Watch out: Converting a gas appliance is dangerous if not done correctly and in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
Watch out: Most manufacturers require that installation and fuel conversions shall be performed by a trained and qualified service technician.
The technician should be sure to correctly identify the model number of your gas appliance so that s/he can follow the correct details of the manufacturer's instructions.
Illustration: in the cap of some appliance regulators is a simple part that flips over to convert between natural gas and LP gas. Of course the orifices need to be changed too.
Most LPG appliances but not all can be converted to natural gas
Most LPG appliances but not all can be converted to natural gas; contact the manufacturer of your cooker to ask for a gas conversion kit and follow their instructions. Typically you change out one or more gas orifices and change or modify the regulator.
Thermador sells ranges for natural gas (PRG366GH) and propane (PRL366GH) but apparently do not sell a conversion kit.
This seems strange considering we just moved from a house in the country using propane to a city house using natural gas and want to continue using an appliance we had made a significant investment.
Any ideas or experience converting this six burner range from LP to natural gas even though the manufacturer does not sell a kit. I have the schematics for both versions - why not just change all the related parts. This should still be less expensive than buying a new range. Any help would be sincerely appreciated On 2018-12-12 by John
Answer by (mod) - if the manufacturer is not offering an LPG to NG conversion kit
I agree that what you describe sounds reasonable but in my experience if the manufacturer is not offering a conversion kit they probably have a reason.
There may be some other feature or difference between those two models that's not obvious.
Watch out: Therefore as a matter of basic life safety I would not make such a change as you propose without first discussing it with the technical support at the manufacturer. If you decide to do that please let me know what they tell you.
Trying to convert a Kitchen Aid BarBQ grill from propane to natural gas. Handyman said installed kit and offices as required.
But grill will only get to 300 degrees he say not enough gas pressure from main line that was run only for this purpose. We are in Morgan Hill California is there less pressure here ?
Any help? OOn 2018-10-25 by Mike
Answer by (mod) -
Often the problem is the gas piping is too small in diameter to deliver adequate flow.
But let's put the question to bed by avoiding speculating and getting some objective data.
Have your technician actually measure the gas pressure to confirm that it is correct.
Then look at the piping distances and the required pipe diameters that will be specified by the manufacturer of your unit.
My Viking Cook top was just converted from LP to NG by a mechanical contractor. The 5 orifices were changed to NG as well as the regulator. I ordered parts from Viking.
My flame on low is very low and the highest settingis what used to be low when on LP.
The flame on all burners is good solid blue just very short flame. Is it a matter of adjustment or is this the way it is. The heat output is noticeibly less. and not acceptable On 2018-08-18 by ifoco
I suspect there is an adjustment remaining to be done.
In addition to changing the orifices from LP to NG, and the regulator from LP to NG, there may be an air shutter or mix adjustment at the burner or near the control itself - depending on stove design details.
You'd also want to check the actual pressures in the system, at least as is delivered to the appliance.
See GAS PRESSURES LP vs NATURAL GAS
If you don't have the manual for your Viking cooktop AND if you don't have the instructions for the LP-NG conversion kit from Viking see the manuals and conversion kit instructions and free manual downloads for Viking at
GAS COOKTOP MANUALS
Below I will paste in an excerpt from the LP to NG conversion kit instructions that show that you need to adjust the burner air shutter at the control.
Let me know if you have success or if you have further questions.

You'll want to review the advice at GAS APPLIANCE CONVERT LP-to-NATURAL GAS
You are right to want the proper-sized orifice and thread fitting to convert from LPG to natural gas. But the orifices are very specific to the appliance.
So even knowing the size marked on the present LPG orifice of 1.mm does not tell us what size to go to for natural gas (though the NG will indeed be bigger).
You should not try to buy a generic part. The orifice is sized also to the burner requirements.
You'll also need to change the regulator.
Take a look at the labels on your barbie - you should see a model number and serial number too.
Then contact Barbeques Galore
I'd like to see a photo of the BBQ and its labels and burner/control/orifice.
But ultimately you need to contact the vendor.
Here is a typical statement from a Barbie Installation Manual for a Ziegler and Brown barbeque sold by Barbeques Galore in Australia:
If your barbeque is manufactured to operate from universal LPG (Propane/Butane mix), it can be connected to LPG (Propane) without any alteration. If you wish to connect that barbeque to natural gas, it must be converted beforehand using the appropriate conversion kit available at your nearest Barbeques Galore store.
If your barbeque is manufactured to operate from Natural Gas and you wish to connect to LPG, it must be converted beforehand using the appropriate conversion kit available at your nearest Barbeques Galore store.
Either conversion must be done by a licensed gas fitter or an authorised gas appliance technician.
It is extremely dangerous to use the barbeque with the wrong type of gas. Fire or explosion may result. Conduct a leak test before use.
Barbeques which are connected to twin 45 kg LPG cylinders or to Natural Gas must be installed by a licensed gasfitter, in accordance with the requirements of AS 5601, and local gas authority requirements. -

Need to switch lp conversion back to ng On 2018-04-14 by stevefarber196151
by Mod - how to convert an appliance FROM Natural GasTO LP gas
At GAS APPLIANCE CONVERT LP-to-NATURAL GAS the steps would simply be reversed to convert from natural gas to LP. The procedure is exactly the same except that
- the gas regulator change direction is the opposite: you'd still be either flipping the same part upside down in the regulator, or turning an adjustment screw or knob but in this case from NG to LP
- the orifice sizes will be different: you still need to use the correct parts from the manufacturer. Shown above, a pair of orifices for a JennAir gas cooktop
The smaller #95 orifice was for LP gas and the larger #122 orifice is for natural gas for this specific appliance. Your appliance will require different parts.
- air shutter or air mix adjustments are required at the burners or controls on some appliances; the combustion air setting will be specified in the manual for your appliance
Please help me somebody. I bought gas stove (Kenmore) 2 years ago when my house was all propane (heat, hot water and cooking).
When delivering the stove, Sears used a conversion kit to hook up to the existing propane line to my new stove.
Now that piped in gas from utility company is on my street and I've hooked up with a new gas furnace, I'm getting mixed responses about converting back to the original gas stove I bought. Anybody know if it can or cannot be done? On 2018-02-11 by laxpuckmom
by (mod) - Watch out: you cannot use natural gas to feed a stove set up for LP gas without first converting the appliance
Watch out: you CAN NOT safely use the LP-fitted stove with piped in natural gas. Leave gas supply to that appliance OFF until it has been converted back to using natural gas.
Of course a stove that was converted from natural gas to propane can be re-converted back to the original fuel. Needed are several parts including proper gas orifices at burners and either an adjustment/conversion at the appliance regulator or a new regulator.
Does the natural gas and lp gas orafises have the same numbers on them ? On 2017-12-12 by Tim Gaffield
Answer by (mod) - NO
No, Tim, never for the same appliance. That is if you are switching between LPG and natural gas the new orifices will almost certainly have different numbees as the required orifice size will be different.
I have LP gas in stand alone tanks that feed into my range/oven
If the oven/range is convertible from electric to gas, would my conversion kit be a natural gas conversion kit or a LP gas conversion kitOn 2017-12-04 by Alice
by (mod) - gas ovens or ranges do not convert to "all electric"
Alice,
While some range tops and ovens can be converted between natural gas and LP gas fuel, I don't think we're going to find arrange or oven that converts between gas as a fuel and electricity as a fuel.
How can I find a qualified technician to do this? I've tried appliance repair shops, plumbers, propane suppliers, and handymen, and no one has ever done it before. On 2016-11-27 by Carla

When we purchased a gas dryer recently the company selling the appliance was happy to send out a technician to convert the appliance from natural gas (as shipped) to LP gas (as needed) but in fact they could not do the job as the dopey vendor didn't realize that one needs to have a conversion kit - different gas orifices are installed.
We ordered the kit online as the cheapskate company selling the expensive appliance did not, as they used-to, include a gas conversion kit.
So order the kit from the manufacturer, then hire a plumber or appliance repair person who's worked on gas appliances to make the conversion. It's not difficult.
Watch out: DO NOT use a handyman or someone inexpert and unfamiliar with the procedure as the result may be unsafe risking fire or explosion .\
Ask for advice from
- the manufacturer of the appliance
- the store where yo bought your gas dryer - who may have an installer crew trained in gas conversion
- the local gas company from whom you buy gas
- your building department
