My home has broken Homart Starspray Acoustical Ceiling Tiles which were purchased and installed sometime in the 1950's or 1960's. How can I find out if this was asbestos? The product number is #8445. Help! - Anon 7/20/11
I'd like to see some sharp photos of those ceiling tiles (see our CONTACT link at the ARTICLE INDEX the bottom of this article or bottom or top). From the age of your ceiling tiles, that they are asbestos-containing is a reasonable assumption.
If you need to know for sure, you can send a small sample to a certified asbestos testing laboratory - it's not expensive.
(Best to check with the lab about what procedure they want you to use to collect a sample, basically you pick an unobtrusive area, avoid creating a dusty mess, wet down and remove 1/2" fragment).

Very useful article. Thanks. Wondering if homes are ever condemned due to excessive asbestos. - Anthony Kaskin 6/17/11
Not that I know of personally, Anthony.
Usually the cleanup cost is less than the value of the home; of course for a home that has been abandoned, beaten badly, in poor shape, finding the added cost of the need for an asbestos cleanup could push it over the edge.

@Leo,
Continuing:
We've been researching / searching for authoritative data on the question of asbestos in Sears Homart ceiling tiles for some years now and regret that we have not yet found an unequivocal answer. So prudent would be to treat the materials as "PACM" - Presumed Asbestos Containing Material.
History of Sears Homart Brand Products & List of Homart Products
The Sears or Sears Roebuck "Homart" brand included a very broad range of building products at least some of which almost certainly DID contain asbestos, but that's to broad a brush to tar the ceiling tiles as well.
In the list we'll provide below some products such as metal materials or mineral wool insulation would, quite obviously, not be candidates for inclusion of asbestos, while others such as roofing products, asphalt impregnated felt or panels, and some flooring or ceiling products may indeed contain asbestos.
Sears HOMART products included at least the following (from the U.S. Official Gazette of the United States Patent Office, March 22, 1949, p. 992,

@Leo,
Depending on the age of your ceiling tiles, that they are asbestos-containing is a reasonable assumption.
They could also be a cellulose or wood based product. It's hard to know from just a photo.
There certainly are new products available that don't contain asbestos and you're not at all likely to find that type of old product from the 1980s or older still available.

Is there any way we can find a small purchase of these tiles for replacement pieces. This is referring to David's request 04/2020. Thanks in advance.
That looks like a random perforated acoustic ceiling tile, typically a cellulose or wood based product.
I have not seen that exact pattern still sold by the larger ceiling tile manufacturers like Armstrong but there are quite similar versions.
