Tip: If after you cleaned your gas cooktop or range top or if after a spill onto or into the cooktop one or more gas burner igniters started misbehaving, sparking continuously, not sparking, or the burners won't light it's quite possible that the wiring or igniters got soaked.
Often simply drying out these components is a sufficient repair, as you'll read in more detail below.
I have a Maytag 5 burner cooktop. 2 of the igniters spark but don't ignite fire. The spark on these 2 spark downward when I have it on Lite and don't jump to metal to ignite a fire.
Spark goes down the side of ceramic igniter. The other 3 spark upward and ignite like it should.
What is causing the downward spark instead upward. It started doing this after I cleaned the burners. On 2022-01-30 by Binh -
Answer by Inspectapedia Com Moderator - caution when cleaning burners - probably your burner wires and parts are wet
@Binh,
Since this started after you cleaned the burners, it seems likely that it is a result of that cleaning.FIRST: give the cookto more time to dry, or you can try my hurry-up trick:
I wipe and dry any visible water on the cooktop.
I make sure the burer caps and other parts are all in place
I light each burner with a match or cigarette lighter
I let each burner run for four or five minutes to get plenty hot.
Often that will dry out local parts and the igniters will then work properly.
If that doesn't work I might wait overnight to let wires and connectors inside / under the cooktop dry out.
IF the problem is that you spilled water or other liquids and that the cooktop got quite wet there may actually be puddle to dry out inside the cooktop.
IF drying out doesn't work,
THEN In my OPINION when it doesn't seem to be a gas flow problem (since other burners work fine) AND if you're sure that the spark module is intact AND you're sure that the wires between module and igniter connector and all of the electrical connections are clean, dry, tight, sound,
THEN I figure there may be
- subtle damage to the igniter itself, such as a crack that's hard to see, causing a current leak
- electrical resistance that you are not seeing by the naked eye such as a bit of food or corrosion or oxidation on the igniter tip or on the spark-receiving surface
Keep in mind that something embarrassingly simple (as I've tripped over this) like a burner cap that is slightly askew or has water under it can prevent a good burner ignition spark.
