Thanks for asking, Michelle:

The age is of a John Wood water heater is usually encoded in either the first four digits (recent heaters) or the last four digits (older John Wood heaters) of the serial number.

From your John Wood water heatre's serial number

Serial # 9209417624

my guess would be YYMM417624 or 92 09 or 1992, September based on the first four digits in the serial number

@Valerie Beaton,

Your John Wood heater is 2007 ("07") which makes it a mere 12 years old which isn't bad since the new ones seem to die out about that time.

Would you please tell me the year of my hot water tank. Thank You

@orien major,

Close. Using the four numbers after the letter, then the year of yours is 2003 ("03") not paying heed to the insignificant month 04 followed after... therefore yours is 16 years old here in 2019.

Your heater is quite young compared to my John Wood that was made in 1993 (yes, that's right, 26 years old!), but I'd replace the sacrificial/anode rod, check your pressure relief valve and drain the tank of sediment.

I'm willing to bet your water intake plastic tube is broken off as well. I did the apparent first ever service last month here in 2019 and had to replace the aforementioned parts along with a new drain valve and water shut off valve... small price to pay for keeping my heater running for more good years. I'll only replace it if it springs a leak. ;-
