Fleck water softeners are the product of a number of patented water softener and valve inventions and improvements by Andrew J. Fleckenstein and Lambert W. Fleckenstein (cited below).
The Fleckensteins patented a number of water softener controls and featers between (at least) 1963 and 1981.
The following list of water softener or water conditioner manuals is for all Fleck water softeners.
Here with illustrations & links to operation, installation, and service manuals we provide information for you to identify your water softener and find its IO Manual .

Below: Fleck 2750 Water Softener
Thanks to InspectApedia.com Luke for the Fleck 5600-SXT water softener photo above.
Above, the discontinued Fleck Twin-Flow 100-E Water Softener, cited below.
...
Included here are manual or non-electric water softener or water treatment backwash or regeneration control valves from Fleck. Below are 3/4" pipe size softener control heads (or "valves" in some sources) unless we note other sizes.
Above and continuing below are example photos of current Autotrol, Fleck, and Pentair water softener models are given below and can be read-about in detail at the Fleck website link given just above.
Fleck controls may appear on other water treatment equipment sold under different brands.
Currently (2015) the FleckValves.com website cited below is an independent distributor, while Fleck® is a trademark of Pentair, Inc. whose products include these brand names: Pentair, Pentair Aquatic Eco-Systems, Kreepy Krauly, Everpure, Shurflo and Delta Environmental.
The Fleck water softener photos shown here were provided by a reader (Aug. 2015) and did not contain a brand identification label, but the US Patent numbers on the equipment confirmed the manufacturer.
... trying to figure out what this is. It looks like an old fleck but there are no numbers or anything really helpful. I have a serial number but that's about it. I'm also trying to figure out the name of the part in the last picture where the hose connects to the head and where i might find a replacement.
The plastic has degraded so bad that there is nothing holding the fitting in and now it leaks. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. If you need any other photos or any info to better identify let me know.
From the patent numbers most likely you are correct that this is a Fleck® Controls water softener or possibly more accurately, a water softener using valves or controls designed by Fleck Valves, as those may appear on more than one water softener brand including Fleck, Fleck ProFlo, Autotrol, and Autotrol Performa and possibly also on some Pentair water softeners.
You can find parts for Fleck water softener controls via the contact links we give below.
While we don't know the specific model of your Fleck® water softener, the serial number can sometimes decode into the month and year of manufacture. That information, combined with a bit of product history, can tell us the possible models. Your model serial number is 1697619.
In any event, many of the Fleck softener parts are interchangeable across model years. The control details in your photo suggest this is an older model indeed, as it does not seem to match the Fleck 1500, 2500, 2510, 5600, 8500, 9000 nor 9100 models most popularly listed in 2015.
We also include some of the water softener valve and timing motor sketches from Fleckenstein's patent applications as those illustrations also help identify Fleck water treatment equipment, controls, and features.
Fleck water softeners are currently sold by a variety of distributors as well as at online retailers such as Amazon.com in at least the following models:
Fleck / Pentair 2510, Fleck / Pentair 2750, Fleck / Pentair 2850 & 2850s, Fleck / Pentair 2900s, Fleck / Pentair 3150 & 3900, Fleck / Pentair 5000 & 5600, , Fleck 5600SXT, Fleck 7000 sxt, and Fleck 9100SXT, Fleck / Pentair 5800 series water softeners, Fleck / Pentair 9000, 9100 & 95oo water softeners.

Absolutely. I purchased this softener at auction - at a very fair price. It appears, on the outside, to have had light duty - and I would like to perform all needed maintenance (o rings, resin, etc) and put it back into service. I am reluctant to invest time and $$ into this softener without any manufacturer info. Thanks for your support so far!
On 2019-10-27 by (mod) - Tracing patent numbers gives the earliest date for a water softener as well as it's probable manufacturer
Or you're right that's not a controller that's familiar to me either. However can we be clear on what problem we're solving? Is it that system simply doesn't work?
The patent citations (I've added them below) tell us that the design for this water softener dates back as early as 1981, though of course your individual softener could be newer (or it could be "new old stock").
Tip for other readers: if you want to find the "newest" or "youngest" date associated with a water softener, use Google Scholar to search for the highest patent number shown. For this softener that was Patent 4290451 issued in 1981. See this

I ran the patent #'s and found them to be Fleckenstein (the latest patent dated 1980) - but this control head does not show up anywhere. It has a unique vertical profile with 3 knobs - a distinctive combination. I exhausted Google image searches and many softener system manufacture sites - with no joy.
This control head must not have been very popular based on its lack of web presence. In light of that, and the age of the system, it is time for Plan B - break down and purchase a new system. Thanks for your comprehensive website - it provided lots of resources to explore.
Any thoughts on a best value new system? -Paul
Here is a picture of the patents tag. Thanks again.

Good going Sara, sending along that patent number. From that we can find the actual patent - that I cite below, And from that we can figure that the control on which you probably found this tag was for a Fleck brand water softener, or depending on its age, a Pentair water softener as I'll explain. The patent cited below matches the number on your water softener control:
Fleckenstein, Andrew J., and Michael C. Mortl. "Control system for meter actuated regeneration in a water treatment system." U.S. Patent 4,313,825, issued February 2, 1982.
Fleckstein, an inventor of a number of water softener parts and controls, is the progenitor of Fleck Water Softener Company, currently owned by Pentair.

Photo: an early Fleck 5600 SE water softener per reader Neil Addison's comment 2019/07/29.
In 1955, L.W. Fleckenstein patented the original Fleck Closure, a quick and easy cover for water softener tanks. Fleck valves became a widely-used and nearly-generic water softener control.
Currently Fleck Controls is owned by PENTAIR WATER SOFTENERS [link to Pentair in this article]
Below: photos of a Fleck water softener control head whose patent numbers include patents up through 4290851 shown above. Patent numbers on a tag like that shown below usually are arranged from oldest to newst, the newest or latest being the highest U.S. patent number.
So we can take the date of that patent as the oldest likely date of the water softener on which that control head is found.

What brand of water softener is this?
The picture is above On 2019-10-30 by Luke
by (mod) - Fleck 5600 SXT.
Luke:
The water softener in your photo is made by Fleckstein or "Fleck" water softeners, A Fleck 5600 SXT.
But take care: Fleckstein as do other major water softener manufacturers often produce equipment that is re-labeled and sold under regional or even local water softener brands.
It would be helpful to
- have the age of the softener in your photo or at least the age of the home where it is installed, as well as the country and city of location
- to see photos (1 per comment) of any labels, patent number stickers, etc. you find on the back of the control head or inside the control head cover or elsewhere on the equipment.

Kip:
After inspecting all of the exterior of the control head, try removing the cover. There is likely to be a data tag inside the cover or on the control head giving the model number.

by (mod) - Older Fleck 5600SE
I'm not sure I've seen that exact control head before but
this looks like a Fleck / Pentair Water Softener,
possibly an older GE LOGIX softener aka Fleck 5600SE
It may be useful to know that often there are generic controls sold under various brands.
Take a look carefully on all sides of the control head and also inside the cover
and I think you'll see at least one sticker that will give part number and perhaps a manufacturers name. If you see something like that post a photo and I will research it further
At our water softener manuals page (links given above and at page end) you will find contact information for Fleck / Pentair.
