Can the serial number determine my waer heater's age?

Can the serial number determine my water heater age? Is there a chart for that? On 2014-11-03 0 by Anonymous

Reply by (mod) -

Yes, by brand and model the serial number encodes the year or date of manufacture.

I mean to say that the date of manufacture usually encoded in the water heater serial number is not standard across all brands and models of water heater.

So we need to identify the water heater brand and model.

Once we have that information we use the

links to the water heater serial number age-decoding charts given in WATER HEATER AGE & MANUALS.

What's the age of my water heater model MIRE50S5DS12

How old is my hot water heater, It's model No. Is MIRE50S5DS12

This heater started leaking a few days ago. Was it made in 1980..? On 2016-09-11 by Anonymous

by (mod)- Here's what you need to figure the age of a water heater

Just looking at the model number won't answer a water heater age question, although often by looking at the history of a brand and model name we can see when the manufacturer started and stopped making that specific item.

To tet a more-accurate water heater age number, take a look at your water heater and find

  1. the brand name or company who made it and
  2. the water heater data tag where you'll find the water heater serial number
  3. Only then can you click directly to WATER HEATER DECODING by BRAND - de-coding guide for each water heater brand names + manuals, contact information, alphabetical list

How do I find about about water cylinder tank warranties?

I need to know about tank warranty (Oct 11, 2011) sharon

Reply:

The water cylinder tank warranty varies by the manufacturer and brand.

Sharon see

The warranty period and terms of your specific water tank depend on its model, age, and of course proper installation.

Typically you can find that information in the installation manual and papers for your unit, or if you don't have that information, you'd contact your heater's manufacturer and give them the model and serial number of your water heater.

What do we do to avoid risk of a leak & water damage before leaving home?

We are worried about our hydronic water heater. Our neighbors had severe water damage when their water heater had a major leak while cold water kept flowing into the heater. Their system is similar to ours.

We are going on vacation and wonder if we can turn off the cold water intake so that if the water tank develops a leak, at least we won't have a flood. Can we do this safely? (Feb 11, 2013) B Skiba

Moderator reply:

Sure, it's quite reasonable to simply turn off the cold water supply to your water heater before leaving your home unattended for some time.

In that case you're leaving the water heater full of water, so if it leaks the volume of water will be limited to just what's in the tank.

To do more you'd need to completely drain the water heater.

Details of how to do that are

at WATER HEATER DRAIN PROCEDURE

but

Watch out: if you drain any water heater but especially an electric water heater, never turn the heater back on before being sure it's filled with water. Otherwise the heater will be quickly destroyed and might also be unsafe.
