American Water Heater was founded in 1996, based in Johnson City TN., GSW, a long-standing manufacturer or water heaters located in Canada and with operations in both Canada and the United States was the parent company of American Water Heater company from 2002 ro 2006.
On 3 April 2006, American Water Heater under the aegis of GSW was purchased by A. O. Smith Water Products Co.. The company also operates in Mexico, Nanjing China, and Veldhoven, Netherlands.
Photo: data tag on an American Water Heater, showing serial number 9950123040. This serial number decodes to 1999 week 50.
Check the American-brand water heater serial number, not the model number to find and decode the water age.
A TruFlo water heater was made by American (Tru-Test or Tru Value water heaters) or by U.S. Craftsmaster, then the age is encoded in the serial number as follows:
First two digits of the serial number are the year
Second two digits of the serial number are the week
Example: 9201nnnnn would translate as 1992, first week [i.e. January 1-7 in 1992]
or for American Appliance Water Heaters or for American Water Heater Group you may encounter:
Note that this decoding won't work for older American Appliance Mfg. Corp. water heaters such as BN's water heater label shown just below and sporting serial Number A 2363113.
Stating the age of the building can set some reasonable-limits on guessing at the manufacture date for older American Appliance water heaters whose serial number doesn't follow the later standard format.
What's the age of the building? That sets a reasonable floor under the question of heater age.
EG: is this a reasonable decoding: A WWYYnnn - week 23 year 63 - or is your building's age post 1963?
EG: or for a much newer age - A nnnWWYY - week 31 year 13? - No, that is not reasonable - from the brand name history as well as the label's appearance, we can be sure that this water heater is older than 2013.
The American Water Heater Company, founded around 1972, was merged into GSW in 2002 and in turn GSW later merged into AO Smith.
For water heaters made in common by or for American and AO Smith you may encounter:

That's not a 1923 font on the label. ASNI is 1979. What year could this be? - BN 2022/04/05

@BN,
Thanks for the photo.
You're spot-on that applying a sanity check such as the ANSI label, and even better, adding the age of the building, set some reasonable-limits on guessing at the manufacture date for older American Appliance water heaters whose serial number doesn't follow the later standard format.
What's the age of the building? That sets a reasonable floor under the question of heater age.
EG: could it be A WWYY - week 23 year 63 - or is your building's age post 1963? = best guess
EG: The answer would be NO, for a guess at much newer age - AnnnWWYY - week 31 year 13? - Not at all likely given that the company was not longer doing business under that name in that year.

Im looking for a service manual that covers the American 19 gal. electric water heater model #HEFR22STRL serial # 8926200688 its been in use less than 1 month and stopped heating the water. any help would be welcome, thanks
Chris,
I've searched for an American Water heater model HEFR22STRL with no success. That model is not even listed at the American Water Heater co's website listing all of their water heater manuals.
Please post a photo of the water heater's data tag as that may help me look further.
The only 19-gallon American water heater the AMERICAN 19-GALLON ELECTRIC WATER HEATER E61-19L-045DV [PDF] we've found has this service manual:
Thoughts about this water heater? Is it from 1985?

That's a reasonable guess.
The serial number of your water heater is given as
A854892
AYYWW1234 where YY is year of manufacture and WW is week of manufacture
So our guess at the date of manufacture and thus the age of your water heater is week 48 in the year 1985.
I own a house that was built in 1971. I've owned it for over 3 years and the previous owners used it for a summer home for 10 years. I was trying to find the age of my water heater. I was wondering if you could help.
It's an American Appliance Mfg. Corp. Closest I got was the company in Santa Monica, CA is permanently closed. Picture is attached. - Anonymous by private email 2018/03/01
I see a serial number A 1381859 on a Dyna-Flow water heater.
The Dyna-Flow water heater is made by American Appliance Manufacturers, Inc. - I have placed this information here under Amerian Water Heater. Co. pending more information.
A plausible guess is that the age of this water heater is encoded as A WWYY123
If that's correct the heaer was made in the 13th week of 1983. I'm researching the question further.
The original American Appliance Manufacturing Company was founded ca 1952 by Everett S. Todd and Bert Sutton in Santa Monica California in 1952. the company later became Mor-Flo American, or Mor-Flo Water Heaters. Mr. Todd passed away in California in April, 1990.
In 1981 American Appliance Manufacturing Company, in Santa Monica CA, was focused on solar water heaters until 1992 when the company left that city.
The currennt (2018) American Water Heater Company (described above) includes in the company's current product line the DynaClean™ Automatic Sediment-Cleaning System** that may be a coincidental use of the Dyna- phrase or might be a descendant of Dyna-Flow water heaters.
The current (2018) American Appliance Manfuacturing Co., a producer of appliance parts, and given below, is a different company.

That's a reasonable guess.

I have an American Appliance Water Heater with a serial that reads ER42-10. Where can i find replacement parts?
On 2019-09-30 - by (mod) -
That looks to me like an American Appliance Water Heater data tag, Tim.
Look around on that electric water heater for a brand name and logo - and attach those photos and it'll make it more-likely that we can find the manual.
Meanwhile, for most water heaters the testing and repair of the heating elements themselves is pretty standard - you'll see electric water heater test and repair articles in the ARTICLE INDEX found just above.

I have an American Appliance Mfg. water heater, model G53H-6, serial no. A 1929771. Manufactured at Plant A. How old is it. None of the age calculators using the serial number seem to work.

I have an old American Appliance electric water heater that has a reset button that trips every few days. The serial number is 01459-10-14-9 and the model number is 30 AMGH. Could you tell me how old it is and who I might get in touch with to perhaps find new controls with a new reset button?
Thank you,
Doug

Debbie
Based on the decoding tips in the article above reasonable guess for your water heater would be either week 4 or the month of April 1979.
Does that make sense vs. the age of your building?

I have an old American Appliance Water heater that just gave out yesterday. The Serial number is S047939 and the model number is 27000. Could you tell me how old it is and what would be a comparable replacement? It is a 115 lb capacity tank.
Thank you,
Debbie
