On 2023-05-07 by InspectApedia Editor (mod) - re-set the tankless water heater restored hot water flow
@Jeremy,
Thank you so much for taking the time to follow up with us and to describe the cure for your sudden loss of hot water. We'll be sure to keep this discussion with the article above as it will help other readers who lose all hot water flow, particularly from a tankless demand water heater.
Yes the old question of Joseph turned on is one that we should remember to check.
Curious about the diagnosis of your particular problem is that your original description said that there was a sudden and complete cease in hot water flow.
Distinguish between a flow of water in temperature of course meeting whether or not the water is hot.
Perhaps a bit unusual them with a tankless or instant water heater is turned off one of the effects would be that it also completely stops water flow.
This excerpt from the Navien NPE 240S manual mentions total loss of hot water flow, but one has to read *above* the table first to find the company's suggestion:
"If resetting the water heater and attempting the remedies suggested below ... "
which suggests that maybe a first thing Navien wants you to try is to re-set the water heater. The directions are a bit ambiguous on this point. You'll see that notice just above the tankless water heater troubleshooting chart given above on this page.
For other readers: if you don't already have the instruction manual for your Navien water heater, download the manual as a free PDF above on this page.

On 2023-05-07 by Jeremy - Navien NPE240 water heater flow restored: re-set the water heater
@InspectApedia Editor , I just wanted to follow up in case anyone else has this situation. Thank you for taking the time to give this answer.
Fortunately, my problem had an easy fix. I, for no other reason than it was there, hit the power button on the instant hit water heater.
I waited a few minutes, any when I turned it back on everything worked. The only way I know to fix computers, also worked for my hot water heater. I had assumed that if the issue was the heater, I would just have cold water.
I had no idea it would completely shut off the hot water leg in my house. It never showed an error code or anything. I hope this helps someone else, and I appreciate this site being the resource that it is.
On 2023-05-02 by InspectApedia Editor (mod) - what to check if you suddenly lose all hot water flow
@Jeremy,
Often when we have a sudden loss of all flow at hot water outlets while cold flow remains normal, the explanation is a blockage in either cold water in to the water heater or hot water out of the heater onwards to the building.
For example recently when I discussed this problem with an IAP reader, I suggested going to the point in the water supply piping where the main water supply (all cold) split off to continue hot to house and hot into and thence out of water heater.
At a pipe tee near the water heater he found a near total blockage.
A bit of covering of a water filter had broken loose, flowed through the piping and lodged at the first tee that was feeding the hot water system. Blockage removed, problem solved.
So we follow the water piping from that point in your system, if necessary cutting the piping to see if there is or is not flow. Particularly with the plastic pipes in your photos, cutting and repairing is quite easy using quick-to-install SharkBite fittings.
Follow the water pipes, cut, check for flow, patch, and let me know where the blockage was found.
On 2023-05-02 by Jeremy - Our hot water just suddenly stopped flowing.
Our hot water just suddenly stopped flowing. Our cold water is working normally. There wasn’t a slow diminishing hot water flow. It went from normal to nothing without us touching anything that could have affected it. It hasn’t been cold, so it’s not frozen pipes. We don’t seem to have a very high mineral content in our water.
At least, in the 15 years I’ve lived here I haven’t noticed significant mineral deposits on anything.
We have a Navien (model NPE-240-S) that we have never had any problems with.
I have closed and reopened each of the 3 ball valves entering or exiting the heater, even though they hadn’t been adjusted in years and shouldn’t have been an issue.
The natural gas and power to it haven’t been interrupted. I’m at a loss and don’t have a clue how to begin.

at WATER HEATERS for HOME HEATING USE?
George,
Above on this page we give the general considerations in deciding if a given water heater can be used for building heating systems including a radiant heat floor system.
Do you mean Navien NPE-S 240 ? I think so.
And of course check the Navien NPE-S 240 INSTALLATION AND OPERATION MANUAL [PDF] available from Navien or here at InspectApedia.com at
Navien NPE CONTRACTOR BROCHURE [PDF]
Watch out: be sure that the Navian heater you are going to use for your radiant heat flooring is in fact the manufacturer's model that is approved for that application: the Navian Commercial or "Combi" model, where the company says
Combi refers to a combination potable water and space heating application.
Water heaters cannot be used in space heating only applications.
The following excerpt pertaining to using a Navien water heater for space heating is from Navien's Contractor Brochure
For combination space heating and domestic hot water An innovative use for the NPE-A’s integrated circulator, designed for both retrofit and new construction residential applications.
Navien’s H2Air™ Kit* consists of an add-on controller that allows for space heating and DHW system integration between NPE-A Series tankless water heater models and a hydronic air handler.
* Compatible with NPE-A series units produced on or after May 31, 2014.
Watch out: Check you water heater's data plate to confirm that your model can be used as you ask. An example from Navien's IO manual is shown just below.
For other tankless or any other water heater product, In my OPINION I'd be reluctant to ask a water heater to do double duty as providing both domestic hot water (washing and bathing) and building heating.
The manufacturer, in this case Navien, are the people to ask.

On 2019-07-27 by (mod) - Vent clearance distances for Navien condensing water heaters CH series
Anon:
The manual for your Navien CH180 Tankless water heater is available from the company at the link I gave earlier, or also here at InspectApedia
at NAVIEN WATER HEATER AGE & MANUALS
Navien notes that all of its clearance requriements are in accordance with ANSI Z21.10.3 and the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223.1 / NFPA 54 and CGA B149.1 National Gas and Propane Installation Code. See the illustration here and the table below.
The vent clearance distances for the heater are given on p. 35 in the manual; I'll post two clips here that give distances.

Thanks for the added detail - let's both see what we can find on this Navien model.
The "T Love" is NOT a Navien water heater model name, part number nor term, it's a name associated with an excellent plumbing information website by Terry Love.
Your Water Heaterr models include a Navien CH 180 Gas Fired Water Heater and a Navien CH 210 Gas Fired Water Heater
If you don't have the IO and Users Manuals for your Navien CH water heater, check the links above on this page where you can download those guides as a PDF file.

I didn't realize auto type somehow changed love to loves. :) These are 2013 Navien T love Ch 180's on left and right. The middle is a 2013 Navien T love CH 210.
On 2019-06-21 by (mod) - Safety of Navien CH water heater vents that may be snow-covered
A good place to start is with the installation instructions from the manufacturer.
Navien Heater Company has a website with plenty of resources and product instruction downloads https://www.navieninc.com/ - you'll need your specific product type, name, model number, and on occasion, serial number.

Navien says the heater vent has to be at least 7" above ground, but where there is snow cover you need to be above the top of the maximum anticipated snow depth OR the vent exits need to be protected from being covered by snow by an external means.
Watch out: any direct vent heating appliance whose air intake or exhaust can be blocked by snow or anything else is potentially unsafe and risks fatal carbon monoxide poisoning of building occupants.

Here is the direct vent systems that the Kalamazoo, MI city is finding no problem with despite smelling the exhaust inside at times. Especially in winter when these were all but buried.
We can get up to 2 ft snow here at times. They are saying the clearances are accurate, but we are finding they are not. These 3 systems are Navien T loves. 2 are CH 180s and the middle is a CH 210.
All are common vented intake from a window well you will see in pictures(bottom left).
Bushes may be the problem as well. Furthermore the bottom of the vent exhausts come out of the building at ground level behind the bushes.
Being this does not fit the direct venting specifications what kind of setup would this be classified?
What are your thoughts as we seem to be hitting road blocks getting the city to see there is a problem here.
