  As noted in the Lofgren family civil suit, parents Parker and Caroline Lofgren, along with their adorable children, Owen, ten, and Sophie, eight, traveled to Aspen to spend Thanksgiving weekend at a facility called The Lodge.
  
  That evening, the lawsuit states, snow began falling on their rental home. As snow accumulated on the roof, a sensor triggered a gas-fired boiler called the "Munchkin" to melt it. But something went terribly wrong. At five p.m. on November 28, 2008, family friends discovered the Lofgrens' bodies -- and they were in fearful condition, according to the lawsuit:
  
  The decedents Parker and Caroline Lofgren were found in their nightclothes on the bed. Caroline had hemorrhaged from her mouth or nose. Owen was found on the floor by his father beside a nightstand. Sophie was found on the floor by her mother with her face bloodied. Blood was also found on the bedding of one of the bunk beds in the children's guest suite.
  
  It was later confirmed that carbon monoxide poisoning killed the Lofgrens, with evidence pointing to the Munchkin boiler.
  
  The suit alleges that the causes of the poisoning included, but were not limited to, a disconnected exhaust vent, a disconnected fresh air intake vent, a defectively designed boiler, an improperly installed HVAC system and the absence of a carbon monoxide detector.
  
  The document argues that several of these factors "were open and obvious violations of Pitkin County Code."
  
  Really? readers take note that a disconnected exhaust flue vent connector alone would be likely to vent combustion products into the occupied space, and a disconnected fresh air intake could, if the result was inadequate combustion air, cause production of carbon monoxide in a gas boiler. Niether of those defects would, in our opinion, need to be specific problems unique to a particular heating boiler brand or model.
  
  The tragic deaths reported by several sources including Roberts should be taken as a warning to assure that heating equipment is properly installed and that there are properly-located, tested, working carbon monoxide detectors in the building.

Munchkin boiler age encoded in the serial number as follows:

1. HVAC equipment using a Honeywel controller, built before 2002-11-02 (using the Pre-925-controller): identified by
   
   - A serial number without a "version number" suffix AND
   
   - 80M R1 - A model number with an R1 suffix: built between 2002/11/02 and 2006-12-19
   
   - 80M ASME R2 - A model number with an R2 suffix: Built after 2006-12-20
2. Wall-Mounted HVAC units & Split Systems (indoor unit):
   
   - Manufacture date is printed on the same sticker as the serial number. Look inside the unit's front cover.

Question: Munchkin T50 boiler with pex tubing - do I need a mixer valve?

Im running a Munchkin t50 boiler with 1800 feet 1/2" Pex tubing in a slab.

Do I need to have a mixing valve or should I use a closely separated tees setup?

Reply:

Mike am not expert on radiant heat slab systems that do not use a mixing valve to keep the water temperature at the required level and to avoid overheating. However there are some modern hydronic heating boilers that include sophisticated controls to adjust boiler temperature to work with radiant floor heating. Those systems may omit a separate mixing valve.

Have you asked a heating design engineer for help with your system to be sure it will meet its requirements?

In any event a water feed valve as discussed in the article above is completely separate from the mixing valve used to maintain radiant heat system temperature.
