In 1928 the W&J Sloane Company was re-named Sloane Blabon Co, then according to some sources Sloane Blabon became the present-day Congoleum Nairn Co. that became the modern company Congoleum.

Really? This point needs clarification: a reading of Congoleum's history tells a different story. Congleum was founded unde that name in 1886.

The founder's son Sir Michael Baker Nairn, chairman of Michael nairn CO., Ltd. of Kirkaldy, Scotland, founded the Nairn Linoleum Co. in 1886.

By the 1930s Sloane Blabon, described as "a large manufacturer of linoleum", was a subsiddiary of CertainTeed Products, a building products manufacturer.

In March 1937 The New York Times reported:

Wallace Groves, chairman of the Phoenix Securities Corporation and the Certain-Teed Products Corporation, has been elected chairman of the board of directors of the SloaneBlabon Corporation, a subsidiary of Certain-Teed Products and a large manufacturer of linoleum. - The New York Times 16 March 1936

In 1953 Congoleum Nairn purchased Sloane-Blabon Corporation, by then a long-establilshed floor covering manufacturer, for $10.3 million.

On 2021-05-02 by (mod) - does this Sloane Linoleum rug contains asbestos?

1950s Sloane Linoleum "Cowboy" rug (C) InspectApededia.com Gretchen@Gretchen,

As it's dated as having been manufactured in the 1950s with an asphalt-backer, this Sloane linoleum rug might indeed contain asbestos.

Considering that where it's listed you've valued this Sloane linoleum floor covering at $2,500, it might be worth collecting a careful sample of the backer to have that tested for asbestos - cost about $100.

You could still advertise it for sale with an appropriate caveat.

In my OPINION there is very low chance of a detectable asbestos hazard from non-friable material unless it is mechanically damaged, for example by chopping, cutting, sanding

Wondering if you think this Sloan Linoleum rug contains asbestos? It was part of my uncle's estate and I have it listed on Etsy. Someone reached out to me and warned me that it might contain asbestos. Certainly don't want to sell it if it does.

That makes sense to me;

On 2020-09-21 by Anonymous

I wanted to let you know that I am not going to go the testing route. I found that I can simply treat it as confirmed asbestos, double wrap/seal in 6mil plastic and follow the disposal protocols.
Thanks for your help!

Rolling up ought to be harmless

On 2020-09-20 by Anonymous

Thank you for your quick reply. Yes, there is a layer of black, and then the backside is (or was) red. We can roll it without much trouble, but would be too large for our hazardous waste site to accept. I will make some decisions this week.
Thanks again!

Sloane

If, as I think is the case, your Sloane linoleum rug is backed by black asphalt felt then there is a reasonable chance that it contains asbestos.

That's not a reason to panic but it is a reason to avoid creating dust by grinding, chopping, sawing, etc. the material.

If you do decide to have a sample tested, do let us know the test result, and be sure that your test includes the backer layer, not just the design-face of the linoleum.

Hello! We have had a linoleum rug in the unfinished basement of our house since we bought it 20 years ago. It's time to remove it. It has some wear and damage in a couple of spots. After looking online, I found it in a Sloane catalog from 1962.

I can not find any information without cutting a sample to have tested this coming week. Any idea of Sloane rugs had asbestos? Thanks. Here is the page from the catalog:
