This WATER PRESSURE PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS TABLE series provides a table giving step by step checklist for diagnosing water pressure, water pump, and water well problems.
We give diagnostic and repair procedures for both municipal water supply problems and well water supply problems.
We also provide an ARTICLE INDEX for this topic, or you can try the page top or bottom SEARCH BOX as a quick way to find information you need.
These questions & answers about how to diagnose periodic or intermittent loss of water pressure were posted originally at TABLE 2: PUMP RUNS, WEAK or NO WATER PRESSURE - a table listing things to check: be sure you try the advice given there.
On 2019-01-09 by (mod) - plenty of water but pump pressure poor
I would check the voltage being delivered to the pump, the current draw of the pump, and if those look normal I might check the pump impeller for damage and the bearings for overheating.

Sounds as if your pump out rate exceeds the rate of water flowing into your well - your well is being exhausted.

Our farm pump system with a foot valve at the end of the suction line to a Davies pump is playing up.
Pump has been serviced and pumping well, but after working for a short time the water pressure on gauge drops right down and there is a very low volume of water coming through, so troughs take ages to fill.
Any idea why this is??
On 2018-09-27 by (mod) - pump won't lift water
Sam I'm flying a bit blind here but if the motor runs and the impeller is fine but the pump moves no water I suspect either lost prime or an air leak.
Or of course the source could be out of water.

Hi,
i have got a diesel powered 3 inch southern cross pump that will pump 700 meter but wont pump it up in to a tank at the end of the line.
It has been working fine for the past 6 month, then all of a sudden it stops, i have pulled impellor off and it is fine no blockages.
On 2018-05-18 by (mod) - bad water pressure at just some fixtures
When you have water pressure at some fixtures but not others, or have hot pressure but not cold pressure, then the problem is not the pump but more likely a blocked or closed valve or section of piping.

the pump was replaced about 6 weeks ago. but washer will not fill up but water still drips in washer. and at times no cold water in bathtub..

On 2018-04-14 by (mod) - pump doesn't turn on when pressure drops
IF the pump doesn't turn on when pressure drops below the cut-in pressure I suspect the pressure switch is clogged with debris or otherwise defective.

The tank air pre-charge - with no water pressure in the system - needs to be set to 2 psi below the pressure switch CUT-in pressure.

I changed pump and tank and its only pressuring up to the cut-on pressure of 30 lbs and kicks on for about three seconds by itself no tap open??? Thanks for advice. I'm thinking pump should be returned?
On 2017-06-04 by (mod) - pressure switch doesn't trigger pump
Rob,
A reasonable guess for the problem you are describing is a debris clogged or sticking pressure control switch.
If there is sediment or rust in the water supply, those can plug the opening into the bottom diaphragm on the pressure control switch which causes it to fail to respond as it should to a drop in water pressure.
I would replace the pressure control switch and I would be sure that there is no debris clogging the tube or a small diameter pipe that conducts water pressure to the switch.

As water is running, pressure lowers at a slow steady rate from 50 to the lower 30's then all of the sudden drops to 0.
The pressure switch won't trigger until a minute or so later. And then fills again. Pressure doesn't change unless we're using water so I know there aren't any leaks or backflow problems. I can't explain that sudden drop in pressure. Any ideas?
On 2017-05-25 by (mod) - pump can't reach shutoff pressure
If the pump cannot reach shutoff pressure there are several causes such as a damaged impeller or pump motor or low voltage to the pump. A more complete list of causes and cures can be found in an article you'll see if you would please use the search box just above to find the InspectApedia article

It is set to 32/50.
Replaced all this cause old one was doing the same .

The water pressure on all of the faucets in the house is really low
Just replaced the pump, the control box, the wiring and the pipe in a 400 got deep well. it worked great for about a week but now I am only getting about 26psi of pressure. I replaced the circuit breaker and the pressure switch and check valve too please help I have run out of ideas.

Crystal Please search InspectApedia for WATER PUMP WONT STOP RUNNING to see the best diagnostic suggestions for a pump that can't reach cut-off pressure.
I can't say if the issue here is a piping leak, low voltage, or a control issue.

We have a deep well, just replaced the pump, had a hard time getting it up to pressure. Got it to 50, checked for water, ran for a few seconds then no pressure at all, just a light stream of water from the faucet. Any ideas?

I am having to prime my well pump manually. It's not that big of an issue, I know how to do it but its annoying.
The real issue is that once primed and pressure raised to 60psi(it struggles to do so), water will come out of my garden hose once turned on, but not getting any water to the house. I am needing to know if it's an issue with the pump or the well itself.
