These curriculae and building defect lists are based on smilar curriculum documents first prepared by Joe Scaduto, an ASHI member who prepared course material for Northeastern University's Building Inspection Certificate program in 1988, subsequently by DF, InspectApedia's editor, for New York University ca 1988 and later, with others, recommended to ASHI, the American Society of Home Inspectors. ASHI did not adopt this material though currently that association as well as others offer extensive HOME INSPECTOR EDUCATION material.
The curriculum and lists of defects are informed by additional analysis of the process of home inspection that was developed beginning Calgary, AB for Canadian and U.S. home inspector education and certification examinations in 1997. What happens if you disconnect the thermostat wires at the heater and jump the two TT terminals?On 2019-10-16 by Mike
Working on a 90,000 but googman gas heater. Thermastate is on heat, but furnace will not come on. Board has steady light, all limits are closed, even changed board out just in case, nothing. Have not checked the thermstate yet! Any thoughts?

Will a gas powered wall-mount furnace pass inspection without identification plates? Blower fan? Externally located thermostat?

Hello, I bought an holder home (1945) last year. There was at one point an oil furnace, however now it is gas-fired furnace. I suspect that the original ductwork is hooked up to the currentl furnace. We had the ducts cleaned out when we moved in (via a truck mounted system, and nothing was sprayed into the ducts). They had never been cleaned (in over 60 years).
There is still a small amount of building material, debris and dirt in the ductwork where the men simply could't get deep enough into the vents, but they are MUCH cleaner. The company said it was the 2nd worst home they'd ever seen.
We noticed an oil smell coming from the supply vents when we tuned the furnace on last winter. We run air purifiers in the home. I also keep filters in every vent, and have to change the main furnace filter once a month.
Over the summer, when the windows were open, I would occasionally notice a petroleum/oil like smell draft through part of the main floor, but could not pinpoint it. Last night, as I was preparing to turn on the furnace for the winter, I discovered that the smell was actually coming from the return air duct (as well as the supply ducts), too.
This is surprising because I did not notice it from this duct last winter. So either I am becoming more sensitive, or the "smells" of the previous owner are going away and we are noticing other smells now. Is it possible that oil contamination can be in the ducts – I am surprised that the return would also smell so bad? Other than replacing the duct work, is there anything else that we can do? Thank you so much for your assistance. I appreciate the information on this site so much.
