile products made between about 1930 and 1986 - flooring materials that are reported to or have been confirmed to contain asbestos in asbestos fiber or asbestos powder-filler form.
These flooring products typically contain chrysotile asbestos, and possibly other asbestos forms. Some of the tile adhesive mastics used also contained asbestos.

Asphalt asbestos and vinyl-asbestos floor tiles were produced in 9" x 9", 12" x 12", and even 18" x 18" as well as in decorative strips, and in thicknesses of 1/16", 3/32", and 1/8", also in 0.08 gauge.
Some sheet flooring or resilient flooring also contained asbestos, as did floor tile mastics.
This photo guide to asphalt asbestos & vinyl asbestos floor tiles for each year shows at least one color photo of each floor tile style or pattern in an example color.
A list below each group of photos includes the names of and links to additional photos for other colors of these styles.
Asbestos is safe and legal to remain in homes or public buildings as long as the asbestos materials are in good condition and the asbestos can not be released into the air.
To identify a particular asphalt-asbestos or vinyl-asbestos floor tile pattern & color, start in the image group most likely to be the same age as your building.

Many of the colors and patterns of asphalt-asbestos or vinyl-asbestos floor tiles were manufactured over many years and may appear in more than one of the floor tile photo collections listed by date range here.
For each year we list the names of the tile patterns sold during that year, we include representative color images of the floor tiles, and throughout the entire floor tile pattern & color history series we include each floor tile color & pattern of the floor tile in the first year that it appeared , and we include representative colors and patterns in other years.

Below: Armstrong's Perimafloor system described in a 1970 magazine advertisement (top) and Armstrong Corlon sheet flooring (bottom).
As a faster way to install a new layer of flooring the company recommended sanding a 6" to 8" strip around the perimeter of the existing floor as well as in the location where any seams will occur in the new sheet flooring installation.
Then a 4-inch band of Armstrong S-200 or S-205 adhesive woud be applied to secure a new layer of Amstrong Corlon sheet flooring such as showin in the bottom photo in this ad.
Watch out: those Armstrong instructions would have the installer sanding what may be asbestos-containing floor tiles - today this would be an improper and unsafe procedure.

Identify this flooring in our 1958 house
I couldn’t find this pattern in the images. The house was built in 1958. I don’t know when the flooring was installed. - On 2023-03-23 by Justin
Reply by InspectApedia Editor - marble chip and brown medallion patterns- newer than 1958
@Justin,
We see two flooring patterns in your photo:
The smaller, upper right, pattern looks like a very common marble chip pattern that very possibly contains asbestos.
See more at
MARBLE CHIP PATTERN FLOORING ASBESTOS
The larger pattern may also contain asbestos and should be handled as such.

Shattrered stone-like 12-inch floor tile in a 1950's home

Thanks for the question and photo; we've seen similar shattered stone floor tile patterns but I don't recall that exact one.I think that's a late 1960s or later floor tile pattern. Possibly not Armstrong but Kentile or another brand.
Identify these tiles before I have a lab test for asbestos?
Hello, I am doing a home renovation, and before going through with a lab test/calling professional I wanted to see if anyone would be able to help me identify these two tile models which I found while doing my kitchen renovation.

@Eric,
Indeed you will find that floor pattern, of which we have only a tiny peek in your photo probably one of those shown in this article series and should be treated as presumed to contain asbestos unless you have a sample tested to show otherwise.
If you do decide to do that keep us posted.

Asbestos-containing floor tile mastic and tiles themselves
Hello, I am fairly sure the tiles pictured used asbestos adhesive
. The house was built in the mid-60s and this flooring has been in this room since my family bought the house in 1999. Some tiles have started to come up as you can see.
We could put down a new floor over all of this tile, but I'm wondering if we could find lookalike vinyl tiles of the same thickness to replace the tiles that have come up?
If so, I'd love to know where I might find and purchase them.

@Alan,
Thank you very much for the nice comment. We've worked hard on this website so we are very grateful when we use find it useful.
I have not seen your exact floor tile pattern for sale in among modern floor tiles, but you could try doing a Google image search to see how close a match you can find that way, and I think you'll find some that are similar.
or you can make it a contrasting area and choose any tile.
Start by measuring the thickness of the tile that's there a d of course it's rectangular dimensions.

@Roy A Ellis, Sr,
That flooring might contain asbestos if it was installed in a building in North America before 1987. From a photo one can’t answer your question with certainty. Have a sample of the flooring tested, or you can make a reasonable *guess* at whether or not the floor contains asbestos by answering the few easy questions found at:
