, very good condition in this case; careful nailing, perhaps extra nails, may be used when installing slate or any nailed-roofing material on a very steep or vertical surface such as this mansard slate roof.

Because steep sloped roofs of any design shed water quickly the roofs tend to be long-lived. I expect to find failed slate fasteners as the main reason slates are falling or failing on an older steep slate roof.
