How old is my heat pump - no data tag serial number?
My. Serial number is gone on my heat pump so now how do I no how old it is? On 2019-07-17 by Erika
Tips by (mod) - When the data tag is lost, damaged, not readable
Erika
Great question.
When the data tag is lost and we want to know the age on a heat pump we have a few options:
1. how old is the building - that sets a limit on the heat pump age
2. are there any service records for the unit? If there are just one or two service or installing companies where you live you can also give them a call to see if they installed the unit
3. is there an installation manual left with the unit - often there's an installation date written there
4. did anyone pen an install date inside the cover
5. Identify the brand, take photos, ask the manufacturer for a clue - e.g. there may be a serial number on the compressor motor or other major parts

I can see why you're asking: going to a U.S. or Indian Electrolux website and looking at their "CONTACT ELECTROLUX" information leaves you with all of the contact details I show between the two dashed lines below:
------
------
That's right, Nothing. You might dig deeper and find a U.S. telephone number or you can fill in a question form at http://www.electroluxappliances.com/
The manufacture date is typcially coded into the serial number. I see that "97" at the end of the S/N that might be a year-clue.
As manufacturers do not enjoy following an industry-wide age encoding standard, each company may use different encoding in the serial number - we give some sources of decoder guides in the article above.
As I'm traveling and don't have my Carson Dunlop data tag decoder book in my backpack, I'm left having to guess.
More speculatively for Electrolux you could guess and decide if the guess is reasonable week 16 of 1997, and week 24 of 2007.
How do I find the age of an air conditioner?
where can I find age, life expectancy, etc if I want to put in the model and serial number of hvac systems On 2016-06-20 by jimby (mod)

You'll see examples in the article AGE of AIR CONDITIONERS & HEAT PUMPS : the age is usually encoded or sometimes even given clearly in the serial number of the HVAC component. Check the data tag. You'll see that different manufacturers use differing systems such as
straightforward encoding: 1995010312345 1995 May 03 12345
encoding by serial day of the year such as YYYYnnn or just YYnnn
encoding by letter codes such as A=1995

by (mod) York A/C unit model numbers are in this format:
York A/C unit model numbers are in this format:
XXX 12 C-3
XXX 12 C-3A
XXXX Y123ZZ
where the first two numeric digits are Mbtuh
or A1BC2345678
where
A = product type, e.g. E = heat pump outdoor unit
1 = generation number
BC = product identifier, e.g. UF = upflow flattop
234 = cooling capacity in BTUH or CFM, e.g. 012 = 12,000 BTUH, or D06 = 600 CFM direct drive
5 = refrigerant connection type, e.g. A = quick connect
67 = voltage if present, e.g. 06 = 208/230-1-60
The Carson Dunlop Technical Reference Guide we cite at AGE of AIR CONDITIONERS & HEAT PUMPS gives exact details for all of the encoding characters, but this will show you the usual model number formats

If you don't have the manual and don't have a data tag that gives the refrigerant type and charge volume then your best bet to get exactly the correct data is to give Goodman Air Conditioning a call directly.
From within the United States and Canada, you can contact Goodman at 1-877-254-4729

HOW CAN I GET ONE OF THESE ? Carson Dunlop provides a manual that decodes more of that data so that you can know the age of the compressor or air handler. That is, the date of its manufacture, (Jan 24, 2014) Jill Holstein
I am interested in knowing if the Carson Dunlop Technical Reference Guide covers Commercial Carrier AHU's RTU's and FCU's.
Also does it include refrigerant type and capacities for each unit. If not is there a site that does have the information. I am working for a college and am in need of this type of information if available. I am also interested in report writing. On 2012-09-18 by Rocky Germani

Jill contact information for Carson Dunlop Associates data tag decoding book is given in the article AGE of AIR CONDITIONERS & HEAT PUMPS as well as at the Citations at the end of this article.
Click the "Click to Show or Hide Citations and References" at the end of this article.
Scroll down to the second major bullet where we describe "Carson Dunlop Weldon & Associates'Technical Reference Guide to manufacturer's model and serial number information for heating and cooling equipment
" - the company's contact and sales information is there as a hyperlink, and they have generously provided a code (capital letters, bold face) that will get you a small discount on the price of that manual.

Normally we'd look up the Magic Chef model number decode for your unit in our copy of Carson Dunlop's Technical Reference Guide (listed in the references section at the end of this article) but I'm working on assignment out of office for a time. You can
- contact Magic Chef and ask them directly
- pick up a copy of Carson Dunlop's Technical Reference Guide (recommended)
- pick up a copy of Preston's HVAC decoding guide (absurdly expensive, more details)
Typically on older Magic Chef AC equipment the year and place of manufacture are in the end of the serial number; the BTUH capacity is in the model number but may be encoded.
Determine if the compressor is a 1-stage or 2-stage unit from the data tag?
Hi Dan. Great Info. Do you know if there is way to determine whether the compressor is a 2 stage or 1 stage unit based on looking at the data plate? Thanks a lot, Andy - Carson Dunlop. On 2012-05-08 by Andy Tran
Reply by (mod) -
Andy, the compressor type may be coded in the model number for some manufacturers. If you pass on that data to me, better yet, with a sharp focus photo of the data tag(s) I'll see what I can find.
