On 2020-12-16 by (mod) - why are some lights and receptacles (wall outlets) dead in my mobile home?

Wes

Most likely there is an electrical box or junction box at the start of the circuit that enters that room and that is powering your lighting circuits that has a burned or open electrical connection. It may be in a switch box or an electrical receptacle box. Your electrician will trace the circuit to find the damaged connection.

Meanwhile it would be safest to leave that circuit off in the electric panel

I own a 1980's double wide mobile home. I recently went into one bed room and the lights wouldn't come on. I replaced the the bulb and it still didn't come on. So I bought a new light switch and it still didn't turn. So I started checking all the switches and outlets in the room.

There is no power at all in that one room. Just that one room. All the the other rooms in my home are good. Any ideas of what could cause this problem? I replaced all the circuit breakers in my box. stiil no change.

On 2020-06-14 - by (mod) - no water after electricity was cut off - pump prime trouble

Mobile home caravan trailer doublewide electrical hookup (C) Daniel FriedmanLucyb.

Unfortunately sometimes it takes a loss of electrical power to show us that there was a pre-existing problem with a leaky foot valve in th well. When there's power, the foot valve leaks, and when no water is being used in the home water leaks back down into the well, pressure drops, and the pump turns itself on and recovers before it's lost prime.

But during a power outage that lasts long enough for the pump to drain completely back into the well, the pump is then sitting there dry and thus has lost prime - it can't draw water.

You can re-prime the pump - PRIME the PUMP, HOW TO

and recover water service temporarily, but what's needed is to find and fix the leak that can be in the pump itself, in the well piping, in a check valve, or in the foot valve, a check valve at the bottom of the well piping.

On 2020-06-12 by Lucybelle

When we had the electricity cut off
To our moble home the water also stopped inside the home. Pump is working and supplying the fausets not attached to home but no water anywhere In or Connected to home after the electricity was turned back on.

On 2020-06-08 - by (mod) - where to get a new circuit breaker

Dee:

Your electrician and or local electrical supplier can pretty-much always provide the right brand and model circuit breaker for your panel.

but the oven wouldn't work then my dryer worked one min next it didnt I got a used dryer it worked for 3 mins next it stopped heating? I'm so worried

On 2020-06-07 - by (mod) - other lights off after installing a new ceiling fan

Missi

I suspect that in the same electrical junction box where someone found the ceiling fan wires there was or were one or more additional wires that originally were spliced into the same circuit to bring power to the laundry / bath / kitchen (which argues that the circuit is badly overloaded).

Watch out: an immediate concern is if you or whoever hooked up the ceiling fan left bare live wire ends un-capped inside the electrical box. That's a shock or fire hazard.

Ok so we took a ceiling fan down in our trailer and put a new one up works great but now I have no lights in the bathroom laundry room or kitchen what happened?

On 2020-06-06 - by (mod) - electrical wiring details for a Dutch mobile home

Donna

I don't know, and, disappointing, checking the Dutch Housing company website https://www.dutch-housing.com/

I see lots of brochures, but not one iota of specifications for the company's products (both modulars and manufactured housing, i.e. mobile homes). To be clear, the present company does not report having anything to do with a Dutch brand mobile home built in 1990. The company's website addresses nothing before 1991. Quoting:

Founded in 1991 in the Amish country of LaGrange, Indiana, ... Dutch Housing offers both single-section and multi-section manufactured homes built to the HUD code as well as modular homes built to state or local codes.

The company provides contact information links but says, for owners of existing Dutch mobile homes, that information and support is provided for owners of homes built in Indiana and After 2010.

However all is not lost.

It is trivially easy for you or your electrician to see if your Dutch mobile home from 1990 is supplied with 220 Volt service, by looking at the electrical panel. It may be possible to know right away: if see double-pole circuit breakers such as often power a clothes dryer or electric range, then 220V is or was supplied; A two pole main circuit breaker is another easily-seen feature.

An electrician can remove the panel cover and check the actual wiring to the home to confirm working 220V.

Details are at AMPS VOLTS DETERMINATION

And beginning at MOBILE HOMES, DOUBLEWIDES, TRAILERS

you will find an extensive library of articles on troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing mobile homes.

Thanks for asking.

On 2020-03-05 - by (mod) - signs of a bad circuit breaker

Jeff

That sounds like a defective circuit breaker - OR - the breaker has actually tripped and you're re-setting it when you switch it off and then back on.

There could be an overcurrent on one circuit (or less likely, more than one) causing this underlying problem, but none of that's a reason to re-wire the whole home.

What is the electrical panel brand?

On 2020-03-04 by Anonymous

@Anonymous, the main breaker is on, but not working until I flip it. The electric comes right back on.

My mobile home was built on 1973, and the wiring is old. I've had new outlets put in almost everywhere. One electrician flatly told me the best thing to do would to be rewire it, but who has $8000 lying around?

It's not aluminum wiring.

On 2020-01-10 by (mod) - What should the main breaker on the power pole be ?

The main breaker size needs to be matched to the size of the electrical service being provided. That in turn is determined by the smallest in capacity of the service entry cable or the electrical panel itself.

On 2020-01-04 by (mod) -

Loven

Watch out: fooling with electrical wires if you're not familiar with proper and safe electrical wiring can shock or kill you or burn down the house.

Normally to hook up another light you'd need to

1. find the electrical circuit nearest the area

2. install a junction box or electrical receptacle (wall plug outlet) to connect the light

3. white = neutral, black = hot

On 2020-01-04 by (mod) -

Tim

What electrician would do in this case is to trace the circuit backwards to find an open connector or damaged wire that is Upstream from and intended to feed the part of the circuit that's dead. She might also begin at the paddle and go forward if you know what the circuit is.

That means opening each junction box or receptacle box or light switch if necessary or lighting fixture whatever's on the circuit to look for a broken wire or bad connector. It could be a problem in the run of the wire but that's less common.

If your electrical wiring is undamaged that is the insulation is not cut and there are no signs of overheating or discoloring and it's probably fine

1999 Fairmont/ Stratford Limited model. I am in process of sealing HVAC vents at the junction between the rigid fiberglass ducting and the horizontal metal vents that come up to the floor.

In removing the old glass tape/mastic pieces hanging by rust and I just found wiring running parallel to the horizontal ducting under the floor

. I am not surprised that wiring runs below the floor but should it run so close to the ducting? Its not inside the ducting thank goodness but right alongside. Is this common?

Does the placement of the wiring below the floor matter or can it just run anywhere? Difficult to see in the picture. The wiring is right behind the dangling failed tape/mastic I'm busy removing and replacing. Am I overreacting? I hope so...

On 2018-08-11 by (Mod) - mobiile home electric meter says power is OFF

The photo of your meter shows that power is off to the electric meter.

If the electric company says that power is being delivered to the site then I agree that somewhere between the electric company's service drop and your meter someone has opened the supply.

You should tell the electric company that the smartmeter reads "OPEN" and that it's possible that the service delivery is unsafe as someone may have modified it. If the company finds that the electrical service has been improperly modified they will probably shut down the whole site - provoking action.

David, this sounds to me like electrical wiring that is unsafe. I would have banned in the entire circuit and have a license electrician or someone

On 2018-06-17 by David

I have a 1970s skyline single wide. I have lost power to 6 outlets and 3 lights. I have switched off the breaker as I am attempting to trace the issue. Now on this skyline a previous owner added on to it. He added a plug on to the above circuit. This plug powers 2 of the above receptacles. I just discovered this today.

The cord used is a 700 kv wire. The male end of it is charred. I'm unable to access this particular plug (female end) right now. If my knowledge of parallel circuits is correct the female plug is causing issues. In the master bed room. I replaced all 3 receptacles. Plugged my fluke in with the breaker on and got .8 vac. Turned the switch on and got 8vac.

On 2018-05-17 by (mod) - 2011 mobile home been using generator non stop almost for nearly 5 months

Denice

The situation you describe sounds UNSAFE to me, risking a fire, shock, or even death by electrocution - since we don't know what happened or why your electrical system generator and wiring have stopped working. For example if an electrical wire has come loose or is burned or shorted there could be fire or shock hazards.

If your well pump was a 220V motor and it's now getting just 120Volts then the motor may be damaged by running at half voltage.

Turn off the electrical system. Call a licensed electrician to find and fix the wire or generator problem.

Let me know what you're being told and I may be able to offer more specific suggestions or to tell you follow-up questions to ask.

You can also attach a photo of your generator and wiring connections to the home to comments - that may permit us to say more.

You may be able to borrow an electrician' s dish tape, a semibrifid wirebused to pull a wire through a ceiling or wall.

On a typical ceiling supporting joists run the short distance between the long walls. If your hom is built similarly your fish tape may push from a hole at the start side to a receiving cut almond the ceiling at t he wall opposite.

On 2018-02-18 by Running new wire in ceiling

Hi I have a 1976 homestead home. My ceiling is made up of 13’ x 12”ish ceiling panels (weird drop ceiling tiles).

My issue is how do I run a new wire from one wall, through the ceiling and end up on the opposing wall? I don’t think I can remove the panel as it would more than likely fall apart.

There is a decent amount of insulation above the ceiling as well. Hoping I don’t have to go under the house, any advice is greatly appreciated.

On 2017-10-09 by (mod) - loose electrical connection

Katie,

It sounds to me as if there is a loose electrical connection in at least one of the electrical boxes or receptacle boxes comprising the circuit involved, or possibly, depending on where your electrical panel is located, the problem could be at the breaker for that circuit or at the neutral wire for that circuit in the panel box.

Your electrician will identify the circuit involved, then trace it to look for and correct the loose (and unsafe) connection. She might start by looking first for boxes closest to where you were pounding.

On 2017-05-15 by (mod) - DIY electrical wiring is dangerous

Chuck,

Understanding that it's more-expensive to call a licensed electrician, I worry that people trying to do their own electrical wiring may not realize that there are risks of both fire and death by shock.

About the ceiling fan removal and wires there, normally black are "hot" wires and white are "neutral" wires. You wouldn't connect black to white directly as that'd be a short circuit that could injure you or at best blow a fuse or trip a circuit breaker.

It does sound as if there are multiple circuits in the electrical box you describe, but it's also the case that it would be quite unusual for a wiring mistake in one junction box to take down ALL of the lights and electrical receptacles (plug-ins) in a singlewide home. So I suspect that either there are fuses blown/circuit breakers switched off, or that there are other electrical wiring snafus too.

On a simple light fixture there will be 3 wires: black, white, and bare copper ground that normally will connect to black (hot), white (netural), and bare ground wires in the electrical box.

Sometimes to add a switch to a ceiling light fixture the electrician runs a pair of wires black and white, from the ceiling box over to a wall switch.

In this case BOTH black and white are actually going to serve as hot wires. Back in the ceiling box the black hot wire that would have connected directly to the light fixture is instead interrupted: the black-white wire pair is used to take the black hot to and from the switch.

Then back in the ceiling box the wire returning from the wall switch connects to the black wire on the light fixture. IN this case good practice would require the electrician to mark the white wire - being used as a switched hot wire - with black tape to indicate to you and me that it was not a neutral wire but instead is a switch wire.

I have a older single wide and none of the lights or none of the plugins work. The people that lived there before me took the ceiling fan down and put a regular light up and it was not hooked up properly.

On 2017-01-26 3 by (mod) - is it legal to lay the last foot of heating ducts on wood under a mobile home?

Sorry that you're annoyed Chuck. I understand the expectation for immediate answers. Sometimes, with a great many readers, the volume of questions can be more than we can answer right away.

From just the text in your question I can't say that I actually understand the situation.

However, particularly because there could be serious fire hazards if your wiring is improper and unsafe, I agree that you want to know that.

Do you think that you could call the local building inspector and ask them to take a look. Please do keep us posted.

Anon you'd need an onsite electrician to trace the circuits from the switch box or from the panel for your home. But first I'd check outdoor lights - that may be another light or even a switched indoor or outdoor receptacle.

Check also your breaker panel to see if any breakers are tripped.
