Jim:

I can see long vertical splits/cracks/tears through multiple shingle courses tot he right of the lower shaded dormer.

That's not wind damage it's as you suspect - thermal splitting as we discuss at https://inspectapedia.com/roof/Asphalt_Shingle_Cracks_Splits.php CRACKS in FIBERGLASS SHINGLES

I would expect you to find similar damage in other roof areas and I'd expect an on-site up-close inspection to confirm the situation if all of the slopes have the same product of the same age.

Please tell me the roof's location: country and city,

the roof age

The shingle brand and specific product

You might get some argument about cause given that it looks as if the roof is un-vented, but even with a too-hot roof (some manufacturers void the warranty if it's not vented properly), this looks like a product failure not anything else.

The wind damage is principally a separate issue.

Sorry to say I suspect that insurance from your homeowners policy isn't going to cover a product defect - do let me know what you're told.

Here is an additional photo of the roof. You have to zoom in to see the splitting. Notice the broken ridge caps. I need your honest opinion of the damaged roof and what caused the splitting?
Thank you

Jim:

Of course you have my "honest" opinion - why on earth would someone give you a deliberately dishonest (as opposed to mistaken) opinion?

Your second photo shows that the roof looks a bit old - I see shingle cupping and what looks like lichens on the shaded slope.

Even if the manufacturer will warrant the shingles that'd cover at most the material cost, pro-rated by age.

So I look forward to reading the roof specifics as I asked in my prior comment.

Great website. Very informative. I have attached o drone photo of the roof. It appears to have thermal splitting and missing shingles from a wind storm.

Should the insurance company have the roof replaced? What is your opinion on the roof damage?

I had Owings Corning shingles installed in 4/17 I have stains from the shingles on the fascia. OC says these unsightly stains are normal and water soluble. They need a solvent to remove them. Please advise

Why is their not a class action law suit against these foofing shingle manufactures that sell shingles that turn black in months?

Disgusting that 1000s of people are buying shingles that have black streaks running down them and make your new house look like a giant TURD. Yet nothing is being done about it.

I just removed a 20 year roof with not 1 black spot on it. Why can these manufactures continue to get away with this? Houses all look like ... with this ugly black streaks.

I'm sorry you ended up with a color shingle you didn't want but what remains is a legal question. I'm a technical guy but not one equipped for legal debate. I imagine you'd find the cost of legal remedy exceeds the cost of the roof or the value an arbitrator would place on colour.

On 2015-11-10 by Drew T

Home Depot installed the wrong color Timberline shingles on my home.

When signing the contract, I spoke with the advisor and pointed to Oyser Gray in the tri-fold. It is a black shingle with specles of light blue and gray. He wrote down Shakewood and I did not take notice of the the specific color Name, only assuming that what he wrote down was what I selected.

I could not be there for the installation, and now I have a Brown shingled roof on a light blue/gray home. This is a very unusual situation, as the quality of the install is not currently being questioned, just that they wrote down the wrong color.

I offered to pay material as I feel I am also accountable, as I signed the contract, but they now want me to pick up over 75% of the re-installation costs as they said they did not do anything wrong. But neither did I. After scrutinizing every other portion of the contract

, I was not expecting that I needed to be an expert on roofing shingle color tile naming conventions as well. Any advise on how to proceed with HD? Their district sales manager will not budge on me paying the original roof installation ($9000) + ($5500) to redo it in the right color.

Frank:

There are acrylic paints that will bond to asphalt shingles but I agree with Carlton that stains such as those used on wood decks are not suitable and in fact may include solvents that are harmful to the roof.

Some elastomeric paint manufacturers do not recommend that paint type on asphalt shingles though the "roof can't breathe and won't dry out" argument needs more scholarly and expert citations than the speculation I've read elsewhere.

On 2015-09-21 by Carlton

The shingles have granules (small rocks) that are different colors/shades that gives them the appearance. A roof would not take a stain. As frank mentioned you can paint it but it will void any warranty that your roof had. I know there are many systems out there to paint it. I would call your local ABC Supply and ask what they keep in stock.

Use a roof paint formulated for and approved for coating asphalt roofing shingles.

i understand from experienced roofing companies that almost all residential roofing projects are via insurance claims. would this be a correct statement. what about non-insurance residential projects, are they just very few ?

Kate,

An answer to your question of 3-tab (with slots between tabs) or solid asphalt shingles is an OPINION, but if you consider that a full tab is continuous and thus provides more wear surface than cutout tabs, it ought to be a longer-lasting roof.

The shingle tab cutouts are there for aesthetic or cosmetic reasons and have nothing to do with wind damage to an asphalt shingle roof. Both solid and cutout shingles can fail to seal properly or can be nailed incorrectly, inviting wind damage.

On 2012-06-01 by Kate, May 31 , 2012

When installing new shingles which would you prefer the three tab or the new one piece fiberglass one ,

I have been hearing alot about the one piece, but it is not good, over the pass year the shingles have been blowing off and people are having to replace the shingles again .They have had roofers installing it but of course the warranty always has something to blame it on.

I think where it is a full tab shingle the wind get under it and where it is all one piece it all lifts up and the wind tears it off .Where as the three tab when the wind blows only the one flap tips up if wind happened to get under it . What are you thoughts ?

I am buying a house an I have notice in pictures that the shingle roof constructed with particle boards. The seamlines are visable and the shingles are raised the entire length. My realitor is trying to tell me it exspansion? This house is in north Georgia and I live in Florida and for over 45 years. I have never seen any roof that looks like this! I am having it inspected.I have had a family member physically look at it from the street and inside the attic he didn't notice anything. What do you think I am dealing with?

On 2011-10-03 by (mod) -

Pat,

Many community building departments take advantage of ANY building permit request to try to upgrade safety in the community by tacking on a CO detector requirement.

That decision may be based on oral policy, opinion of the code inspectors, or even local legislation. It doesn't have much to do with the roof itself.

On 2011-09-09 by Pat

Why does the building permit for a new asphalt roof say that carbon monoxide detectors need to be installed in the house?

On 2011-08-24 by (mod) -

Hill,

certainly both wind-damaged and wind-lifted asphalt shingles can be repaired.

If the shingles are cut and torn from wind damage those will need to be replaced individually.

If asphalt shingle tabs are lifted up because their self-sealing tabs did not hold, adding a small dab of roof mastic sealant below individual shingle tabs is a common repair step. Be careful not to blob on so much mastic that you make a tarry mess on the exposed shingle surface.
