Phoenix composting toilet bulking mix | see note at right | The best bulking material is dry planer shavings from a white softwood Do not use shavings from decay resistant woods such as cedar or redwood: this material will reduce the composting rate. The bulking agent must have a physical structure that resists compaction so that air voids will remain open. Do not use large wood chips, wood waste from treated lumber, or materials that form a mat, such as long grass or leaves. Dry pine shavings often are sold as bales of animal bedding. |

On 2024-05-08 by Capalino - alternative suppliers for Envirolet starter mix
Did anyone have any success in alternate products for their Envirolet no water units last year? We used tissue paper under a makeshift starter mix and then Sunmar daily mix. When we went to clean out the unit this spring it was not the dry compost we normally get. It would seem that the tissue paper did not dissolve effectively and hence the whole composting process did not work. Any suggestion would be most appreciated.

@Capalino,
Quite a few other companies sell starters for composting toilets, none that I've read were an exact match for Envirolet.
I'd look at
SunMar Composting Toilet Starter Mix: sold as "Sure Blue" and "Sure Green" by quite a few third party vendors, even Amazon and Walmart, and at some Home Depot stores!
Here's a direct link to one of the Composting Toilet Starter Mix Products at SunMar

Trevino and Biolet also offer starter mixes for composting toilet systems.
On 2023-08-31 by Capalino - trouble finding alternative suppliers for Envirolet toilets
We too are having difficulty finding alternative supplies for our Envirolet no water toilet. Has anyone found a good daily mix to use.
We have been using one from another toilet supplier but it is not working well for us. The system is too wet and there is an odor that I dont seem to be able to rectify. We have used the Envirolet system successfully for almost 20 years. Not being able to get substitute supplies is very frustrating.
Thank you

@Capalino,
It is indeed frustrating. At this point the best bet may be to identify as accurately as you can the formula for the original media that was working and to then see if you can duplicate it.Other suggestions are on this page.
On 2023-07-05 by Frank - no success trying to contact Envirolet - other toilet bowl liners sources for waterless toilets:
Does anyone know where to get the Envirolet paper mat OR what could be used in its place. Thanks in advance for any help
i have tried all the numbers - but they are all disconnected . I will send an email - but not sure if they will respond - it appears they are out of business.
On 2023-07-05 by InspectApedia Publisher (mod)
@Frank, I suspected that.
Let's (that really means you) write up an accurate description of the dimensions of the items you need and we can probably find a substitute.
The envirolet used a paper liner in its waste reservoir. You might be able to use the bowl liners that we buy for our Cinderella toilet, described & sourcedat INCINERATOR TOILET SYSTEMS https://inspectapedia.com/septic/Incinerating_Toilet_Guide.php
If you are just referring to toilet paper you can use any store-bought toilet paper. Experts prefer recycled paper but any will be ok.

Can you use normal toilet paper?
Yes, most definitely. Although we recommend using recycled toilet paper, or even better, ‘Who gives a crap’ toilet paper. It’s really important to not put anything that will harm all the bacteria and microbes that are in your composting pile into your composting toilet.Wet wipes that use chemicals will not only not break down, they will also do harm to all the good critters in your composting pile that work hard at breaking down human waste into a usable top-soil like humus for you to use on your gardens.
What can you put in them?
Really, the only thing you should be putting into a composting toilet is number ones, number twos, toilet paper, bulking agent and enzyme based cleaners. It’s really important not to use harsh, chemical based cleaners as this will kill all the good bacteria in your composting pile.
How do you clean a composting toilet?
The best and easiest way to clean your composting toilet is to use an enzyme based cleaner made from natural products like Nature Flush Enzymes. Not only will this product help clean your composting toilet so it sparkles and shines, it will give all the bacteria, microbes and fungi in your pile some extra nourishment.At ENVIROLET https://inspectapedia.com/septic/Composting_Toilets.php#Envirolet
I've added other contact numbers and websitesContinuing: most of the paper toilet bowl liners used in incinerating toilets are waterproof or at least water resistant good for a day or so, perhaps more.
Similar products besides the Cinderella toilet bowl liner are sold by Airhead, Hinlo, Carebag, and Lundberg and perhaps others.Sancor Industries says that they continue to sell Envirolet toilets and supplies including the paper mat about which you asked.
The company's linked-in page says: [sic]

Sancor continues to manufacture in North America and offers the longest warranty in the composting toilet industry.

Your web site has been very useful indeed but we remain uncertain about our choice. Are you aware of a composting toilet that uses water and standard house electricity for which there are no consumables necessary? if not is there a way of comparing the on-going costs of additives for these toilets? Thanks very much - A.D. - Canada
Moderator Reply: List of Composting Toilet Supplies, Costs, Features, Functions
I am not aware of any composting toilet design for which the manufacturer recommends no consumables whatsoever. The minimum consumable required is a bulking material. Sun-Mar and some others also offer enzymes, deodorants, and compost activators that may be optional.
Quoting from the Phoenix Composting Toilet System Instructions for Operation and Maintenance, and noting that opinions vary among manufacturers about the best and most easily biodegraded bulking material to use in a composting toilet:
Bulking material is necessary to improve drainage and aeration, and to provide extra carbon, thus creating conditions essential for composting. The right amount of bulking material gives the compost pile a crumbly, porous texture.
An inadequate amount results in a wet, pudding-like texture, puddling liquid, and anaerobic conditions that generate an unpleasant odor. [1][2]
"Anaerobic conditions" means more than just an unpleasant odor. It also means the system will lack aerobic bacterial action and biodegradation will not proceed properly nor adequately.
Keep in mind that the operating cost for a composting toilet depends not only on the cost of supplies but on the type of toilet selected (non-electric vs. electric, for example) and upon the level of usage and perhaps maintenance. That said, below we have begun a table of composting & waterless & low-water toilet system supplies, uses, & costs.
