Companies producing asbestos or large volumes of asbestos-containing products + Dates
How to file an asbestos injury claim with one of the Asbestos Trusts
Asbestos producing companies, complete list of companies and asbestos-products:
This article lists U.S. (and other) companies who were major producers of asbestos or asbestos-containing products. There were thousands of products that contained asbestos, some made by comparatively small businesses.
Where known we list the range of years over which each company produced or distributed asbestos-containing products or materials.
Therefore no list of asbestos product producers is likely to be complete. But these major asbestos-product producing companies were responsible for the production of the majority of products used over the range of asbestos-containing products and materials.
This article series assists building building buyers, owners, attorneys, engineers, environmental investigators or inspectors who need to identify asbestos materials (or probable-asbestos) in buildings by simple visual inspection. We provide photographs of asbestos containing materials and descriptive text of asbestos insulation and other asbestos-containing products to permit identification of definite, probable, or possible asbestos materials in buildings.
InspectAPedia tolerates no conflicts of interest. We have no relationship with advertisers, products, or services discussed at this website.
- Daniel Friedman, Publisher/Editor/Author - See WHO ARE WE?
The following is a complete list of companies who produced products that used or contained asbestos in one or more forms
. Of course many of these companies made many products that did not-contain asbestos as well.
This article is a companion
to ASBESTOS LIST of PRODUCTS - an extensive list of asbestos-containing products.
CONTACT us if you are aware of a asbestos-using product manufacturer who is not on this list; we welcome the addition of company names from other countries than the U.S. and Canada represented below.

Armstrong ceiling tiles: According to Armstrong Corporation, those attorneys and some home inspectors are mistaken. Armstrong commented as follows:
Our mineral fibre tiles are made from a combination of the following naturally occurring, processed and recycled materials in varying proportions depending upon the tile type: mineral wool, clay, perlite, cellulose and starch mixed together in a water based process before being cured by heat.
They are then finished with a water based paint, or laminated scrim and paint, decorative facing. All these materials are environmentally safe and our factories comply with ISO 14001.
Asbestos, in any form, is not and never has been used in the manufacture of Armstrong ceiling tiles.[8]
Armstrong floor tiles: asphalt asbestos and later vinyl-asbestos floor tiles contain asbestos depending on age.
Really? The phrases "asbestos tile" and "asbestos floor tiles" can be misleading. Asbestos was an important ingredient as both filler (ultra-fine asbestos particles) and as a reinforcing fiber (asbestos fibers) but such floor tiles used asphalt or later vinyl as the principal binder. There are no pure-asbestos floor tiles in buildings.

This memorandum was initially compiled in the
mid-1990’s for purposes of identifying locations in the United States where Capco asbestos
cement (“A/C”) pipe was utilized. It has been updated and the contents verified over the past
year or so at the request of the ASARCO Asbestos Trust.
Capco sold its A/C pipe to three types of customers: direct end-use customers (e.g.,
municipalities), pipeline contractors, and distributors.
It also shipped A/C pipe to storage yards
located in Arizona, Texas, and California.
The records that Capco retained do not offer a complete picture of Capco’s sales history.
The information compiled herein and in the two binders containing state-by state-sales charts has
been obtained through a review of Capco’s original customer cards, sales database, and sales
department files and through interviews with various Capco personnel, as outlined more fully
below.

Carey Canada, a wholly owned subsidiary of Celotex, was formerly engaged in the mining, milling and processing of asbestos fiber.
On October 12, 1990, Celotex Corporation and Carey Canada Incorporated filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. The Trust was created as a result of the bankruptcy. The Trust is organized to process, liquidate and pay all valid asbestos personal injury claims in accordance with the Claims Resolution Procedures (CRP) approved by the bankruptcy court.

The Trust also protects those who are not presently injured but may develop an asbestos-related disease in the future due to exposure.
During the bankruptcy proceeding a deadline was established for those individuals who were injured as a result of asbestos exposure. The deadline is referred to as the Bar Date, by which potential claimants must have filed a Proof of Claim. The Bar Date was March 15, 1996. Individuals who filed their Proofs of Claim on or before the Bar Date are eligible to file a claim with the Trust.
Any individuals diagnosed with an injury after the Bar Date are considered future injury claimants and may file claims with the Trust.
If you are unsure of your eligibility, you may still file a claim with the Trust. Your claim will be reviewed and we will determine your eligibility.

Where Asbestos Exposure May Have Occurred with Congoleum Products
Asbestos containing floor products manufactured by Congoleum were most commonly used in the construction industry for new construction and remodeling projects across both residential and commercial markets.
Working in construction can be physically demanding as well as hazardous because the need to work around toxic substances like asbestos occurs frequently.
Those who worked directly with asbestos containing products, such as installers, demolition workers and do-it-yourselfers have been unaware of exposure to harmful asbestos fibers and now could be at risk for developing mesothelioma, an asbestos-related disease.
Equally at risk were those who worked in other trades along side or within close proximity of the jobsite as well as spouses and other family members who were exposed to the worker's dusty clothing and hair.

The DII Industries, LLC Asbestos PI Trust (the “Trust”) is a Pennsylvania common law trust, and is a “Qualified Settlement Fund” within the meaning of Treasury Department regulations issued pursuant to Section 468B of the Internal Revenue Code. The Trust was created on January 20, 2005, in connection with confirmation of the Chapter 11 Joint Plan of Reorganization (the “Plan”) for DII Industries, LLC, formerly Dresser Industries, and certain of its affiliated debtors and debtors-in-possession. The Plan was confirmed by order entered on July 21, 2004, by the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, which order was affirmed by the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania on December 1, 2004.
The purpose of the Trust is to assume the asbestos liabilities of the debtors, Halliburton Company and certain of its affiliates related to the operations of Harbison-Walker Refractories Company, Kellogg Brown & Root, Inc., Dresser Industries, Inc. and certain other businesses, and to use the Trust’s assets and income to pay holders of those asbestos liabilities in such a way that all holders of similar asbestos claims, both current and future, are treated in a substantially equivalent manner.
Halliburton and its affiliates were granted the protection of a permanent channeling injunction entered by the Bankruptcy Court and the District Court in connection with the confirmation order. The injunction enjoins the assertions of these asbestos-related claims against those entities, and channels such claims to the Trust for resolution and payment.
The Trust is governed by a Trust Agreement and Trust Distribution Procedure (the “TDP”) that establish the framework and criteria for allowance and payment of asbestos-related claims. For each disease, the TDP establishes a claim amount which the Trust will allow if the medical and exposure requirements of the Trust are satisfied. Claimants also have an alternative to seek a more definitive review of their claim in which case claims may be allowed within a range of higher or lower claim amounts.
The Trust’s assets consist primarily of cash and investment securities, which are intended to be totally consumed by the allowance and payment of claims and operations of the Trust.
Court documents for the Trust are on file in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh Division, In Re: Mid-Valley, Inc., DII Industries, LLC, Kellogg Brown & Root, Inc., KBR Technical Services, Inc., Kellogg Brown & Root Engineering Corp., Kellogg Brown & Root International, Inc. The EPI Trust is organized to process, liquidate and pay all valid asbestos personal injury claims in accordance with the Claims Resolution Procedures. The Trust began accepting claims August 1, 1997.
EPI Exposure Requirements retrieved 2018/08/13 original source: https://www.cpf-inc.com/trusts/epi-trust/epi-exposure-requirements/
Section 7.1(a) of the Claims Resolution Procedures requires that claimants make a “conclusive demonstration of exposure to an EPI asbestos-containing product.” The EPI Trust has adopted a six-prong test to make this determination.
The six elements include:
the occupation and description of job duties that led to exposure to EPI asbestos-containing products;
a description of the industry where exposed, and how the asbestos-containing product was used in the industry;
employer(s) or job site(s) where the exposure occurred;
time period employed at each specific job site;
the nature of the injured person's exposure to EPI asbestos-containing products, including the frequency of exposure and the duration of exposure;
and
for non-asbestos manufacturers, all available evidence that conclusively demonstrates the presence of EPI asbestos-containing products at the site of the claimed exposure at the time the claimant worked at the site, including proofs of purchase, credible affidavits of those who purchased products, and identification of others knowledgeable of the products used or installed at the site.
EaglePitcher industries, a U.S. company, specialized in lead and zinc products as early as 1916, later producing a wide range of asbestos-conatining materials including insulation products used by the U.S. military ships and vehicles.
Those applications exposed U.S. Navy and shipyard workers to asbestos as were also exposed power plant and other industry workers.
From 1938 the company produced asbestos-containing insulation used on pipes and an insulating cement used on masonry buildings. EP asbestos-containing products were principally four:
Asbestos-block insulating products: HyloBlock and Supertemp Block used in very high temperature applications (to 1900 degF)
Asbestos-cement products used as an insulating material: Hylo Finishing Cement (made by Owens Corning, distributed by EP), One-Cote insulating cement, Super66 Insulating Cement
Asbestos-coatings: used as an insulating and weatherproofing coating, Insulseal, Spray-Mastic, Stalastic, Swetchek "B" paint-on or twowelon liquids or pastes that contained asbestos, asphalt, and petroleum vehicles
Asbestos pipe insulation & coverings, including EaglePitcher Pipe Covering & Hylo Pipe overing used in industrial processes.
In response to asbestos litigation the company filed for bankruptcy in 1991 and was reorganized in 1996, filed again in 2005, reorganized again in 2006.
The courts and the company established the EaglePitcher Asbestos Trust that began accepting claims in 1997.

Question: Did our demolition of a popcorn ceiling sprayed by a product from Murco Wall Products involve asbestos hazards?
Image: Murco Tex.M-1000 - current company product. While some Murco products contained asbestos, the current products, like this one, do not use asbestos. A company description of this current product is given below.
2021/04/10 by Anonymous:
I was doing some home clean-up and found an incredibly deteriorated bag of Murco M-1000 popcorn ceiling texture in a side shed outside.
https://www.murcowall.com/texture (at bottom of list). It fell apart as I tried to move it and I had to end up getting rid of it with a broom and blower.
I can't imagine a bag of texture has lasted through multiple owners since the house was built in 1978 (or 77). That'd be crazy to me. Still, we ran into asbestos in this house before (you and I had emailed about it a couple years back) so I'm always paranoid when I run into old building materials.
This product seems newer (even though the paper bag was a mess and could've been decades old) and is still sold by Murco (image on front of bag is the same), so I'm assuming things are ok but wanted to see if you had any knowledge I didn't. For what it's worth, this house did have popcorn ceilings in some spots (still does) and I tested multiple areas and they were all negative. I've also emailed Murco Wall. - Anonymous by private email
Moderator reply:
I understand that you got rid of the material itself but if you have the packaging I would like to see photos of all of the writing and labels and date codes
Reader follow-up:
I’m really sorry I don’t have that. The bag was really falling apart. The attached pic is how it looked, though (stock pic). The bag had browned/yellowed.
There was one part of the side of the bag that had the word asbestos on it, but I’m guessing it was more a general warning about it using respirators.
Sorry I don’t have more info than that. Bag had been outside for years and years and was just a mess. I can let you know what the company says.
Attaching a new one of how the bag looks (not the actual bag in question). It is just popcorn ceiling texture. A powdery substance and little pieces of styrofoam. The bag even says "vinyl base" on it, which I assume is to try and communicate "No asbestos." :-)
Moderator reply: asbestos in some older Murco products but not current Murco wall products.
You are showing the CURRENT Murco product, about which the company says
Murco M-1000
A powder product with polystyrene aggregated which produces a simulated acoustical ceiling finish. Designed for use on interior ceiling only. Available in fine, medium, and coarse aggregate sizes.
Can be used on gypsum panels, wood concrete, and plaster. High hide with exceptional whiteness make it ideal for covering surface defects and taping seams. This product may or may not be painted.
Three sizes available for simulated acoustic, high hide exceptionally white color, less fallout for more coverage, better wet viscosity control to prevent aggregate separation, and better spraying properties to prevent fallout.
To address an asbestos question with data rather than speculation you would at the very least want to specify the particular building's country, city, age, and history of renovations so that we might have some idea when the spray-on popcorn ceiling or textured wall coating was applied.
You can see a list of products produced by Murco that contained asbestos at ASBESTOS PRODUCING COMPANIES & TRUSTS to find Murco's products go to that page and go to its "M" section OR use your browser's on page search (ctrl-F) to find "MURCO"
Case Law Includes Asbestos Litigation involving Murco Wall Products
Murco, in various court cases, defended against asbestos claims, for various reasons including asserting that specific products did not contain asbestos or that Murco did not sell products in states where claimants asserted that Murco products were used (there is confusion here about franchising, and actual sales).
Michael Galier. v. Murco & Welco, an Oklahoma lawsuit, filed in 2012, decided in May 2015, in which asbestos plaintiff's claims against the Texas company Murco Wall Products and Missouri manufacturer Welco Manufacturing Co.: The Oklahoma the jury found in favor of Michael. Murco & Welco were to jointly pay plaintiff $6 million in asbestos mesothelioma damages. The jury did not award punitive damages.

v.
Michael D. Galier, November 16, 2017, Court of Civil Appeals of Oklahoma, First Division, Case Numbers:(114,175; 114,183), Decision Date:February 3, 2017,
Excerpts: Petitioner Murco Wall Products, Inc. (“Murco”) hasgrossly distorted the facts underlying Oklahoma’sexercise of personal jurisdiction in this case. Murcofails to acknowledge the critical fact that RespondentMichael Galier (“Galier”) was injured by Murco jointcompound products in the state of Oklahoma as a consequence of Murco’s direct sales of those products toOklahoma. Every relevant event in this case occurredin Oklahoma.
The jury found that Galier developed malignant mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer, as a result of his repeated exposure to asbestos from Murco joint compound products at construction sites in Oklahoma City.
Galier’s product liability claimsagainst Murco arose from Murco’s substantial sales activity in Oklahoma. This is a textbook case of specific personal jurisdiction.
Given the highly fact-specific nature of this caseand the unremarkable legal issues presented, the Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals affirmed the jury’s verdict for Galier in an unpublished decision.
Under theRules of the Oklahoma Supreme Court, unpublished decisions lack persuasive or precedential value and cannot be cited. Murco has failed to identify a single compelling reason for this Court to grant certiorari.
Murco asked the court to review the Galier 2015 ruling, the court declined as explained above.
- note this data does not describe older Murco products containing asbestos.
Voss v. Murco Wall Products, et al. - Polsinelli No. 51-L-55 3rd Judicial Circuit Madison County IL 20Oct 2015
"Stobbs rules MC asbestos court lacks personal jurisidction over Texan defendant; Murco's joint compound blend also did not contain asbestos", The Madison County Record, | Nov 4, 2015
Bottom line: ok so you removed Murco wall products material that probably contained asbestos. What now?
Be sure that asbestos-suspect dust from prior demolition has been thoroughly cleaned-up.
That means that all reasonable cleaning steps have been taken: damp wiping and HEPA vacuuming and if necessary, laundering or dry-cleaing of soft-goods.
Watch out: do not use an ordinary household vacuum cleaner if you suspect there is asbestos dust present as those small particles will go right throug the vacuum cleaner and will be more airborne than ever- you'll increase any risk of breathing harmful dust (if in fact it's present, which we don't know).
Should you have asbestos tests performed?
Probably not but in any case, to get beyond arm-waving speculation and to base any health or economic decisions on fact, you'd need to hire an environmental professional.
Watch out: do not hire someone simply to stop by to do a "test" (that approach of testing by itself is fundamentally flawed) for asbestos.
Air testing for airborne particles has a use as a tool in the hands of an expert but such tests are fundamentally inaccurate even when the numbers given are very precise.
An air test that says it found 193 particles of asbestos in air could be off by up to 4 orders of magnitude depending on how the test was conducted.
So the "true" number might be less than 1 asbestos fiber per liter or cubic meter of air, or it might be 19 or 193 or 19,300 or 193,000 or 1,930,000 particles per cubic meter of air.
Don't confuse precision ( a number with lots of digits or decimal places) with accuracy (is it actually close to reality?)
Even if such a test suggests there's a hazard it's not prescriptive. You'd have to hire someone all over again to inspect and test enough to say what cleanup is needed. And beacause of the significant risk of a false negative, a test that says "no problem found" is usually not reliable.
An expert would need to take a case history, inspect the building, decide what if any environmental testing would be useful, and to do that along with a written report of findings and advice about what further cleaning or other steps are justified and appropriate.
It is not clear that such is needed, appropriate, nor useful, for the case you describe.
If you want to do some low-cost "asbestos testing" to make yourself more-comfortable, You could use a surface vacuum test or tape test to see if an environmental test lab finds significant levels of harmful asbestos remaining in representative samples of house dust taken from horizontal surfaces in your home, choosing representative areas where you spend time, that have not been cleaned for a while and that might capture the "worst case" presence of harmful dust.
This is not a quantitative approach but if, for example, a lab reported a significant level of asbestos in such a dust sample, the additional professional cleaning could be appropriate.
Has My Family's Health Been Affected by Exposure to Asbestos-Dust from Murco ceiling paint or some other product?
No one can offer a useful answer to that question as we have not one iota of data about your family member's level of exposure, duration of exposure, personal health history, nor any other health factors.
In our OPINION, in some cases the anxiety over hazardous material exposure may itself have more-harmful health effects than the original exposure itself.
Ask your doctor about your concerns and follow her advice. If she opines that further testing for asbestos-related health effects is warranted there are procedures that can be effective (in some cases).

Asbestos was thus used in many National Gypsum Gold Bond™ gypsum board products produced between 1950 and 1970. Asbestos was not used in National Gypsum gypsum-board products after that year.
Below is a list of National Gypsum Products believed to contain asbestos. National Gypsum's wallboard was produced as early as 1925 when the company was founded and extended at least into the 1970's along with other asbestos-containing products listed below.
Not all National Gypsum products and not all Gold Bond™ products necessarily contained asbestos. National Gypsum will certainly have produced products that did not contain asbestos, such as cellulose-based or wood-fiber-based insulating boards like those described
Wood or other cellulose used to produce insulating board (IB) not an asbestos containing material.
However as we discuss further
at SHEATHING, FIBERBOARD ASBESTOS CONTENTsome of those non-asbestos products may have been cross-contaminated with asbestos if they were made at a facility where asbestos was being processed.
The National Gypsum company declared bankruptcy in 1990 and emerged in 1993 when the National Gypsum Corporation Settlement Trust (NGC Trust) was funded to settle asbestos liability claims. Quite a few law firms solicit clients
who may be entitled to payments out of the NGC trust.

Abstract
Asbestos mining never represented more than 20% of the total asbestos consumption in France.
Mining shut down in 1952 in the Queyras (Meyries mine) and in 1962 in Corse (Corse Cape mine).
From 1962 to 1997, at which time asbestos was banned in France, all asbestos was imported from
Quebec, Russia and South Africa.
The asbestos industry in France has been dominated by two
multinational firms: Saint Gobain (in particular the Everite branch) and Eternit (the Belgian
group, currently named Etex). In France, Saint Gobain specialized in sprayed asbestos for
insulation through its subsidiary Wanner Isofi.
Another Saint Gobain subsidiary – Everite – and
Eternit-Belgium were the two main operators in the asbestos cement market.
Saint Gobain in cooperation with Eternit-Switzerland became the third asbestos producer in the
world through their Brazilian mining interests.
Since the 1960s the Saint Gobain & Eternit
subsidiary, SAMA, has been exploiting the Brazilian mine in Goias, even though asbestos has been
banned in France since 1997. The asbestos-cement market in Brazil has been dominated by
Brasilit, the Brazilian subsidiary of Saint Gobain, and Eternit-Switzerland.
Saint Gobain's managers were completely aware of the asbestos health effects when they began
asbestos mining in Brazil.
But the firm applied constantly a strategy of double standards.
The paper will compare the strategies of the firm in the two countries in relation to three main
aspects: the control of the asbestos market, the control of the information about the health effects of
asbestos, the reaction to the collective action of the victims claiming justice.

Gary,
Thank you for that helpful detail.
Can you name the flooring products?
There have been class action lawsuits and various trust funds have been set up to give at least some financial support two people injured by asbestos exposure, especially workers.
If you need help finding those let me know and I will direct you.
You need to be able to name the company or companies where you worked and the years that you were there.
