On 2018-06-14 by (mod) - asbestos wrap on buried water pipes

Bob

That's certainly possible, as an asbestos-tape pipe wrap might have been used on an underground pipe to protect it from corrosion or condensation.

I'd like to see some sharp photos of the pipe exterior as well as an end-cut showing the pipe and insulation in cross section. That would let me say more. Use the Add Image button next to the Comment button.

Disposal of possible or assumed asbestos material depends on regulations that vary by country and city, discussed at ASBESTOS DISPOSAL REGULATIONS https://inspectapedia.com/hazmat/Asbestos_Disposal_Rules.php

I obtained a metal water pipe about 20 ft long that is about 50 years old that was under a swimming pool cement deck.

The pipe, about an inch diameter, has a white coating all over it and in one location has a clear plastic wrap around the pipe.

Do you think this white material is asbestos? Was this common years ago to preserve pipes? If it is asbestos coating, how do I dispose of it? Thank you!

I'm researching your question

Hi, I came across an article that mention asbestos in furniture. Do you know anything about it and if so want did it look like? Thanks.

On 2018-04-27 by (mod) -

Mike,

Thank you for the interesting question I'll research it further. I have certainly read that there were a number of products that mixed asbestos with mud and possibly diatomaceous earth and filtering applications but not specifically for oil filtering. Let's both see what we can find using Google Scholar.

Was Diatomaceous Earth and asbestos used to filter oil and other contaminants from NAVY propulsion system? The Asbestos may have been mixed with Diatomaceous Earth, locally aboard ship, on World War II error ships. In particular Steam reciprocating Engines were the Steam Header was also used to return steam condensate, filtered by the Diatomaceous Earth and asbestos mixture before it was returned to the Steam Boiler.

I worked at a Ziebart francise from 1972 till 1997 I am concerned about the undercoating material that was in use at that time it came in yellow barrel possibly not of ziebarts own manufacture. They sold it It wasn't a rustproofing product, It was a sound deadener use product. I called the Co. they told me they don't have that information. I believe they have to have records of all products they have sold and used over the years. I don t want to go through the legal way if not needed! Any information you can provide would be helpful.

I don't know, Lucy. As you've removed the material it'd also be smart to damp wipe and HEPA vac the remains of the chair and work area.

Was asbestos used in the cushion padding part of kitchen tables? I got a vintage chair and when I tried to reupholster it, I took out the padding and noticed it kind of looked like asbestos so I immediately put it in a bag and took outside.

You might want to look at closing off the chimney at its top and anywhere else that water might leak in - leaks into a closed-off framed-around abandoned chimney might later be annoying.

On 2016-08-15 by Mike

Thank you for your prompt response. I have subsequently decided that I am going to frame around this chimney, instead of exposing the brick as a feature, so the chimney will remain unused and now inaccessible behind a wall. Thank you so much, however!

Mike,

Without a lab test we don't know just what you're handling; it would be safest to handle it as if it contained asbestos (wet work, no dust, no vacuuming except HEPA-rated vacuum cleaner, etc). If you face a large cost then it may be worth the $50. to have a certified asbestos test lab test a sample.

Hello - I am building a smal room in my basement which incorporates the old unused chimney stack which used to service the kitchen above many decades ago. I was cleaning out the box at bottom when I noticed this soft, white dry pasty material, used almost like a putty filler, smeared across some of the joints. I began to removed it fairly easily with a putty knife when I realized it may be an asbestos caulk of some sort. Is it likely containing asbestos, and if so, is it safe to continue?

Brian,

Asbestos was used in some clay and tile products, I can't say a thing about your unknown grill. You can use the page bottom CONTACT link to send me a photo or two if you like.

Clay is not a friable material; even if it contains asbestos, unless it's being ground, chopped, sanded, broken -up, I doubt that it can produce a measurable level of airborne clay or clay-constituent particles.

An old (?age) smoker/grill that looks as if its made from clay, but seems less dense, like could be compressed fabric. Its brick colored, bulky, with large cover on top. Strange looking object but works. Could this be made w/asbestos, and if so, is it a risk?
