What type of resin is used in a Northstar NSC29UD?

InspectApedia Publisher (mod) · Feb 3, 2025

@Carlos,

I'll double check but I'm almost certain that the resin described at

WATER SOFTENER RESIN REPLACEMENT inspectapedia.com/plumbing/Water_Softener_Resin_Replacement.php

would be fine.

I have had to break up the salt at the bottom of the softener, and I notice that there is no water present. Should I add some water to the softener?

InspectApedia Publisher (mod) · Mar 26, 2024

@Gordon,

You should not ever have to add water manually into the water softener brine tank. The softener should send water into the tank under control of its control head/valve.

SO: check that the brine tank level float assembly is not stuck - it may need to be freed or cleaned or even replaced.

Then run the softener through a manual regneration cycle and watch to see that water enters the brine tank.

IF no water enters the brine tank and you've done what you can to free the float, I think it's time to call a softener repair technician.

Do keep me posted.

Is there a filter to change on the water softener?

InspectApedia DF (mod) · Mar 5, 2024

@Judy,

No, not typically, although there may be a filter-screen that might need cleaning. Let us know the brand and model of your water softener and we can look at the owner's manual for specifics on needed maintenance.

MY DISHES HA E GIME OR SALT ON THEM AFTER BEING WASHED

InspectApedia (Editor) (mod) · Nov 20, 2022

@William kumanchik,

Provided that you are sure that the water softener has been in-use, has salt, has been running regeneration cycles, then white deposits on dishes can happen if the water softener salt dose is too high or if the softener and brine tank need to be cleaned.

The other problem could be that the softener isn't working and you're seeing mineral deposits on dishes.

Can you reset the regeneration cycle frequency on a North Star water softner

Inspectapedia Com Moderator (mod) · May 7, 2022

@Mick,

We don't know the model of your North Star water softener but almost certainly yes, you could reset this feature.

Above on this page, as an example, there is a link to one model's manual and in there, on page 11, it gives the instructions for setting the regeneration time.

Be sure to check your owner's manual or if you don't have it, let us know what model you have and we can try to help further.
