On 2018-12-12 by (mod) - I turned off power to my pump but water is still flowing to my house
Johnny
Is this an artesian well? If so it could be delivering water without a pump.
On 2018-11-15 by Johnny
So I have cut the power to my water pump but my well is still sending water to the house, albeit at a lower pressure, but still sufficient for all our needs. My well is over 200ft deep and the line from the well to my house is about 600ft, uphill. I am certain my pump is off, is it possible to still get pressure from my well? That seems crazy.

I found this while reading the FAQ's on Pump won't shut off section: "On 2016-12-11 09:41:35.631239 by (mod)
if your pump will not turn off problem is not pressure tank instead of the problem is most likely one of the topics listed in WATER PUMP WONT STOP RUNNING.
if the system pressure is not able to reach the cut-off point the article WATER PUMP WONT STOP RUNNING gives the reasons.
Caucasian [sic should have read "often" ] debris clogging the pressure control switch prevents it from correctly sensing pressure and therefore it doesn't turn off the pump. The repair would be to replace the switch for that case."
Now why did you have to bring race into the discussion? (Caucasian debris) Lol! made me chuckle!

That sounds to me as if the pump is taking water out of the well faster than the well can produce more water - in other words you're exceeding the flow rate of the well.

I have a pump that pulls water from a lake into a tank and then runs into lines to distribute the water to hose bibs, etc.
Recently the pump has started running longer than normal and at a higher psi than normal - psi running to approximately 52 psi
- before it finally shuts off. I've shut off the valve from the tank to the distribution lines and it doesn't make a difference in terms of the length of time the pump runs. I'm not sure where to check next
- my suspicions are the pressure switch, the float/check valve on the tank and the foot valve. Any thoughts and/or recommendations.

Darn.
If a pump runs for a long period with no water it risks overheating and failure of the impeller or pump bearings. If you're now sure that the pump has been properly primed and still get no pressure then I suspect that's what happened.

Robin: If the pressure setting on the control is higher than the pump can reach it won't stop; or the pump isn't primed - do not let the pump run dry or it'll be damaged.

On 2017-01-27 0 by (mod) - if the pump can never reach above a relatively low pressure
Shane if the pump can never reach above a relatively low pressure the cause is probably one of those listed in the article above, such as a damaged pump. Horsepower is not the whole story - the pump impeller may be damaged. Spinning but not well enough sealed to push water.

Ok I been at this for a month I hand drove a new spike well. It is a bout a foot from old one as the pipes were really corroded. Old well was there over 60 years. It's about 18 feet down . So everything is new.
The jet pump only reaches 22lbs never higher no matter what I do tried everything but get new pump. As soon as I open the line to the house the pressure drops if I close it quick it builds up to same 22 n keep running. I cleaned it redid black pipe there's no air coming up the pipe that I can tell. Had several people look at it nothing. But them saying junk pump. It's a 1/2 hp from tractor supply. Pump/blater combo. I am disabled from an accident n can't afford to just throw money around. That 1/2 hp should be plenty to pump water. What could it be Iam sooo mad over it. I can't get anywhere. Please help.

I am dealing with a shallow well jet pump that won't reach pressure now.
For the last let's say 2 weeks we would randomly loose pressure in the house. Always with the washing machine on the second floor or if my wife ran a bath. It was always easy to get water back all I had to do was re prime it and it would be fine.
We could shower on the main floor of the house do dishes etc no issues.
Now it happened twice that we woke up to no water. I think from the water softener regenerating overnight. Yesterday I primed the pump it ran and was fine. Today I primed the pump it ran. But would not build pressure over 40 psi. So I tried another motor and same result.
I cleaned out the Venturi and everything inside and same result. I even made a gasket because I noticed a leak in the face where it bolts to the motor. The leak stopped but I'm getting the same result
. I don't believe I'm looking at a foot valve issue as the well line holds water.
Is this just a pump or low water in the well or could it be something else?

The causes of a pump that runs-on that we've been able to find and explain are listed in the article above.
A lost air charge wouldn't cause the trouble: that'd cause pump short-cycling on and off.

i RECENTLY DISCONNECTED MY PRESSURE TANK TO DO SOME MAINTENANCE ON THE PLATFORM ON WHICH IT SITS. WHEN i TURNED IT BACK ON AND PURGDED THE AIR THE PUMP JUST KEEPS RUNNING AND WILL NOT SHUT OFF. cOULD IT BE THAT i LOST THE AIR IN THE TANK ?

I have a Craftsman well pump and last night the pump began to “kick on” approximately every 10 minutes for about one or two seconds each time. The pressure gauge reads 48. Can I simply add some air into the bladder tank to see if this solves my problem?
On 2016-03-23 by (mod) -
Jim:
As your pump is not turning on until pressure is below the CUT-IN Pressure set on your switch, either the switch is not set where you think it is, or the pressure sensor is not working. That could be due to debris blockage in the mounting tube or tube that conducts water pressure to the sensor port on the bottom of the pressure control switch.
OR the pump is turning on when it should but a leak in well piping, low well water, a damaged pump impeller, or similar problem is preventing the pump from reaching a higher pressure.
Cycling the switch rapidly off and back on and then seeing proper pump operation makes me think that a low water pump protection circuit is installed and is not working properly.

Well is 180 feet deep.
1/2 HP pump set at 120 feet.
Pump was replaced in 2013.
Just replaced both 40 gallon Amtrol Well X Trol pressure tanks as the old ones were leaking.
Switch is set to cut on at 30 pounds and to cut off at 60 pounds.
Since tanks were replaced, the pressure falls all the way to 20 pounds with pump running constantly.
Pump will not build up any further than 20 pounds and runs constantly with no increase in pressure.
Turning power switch OFF then immediately ON causes pressure to start building immediately and then runs up to 60 pounds in about 3 minutes.
There are no water leaks anywhere, no commode leaks, no running water anywhere.
This same scenario has repeated 4 times over the past week with exact same results.
If I do not turn the pump power off then on, the water pressure stays low at 20 pounds.
As soon as I turn pump power off then on, the water pressure is back fine.
This problem never happened before installing the new tanks.
Help please ?
Thanks in advance.

Please take another look at the article above that lists reasons why the pump keeps running.
On 2016-03-07 by (mod) -
I can't say, Pablo. What you describe sounds odd, unless the well casing collapsed or was otherwise damaged or blocked at a depth somewhere near the 60 meter point.
Certainly if the well is a drilled well with a casing and the depth of unblocked functional well is 180 meters, when you set the pump so high you are missing taking advantage of the large static head or reservoir of water in the well, increasing pump run frequency and thus shortening equipment life.
On 2016-03-07 10:56:44.776981 by Pablo
what is the reason why the well pump is at 55-60 meters when the well was drilled to a depth of 180 meters.

Have had problems for a long time with parents well/pump. It will pump water fine as long as the pump is on & running, they have been using the breaker box to turn it on and off themselves, as it will never reach shut-off. Today we installed all new lines UNDER the pump (down into the well) and a new pump.
Turned it on, water coming out fine just as before
- let everything run for a while with all water open to get air out of the lines. Seemed like all air was out and the pump was running at 22lbs.
After turning everything off and letting the pump run for about 10 mins, it had dropped to 15lbs. Any idea what is going on? ---able to take a 30 min shower on full blast and have steady water, so I dont think its a problem with the water level
On 2015-05-30 by (mod) -
Bob if your pump can't reach a shutoff pressure of 28 psi there is a problem to be found. It could be at the pump (damaged or clogged impeller), low voltage, a piping leak, water running in the house, or at the control - such as a debris clogged pressure switch sensor. Start by making an independent measurement of the water pressure.

Have a Craftsman 3/4 Hp Jet pump that has worked well for many years (only ocasionally for when the main water is out)
but now it wont go past 40psi and it wont turn off, the cuttoff pressure was 60 it came set from factory to 40/60, everything else looks ok,
even when closing the outgoing pipe it will not go past 40psi,
i adjusted the pressure switch to 20/40 and it works normally however the pressure is enough to reach all of my house but not sure what is wrong or what should be replaced (if its a normal wear item). Any help is welcome.

Any pressure tank, whether it uses an internal bladder or not, is normally no more than about 1/2 to 2/3 full of water at the END of a pump-on cycle.
As water enters the tank the air is compressed until the whole water system reaches the CUT OFF pressure set on the pressure control switch.
Typically the switch is set to 20 psi CUT IN and 40 psi CUT OUT (called a 20/40 switch) or it's set to 30-50 psi.
What your well guy said doesn't make sense to me. If the pump can send any water to the house it can send that same water into the pressure tank.
However it's probably just a matter of communicating clearly.
Certainly if the pump cannot reach the CUT OFF pressure it will keep running.
I think you meant to ask why your four-foot tall water pressure tank would be empty.
If it is really totally empty then the problem isn't the pump it's the tank (a collapsed or stuck internal bladder, for example, can keep water from entering the tank)..
However let's not let that distract us from the PUMP WON'T STOP problem. That has nothing to do with the pressure tank whatsoever.
The article WATER PUMP WONT STOP RUNNING explains the reasons that a pump might not stop.
Problems are basically
- water is flowing into the well itself too slowly
- the pump itself is damaged, for example a damaged impeller
- there is a plumbing leak that lets water out while the pump is trying to send water in to the house
- water is running in the building

My pump did not stop running, and the 32 gallon pressure tank was staying empty,
I got water in the house all right, but pressure would fluctuate. thought it was the tank, but the well guy said it was the pump not pumping enough to put water in the tank.
He said it was normal for the tank to have very little water in it ( has bladder in it). my question is why do I have a four foot tall tank if there is supposed to be no water in it?

Al,
You're at the right article. When a well pump won't shut off the cause is probably one of the reasons given at WATER PUMP WONT STOP RUNNING. Please take a look and let me know what questions remain.
Hint: how are you reporting gauge is not exceeding 12 psi but saying the bladder tank pressure is 34 psi?
By separate measurement at the pressure tank? One of these measurements may be wrong. If the tank is connected to house piping and the tank pressure were 34 psi, with no water running you'd see 34 psi at any house test point.

To provide further details I have a foot valve installed at the tank output line and I disconnect those lines each fall as well. I checked and the foot valve is installed in the correct direction.

I meant tank not take as a source, sorry
On 2018-05-24 01:01:36.342576 by Fred - I guess it might be possible for a mouse or some other debris to be partially clogging the lines
I have a jet pump that has worked for years. Originally it pumped from my pond into a 2" line which branched off into smaller lined for irrigation purposes. I could irrigate 15 fruit trees with spriklers or use five rain bird heads to irrigate my vegetable garden. Every winter I drain the lines and they stay drained until the last freeze risk has passed.
I changed from the pond as a source to a 2500 gal take which I fill from our creek. I hooked up the pump and primed it then turned it on, making sure to drain all the air out of the lines before closing each valve.
The pump is moving water and seems to be charging the lines but it won't turn off.
I checked the pressure switch and saw a small piece of straw on the electrical side of the rubber pad. I removed the switch and cleaned it
I can shut the pump off by manually moving the contact points. They seem free but don't move of their own volition. I installed a gauge on the pump and it is about 38psi. I don't know the original settings of the pressure switch but nobody has moved the adjustment nut since i am the only here to touch it.
I bought a new switch but I am reluctant to install it since it is rated at 30/50 psi. even a 20/40 switch would not be reaching the shut off pressure if I understand what I am seeing. Any ideas.
Additionally when I disconnect the lines at the pump and shut off the electricity each fall the pipe ends are left open so I guess it might be possible for a mouse or some other debris to be partially clogging the lines but since the pump appears to be moving water I don't see how that could be the problem. Also my water filter on the water line does not sow any sign of debris moving through the water

If your water pump runs continuously or frequently is turning on and off, there's a problem to find and fix: running water, a water pipe leak, a well pipe leak, a bad check valve in the system or in the well.
If there is extra air entering the system that could indeed be an indication of a hole or leak in well piping, even inside the well, combined with a bad foot valve or check valve at the bottom of well piping. If that's the case, the pump turns off, water runs back down the well pipe (bad foot valve), drawing air into the well piping at the same time.
When the pump cycles on again (pressure falls enough or water is being run in the home) that air is pushed into the building water supply system.
When a pump is running frequently while water is in use, that's pump short cycling due to a waterlogged pressure tank - search InspectAPedia for WELL PUMP SHORT CYCLING
I would review the diagnostic suggestions in the article WATER PUMP WONT STOP RUNNING.

I am a newer homeowner and new to wells and septic. I noticed while outside that the well pipe thing was running constantly and when close you can hear it click on and off every 10 seconds or so. I went into my basement and the switch thing is clicking on and off every 10 seconds or so as well.
I look at the pressure gauge and it clicks off at 60psi then drops to about 48 in about 10 seconds and then clicks back on and builds pressure back to 60 again and repeats.
Again this happens about every 10 seconds. I have no water running in the house and don't notice a difference in water pressure.
My wife thinks she noticed air buildup when first using water after getting home from working all day. What do I do?

If your well pump stops it may be due to a pump protection switch that senses that the pump is not getting water - that happens if the borehole or other well has run out of water.
There are of course other reasons a pump might stop: loose wires, bad control switch, or reaching the cutoff pressure.

I can't guess accurately: you may have a frozen well line or if you ran water long enough and fast enough you could have run the well dry.
If water pressure recovers after the well has rested a few hours it was a dry well. Else we've got to look for a frozen pipe, lost prime, or another NO WATER PRESSURE problem. (You can search InspectApedia for that phrase to read our diagnostic article)

My water froze throughout the house. Had hot water in upstairs bathroom, so left it running a little in the sink and tub. The pump came on, I let it go overnight, turned off the water I had running last night, now the pump keeps running. I shut the pump off. Now no water anywhere.
I get a few drips in the kitchen or upstairs bathroom then goes away. Toilets won't flush. Is there anything I should be doing. I have heat going to the pipes for a few hours so far. I turn my pump on, still keeps running.

The house water pump was running water earlier from the overflow line on the tank but no water inside at the sinks.
Later the pump kept running but no water at all is flowing so we shut off the pump to hopefully avoid excessive damage. Currently temperature is 8 degrees and expected to get up to low 30's around noon. Any suggestions???

Wayne,
I would be looking for either a leak in the well piping system or a bad check valve, or water running in the building that you have noticed such as a running toilet.

Kevin,
I'm not aware of a situation in which the pressure tank itself would cause you to never reach the cut-off pressure. Will likely it's one of the causes listed in the article on this page

My house water pressure is around twenty when, change the pressure switch same thing, the pump just stays on and never goes above 20psi, is it possible the it’s the pressure tank causing this issue or a well issue?

Pump will run up to 30 then just keeps running untill I cut power water can be used but pressure drops when the pump is off and no water is used changed the foot valve and it didn't change anything.

Checked all pipes but pump keeps running

Billy,
The cutoff pressure is not determined by the size of your water tank. Rather you said a number such as 40 psi or 50 PSI. If you set the pressure higher than what the pump is able to reach, then the pump will not turn off.

I have a 24 liters tank how many psi is the cut off pressure

I suspect the little plastic tube running from the pump to the switch is plugged after reading some articles. I believe it's called the flow sensing control ? With psi at 30 and my pump continuously runs and have ample water .
Changed the foot valve also . Was wondering how to disconnect the little plastic tube ?. Will I have water everywhere once disconnected?
Thanks

A bad water pressure tank itself would not be likely to affect a problem with priming the pump; More likely is a leak in well piping or a bad check valve or foot valve.
See PRIME the PUMP using a GARDEN HOSE as an example of priming a pump when you need a lot of water to do so. https://inspectapedia.com/water/Prime_The_Pump_by_Hose.php
That article also links to other pump priming methods

I am a first time well owner and learning the hard way. My well is only 100' and keeps running dry.
I am having it deepened next week but I have noticed something odd. I am getting very little water in the house and my pressure switch is closed but the pump is not running, I can not feel the vibration on the line from the well but I can detect current flow to the submersible pump.
I shut the breaker to the pump off for several hours so it wold not burn up. After about five hours I flipped on the breaker and everything started to work again. Do submersible well pumps have another shutoff on the motor if the well runs dry?

Jim,
If the pressure TANK pressure is above the 30 psi that you report is the pump's cut-in pressure the the pump will never turn on - set the tank air pre-charge (when pump is off and water has run until it stops) to 28 psi.
The fact that the pump continues to pump past its 50 psi cutoff setting is DANGEROUS risking a burst pipe or tank and injuring someone nearby. I would NOT run the pump under these conditions until the problem is fixed.
As you replaced the switch and the problem continues I suspect that either there's a wiring error or your switch is unable to properly sense water pressure in the system - for example that could be due to a clogged tube or pipe nipple that conducts water pressure to the switch.

Help.... pressure switch won't kick on and when you manually start it ..it won't shut off.. the other issue is pressure switch set to shut off at 50psi and goes to 90psi and the pump continues to run... we have replaced the switch which new switch is set at 30psi on 50psi off and it continues to do the same thing ...
