Photos & comments help identify early patterns, colors, brands of asphalt asbestos or vinyl asbestos flooring.

Probably not if your floor tiles are made in the US. You didn't give me a country or city.

After you have taken a look at that article I would welcome any further questions

Glazed Craft Floor Tiles from 1984 do they contain aspestus?
On 2018-05-02 by (mod) - do you think these old 9x9" floor tiles contain asbestos?
The flooring in youri photo - in poor condition - looks like old vinyl asbestos floor tiles to me. What is the building age?
Asbestos is safe and legal to remain in homes or public buildings as long as the asbestos materials are in good condition and the asbestos can not be released into the air.
If you do not know the brand name of your flooring you can take a quick look at example photos of the product line of each manufacturer given
in the list of photo guides found at CONTINUE READING below.

These tiles are in my garage. As you can see they are NOT in good shape. They are 9" x 9". What do you think? Asbestos?
On 2018-04-26 by (mod) - how can I be sure that flooring is safe to remove and does not contain asbestos
You'd need to either know that the flooring was made after the mid 1980's or you would have a flooring sample tested.
In the page top menu or links find our EXPERTS DIRECTORY and therein ASBESTOS TESTING LAB LIST for some suggestions

The main part of my house was built in '47 with pine flooring. This was covered up with 12x12 yellow block pattern floor tile that we are tearing out. I would say 70's style. How can I be sure it's ok to remove?
On 2018-04-04 by (mod) - popular flooring patterns made after the 1980's may look like older asbestos-containing floor materials
Certainly yes. Many popular tile patterns were produced without Asbestos and look just like the earlier asbestos containing ones.

I have a hose built in 1981 and have tile in my back den which was just discovered and it looks like a asbestos tile made from Armstrong from 1968.
Could they have made a tile that is similar to the asbestos tile but not have asbestos? Why would a tile from 1968 be in a house that was built in 1981.

I don't know this floor pattern, Harjap, but considering the age of the home, it would be prudent to treat it as Presumed Asbestos Containing Material or "PACM"
Or have a sample tested: see ASBESTOS TESTING LAB LIST

This [photo below] is the tile on top of the other one I just posted in my aladdin kit home. Thanks for your help!
This isn't a tile but a big sheet of material [photo below]. Home was built in 1959 and is an aladdin kit home.
There is another tile glued on top of this material in parts of the kitchen that I will post next. I really appreciate the help and resources you provide!
Your cork pattern vinyl- floor tile is similar to many produced by Armstrong, Sears, Wards, and other manufacturers before 1980.
It would be prudent to treat it as Presumed Asbestos Containing Material or "PACM"

Just pulled up some tile I’m our dining room that was covered by laminate. House was built in 1960. Tile size is 9x9.
On 2018-02-19 by (mod) - newer than 1986 not likely to contain asbestos
If that floor is in the US, and newer than 1986 , it's not likely to contain asbestos
On 2018-02-18 by Donita
Can anyone tell me anything about this? I found it under the laminate flooring we just removed. Its 12x12, very thin and that cream colorball thebway through.
On 2018-02-06 by (mod) - If you know the age of the flooring that would be most helpful.
I have seen asbestos containing sheet flooring in similar patterns but not this exact one. If you know the age of the flooring that would be most helpful.

Do we have any information about the probable floor age? Building age?
The floor looks like a 1960's era vinyl asbestos floor tile. Notice that cork pattern in the darker tan tiles.
it'd be prudent to treat this flooring as Presumed Asbestos Containing Material or "PACM"

Any ideas on this floor tile? It's very thin and some are coming loose...
Your green and tan flecked floor tile is similar to many produced by Armstrong, Sears, Wards, and other manufacturers before 1980.
If you know that the flooring was made or installed before the early 1980's it'd be prudent to treat it as Presumed Asbestos Containing Material or "PACM"

Hi. I was wondering what you could tell me about this floor tile and ceiling tile. Anything your recognize? Trying to get ahold of the previous owner of the house but no luck so far. Thank you for your help.
On 2018-01-09 by (mod) - possible asbestos in jute-backed or canvas-backed sheet flooring?
That looks like a Congoleum-like jute-backed sheet flooring - a successor to the original Linoleum or perhaps even true linoleum.
I cannot say for certain without a lab test but I suspect this is not an asbestos-containing floor covering.
See these two articles - the second, Dominon or DOMCO, later Tarkett, was the largest Canadian flooring company

Hello, I found this under several other layers in our 1917 Toronto bathroom. It must have been so beautiful when new. Does this contain asbestos?
Thank you
Michigan Dude: I don't recognize your flooring pattern, and am confident it's not one we've indexed here. If you know that the flooring was made or installed before the early 1980's it'd be prudent to treat it as presumed to contain asbestos.

This is 1 by 12 tile, does it contain asbestos?
On 2018-01-06 by (mod) - treat 1970's floor as PACM or have it tested
Linda,
That is not a flooring pattern that I can identify. If you think it was installed before the early 1980's you would be prudent to treat it as presumed to contain asbestos. Otherwise that's not necessary.

This tile is in two rooms and an entryway. It’s not self adhesive and as you can see, it’s starting to come up. The house was built in the 70’s but I think these were put in later mostly because I have extra tiles. Unfortunately, there’s no information on the back of the tile. Thoughts on asbestos?
On 2017-12-30 by (mod) -
Yes.1970s
Your floor looks a lot like patterns we found in the DOMINION & Other CANADIAN FLOORING ASBESTOS catalog - see that article for flooring photos as well as a link to the complete catalog. If your home is in Canada that probability increases.
While some "linoleum" and other sheet vinyl flooring products don't contain asbestos, when we see that an asphalt-impregnated paper "felt" backer is used on flooring we warn you that some felt products including flooring backer contained asbestos.

Should I be concerned?
On 2017-12-28 by (mod) - Could these tile vinyl floors have asbestos?
Veronica:
Yes it's certainly possible if the flooring also went in at that time.
To focus on the floor tiles themselves, we cropped your original image - the picture you sent seems to be a stock or magazine photo, not an actual photograph of your own home's flooring.
Tara:
I don't recognize the exact pattern of your floor tiles. In a 1939 home in most countries, unless you know the age of the flooring is post mid 1980's it would be prudent to treat the floor as presumed to contain asbestos.
Asbestos is safe and legal to leave in place when it is not friable, damaged, or creating a dusty mess.
Friable and nonfriable asbestos are defined

On 2017-12-01 by (mod) - Armstrong flooring line from the 1970s
Cilla,
That pattern looks much like some of the Armstrong line from the 1970s
If the floor is from before the early 1980s it would be prudent to treat it as containing asbestos.

Probably so, but if you didn't grind them up to make dust you're probably ok.

In the mid 60s my dad would bring home floor tile samples about 2 inches by 3 inches. We would carve into them to make prints with which was popular back then, I now wonder if they were asbestos
