On 2018-01-25 by (mod) - where to start when we don't see an obvious sewer gas leak

I'd be tempted to ask for a pressure test of the vent piping. A smoke test will not show up a poor or leaky connection in a dry vent in a wall or ceiling.

On 2018-01-25 by Anonymous

The odor is downstairs in one of the bedrooms and hallway leading upstairs. All p traps checked , it intermittent . Really bad 4 months ago now just light in the same place . Always same place .

On 2018-01-25 by (mod) -plumbing vent top elbows, filters, wind deflectors

Anon / Jerry:

There are both vent top filters and vent top wind-operated elbows that keep the vent opening facing downwind that can be retrofitted to plumbing vent stacks.

You don't say where the septic odor is being detected. There can be other causes.

And pouring water down the vent pipe

On 2018-01-25 by jerry

Hello, We have had a consistent problem with septic odor , After a smoke test , camera telling everything if good and four plumbers , the latest suggestion is to put a 90 degree outside on the vent pipe facing east . Is this viable , would this help. Any answer would be appreciated.

Yes that should be fine provided you're successful - I don't want to end up with a vent filled with solid ice.

Is the pit cover sealed?

On 2017-12-30 by Larry

I have a sewage smell that is coming from a sewage ejection pump in the basement.

The smell is not constant and we have not had any issues for months. We first smelled it two years ago when it was cold and raining. Then nothing since then Now we have had a stretch of subzero temperatures we are getting the smell again. Any thoughts here?

On 2017-12-20 by (mod) -

Beth,

Perhaps, though skunk odors are pretty distinctively due to skunks.

On 2017-12-19 by Beth

We have recently started smelling a faint skunk/natural gas odor outside, near the septic system. I have not smelled it inside the home, only outside, in that general area. We do not have any gas appliances. Everything is electric. Can a septic system cause that smell?

If so, is that normal? It is not the rotten egg smell.

My husband took his gas/flammable detector and only detected it by the small hole/vent in one of the risers. He had to put it basically on top of the vent to detect anything. We figured that was normal.

Mike

Before tackling a vent problem I'd replace the wax ring sealing toilet to the sewer pipe flange.

On 2017-12-17 by (mod) - How do you know who to call for a sewer odor problem?

Theresa,

Often an experienced plumber can help diagnose sewer odor problems by examining for a blocked drain, defective vent piping, or evidence of a failing septic system.

The next step is to have the septic system examined by a septic contractor. Often that starts by inspecting the septic tank and baffles.

See SEPTIC FAILURE CRITERIA - https://inspectapedia.com/septic/Septic_Failure_Signs.php

On 2017-12-17 by Theresa

How do you know who to call. I also bought a home that has septic smell with wet weather & cold month and gets better in summer.

We have had our septic tank emptied & had a plumber to the house who replace a vent in the garage ubpner one of the bathrooms but smell is unchanged.

Also gets worse with the shower being ran in that same bathroom due those weather times. I don't know who else to have look at it. Septic emptied & plumber came who else do I try?

On 2017-12-13 by Mike K

I’m having a sewer gas smell in my water closest from the toilet, it flushes fine and gets daily use.

I’m on city sewer and city water, my house is 19 Year’s old as well. The toilet resides on the 1st floor and the house is on a slab. The toilet was replaced by the previous homeowner and cut premium brand and model.

I have tried replacing the wax ring seal with another wax ring as well as tried the foam type with no positive results.

Could this be caused by a vent issue ? The double sinks, tub and shower drains don’t emit any smell so it’s only the toilet in the one bath. Any comments would be helpful.

On 2017-11-02 by Bill

Thanks for you comments. When the next plumber came out he found that water was again in the vent pipe. And this gentleman was a plumber. We talked about grade because I had referenced the International Plumber spec's. The last plumber did place a support but another area was sagging.

And you guessed it, it was full of water. Because the vent that was tied into had restricted space there was no grade because the tie in to the piping over the bathroom was so high up that there was little to no grade. The piping over the bathroom was cut off and reduced by approx. 10 inches. The new piped had at least 12 inches in grade.

The smell has gone away but the proof in the pudding is will is stay away. I believe in the case the problem may have been fixed. No grade, ( and I believe the spec requires 1/8 per foot) I now have 12 inches over 15 feet.

On 2017-11-01 by (mod) - solar panels needed to move the vent

Bill

You have already done some good detective work.

I suspect that the modified vent is inadequate, possibly length, diameter, or blockage, though a less common problem could be at open connection in the vent piping in the wall or ceiling.

Less likely, an in glued joint problem could have been there earlier but didn't show up until the pipe was flexed or moved around.

On 2017-11-01 by Bill

I had Solar Panels put on my roof and in the process the vent for our bathroom was in the area the Solar Panels were going to be placed.

We have never had any sewer smell in the bathroom that this vent is connected to. After the installation of the Solar (Feb) we started noticing the smell. Inspection in the attic revealed a vent pipe directly into the attic. T

his was replaced and the pipe for the vent was routed to another vent on the other side of the house (approx. 15 feet away) this was in May.

In Oct the smell came back. I had another plumber come in to see what the problem was and he found that the piping which was run to the other vent had no support and sagged and filled with water. Out came the Solar plumber again and he raised up the sagging piping this seem to help but every now and again we would smell the sewer.

Summer came and the problem went away.

Well it is Oct and the smell is back. I have torn out the sheet rock on the vent coming into the bathroom and could not see anything (visual) but when I pulled out the sheet rock I could smell the sewer and at this point I can start smelling sewer in the bathroom in the basement (above our first source of smell).

Well they are coming back out to trouble shoot again. What are your thoughts.

Most likely the problem is one of those discussed in the article just above.

For the last couple of years during the months of roughly January through March when it rains a lot we get a sewer smell in our house that normally starts at one end of our home in the main bath and bedroom/closet that is right next to it. Then as rain persist it goes throughout most of the rest of the house.

What can be the problem and is it dangerous? We are on a septic system as well. Thank u for a response on how we might fix it.

On 2017-02-23 by (mod) - sewer odor problem in mobile home

I can't guess safely about your health from just the information in your question, Anon, but indeed exposure to raw sewage or to sewer gas is a health risk.

Keep in fresh air and keep the kids out of and away from sewage spills, backups, or septic tanks.

I've had a sewer problem for about 3or 4 days now and I have kids in the mobile home we have kept windows open all day and night they are coming in the morning to fix it hopefully should I be worried about our health

On 2017-01-31 by Anonymous

Jay

I don't know what you're seeing though your description sounds as if there may be a sewer line leak.

If so, it's probably not healthy and probably a violation of local health codes. Check with your health or building departments and ask them to take a look.

Watch out: leaks in underground piping systems can also cause cave-ins or sudden subsidences, so there could be other unsafe conditions too.

L.
Regarding sewer odors in your condo, if sewer gas or bacteria are entering the building that's likely to be unsafe.

Start by reviewing your concerns with your doctor.

If she is of the view that something in the building is contributing to an illness it may be appropriate to consult your local health department, the building management, and to hire an expert to find or diagnose the source. Search InspectApedia for WHEN TO HIRE AN EXPERT for more help.

Out side my condo complex there is running water down the hill. At night when it's cold a steam comes out of a crack in the parking lot that the water is running from and it smells like sewage. What do I do? What is it?

On 2017-01-25 by L.

My bedroom is right above my condominium buildings sewage ejection pumps.

My bed is is located literally, right above the system. The building turned 100 years old this year, I've been living here for about 15 years. The flooring is original hard wood floors that bounce in some places where you walk...

we do have a termite problem. I smell sewer smells all the time, when it's cold, when it rains, an when the temperature is very hot. Every since i've moved here I've been depressed, horrible migraines and headaches, and just feeling sickly.

I went to the doctor because of sores in my nose, something i have never experience in my 60 years, my depression has gotten so bad that i didn't leave the house for years, I stopped working because anxiety issues.

I've put all this burden on my husband, because we really need a two income family. I am convinced that sleeping and smelling this horrible sweet smelling oder constantly is the cause of my problems. I'd like to know if I am right? and do I call a city inspector, or some other department of the city? Because complaining to the home owners here does not work in my favor. Thank, you LT

On 2017-01-11 by (mod) - air coming out of the drain pipe

Darin,

I think that you have already diagnosed the most likely cause of the odor complaint that you described. That is, I suspect that there are no traps on those for drains.

On 2017-01-11 by darin

I have had a problem for 5 years now. I have 3 drains in my basement. i have been getting a sewer smell coming from these 3 drains every year but only in the winter time. The drains all drain the water and have never been backed up. My washer runs into one of the drains so it gets plenty of water.

Im assuming there is no trap because 30 gallons of water can be dumped into the drain and i can feel air coming out of pipe.

It is very strange that it is only in the winter, i determined that maybe my furnace is pulling in air from the drains. i have even taken a water hose and sprayed water down the vent pipe on roof of house.

I think there is no traps on my basement drains is this possible. House was built in 1968. I also noticed today we were getting 30 mph winds and i could see water from in my toilet moving rapidly as if the wind is somehow affecting air in my pipes. the drains run to a septic tank, and then to a leach bed , the leach bed was put in 5 years ago.

On 2017-01-10 by (mod) - ejector pump odors

Could be leaks at the ejector pump or its piping, or a bad check valve. Or a frost-clogged or frozen plumbing vent.

When the weather gets cooler or wet you can smell the septic system around the house and sometimes in the bathroom.

I had the tank pumped less than 2 months ago. The tank is about 25 feet from the house but the drain lines are over 300 feet from the house. No smell anywhere else or noticeable leaks. Why does the smell come back up to the house and in the house?

On 2016-04-27 by (mod) - bad smell from the woods

Robert: the woods smell and the vent stack smell are not likely to be related unless in the woods is a failed septic system that is connected to your house drain system.

Superficial deodorant treatments are not likely to be effective. I'd want to find the odor source and understand what it is and thus how to remove it.

My email address is rob16158@gmail.com..feel free to message me please.. Concerning bad smell from low lying wooded area..

We have a bad smell coming from the woods behind our house this year.. we bought our home in 2014.. we have had a pungent smell coming from our vent pipe since before moving in.. but not always...this year its been really we and rainy and heavy snow..also with the drainage our property in back is where most of the run off from surrounding properties drain...

well the woods also has heavy leaf cover..which i have tried to maintain by moveing the leaf cover and falling sticks and branches from the areas that drain...but now this year with so much rain and run off the water is not draining into the soil from just too much saturation... anyhow...

we have a really bad smell when the wind blows from the woods area in the back of our home now...beaides cleaning the leaves and sticks out of the normal draining "slots"..is there something i can do to treat the area or areas to lower the smell...

this area or areas is to big to rake up all the leaf litter...its actually woods that are low lying.. the water apparently had been sitting on the surface all winter now..and with all the rain its saturated so much that its not leaching into the soil...and its not running off very well... can i treat the areas that looks and smells bad with something to help reduce the smell....?

I appolagize for the lengthy discription... But..

i figure it may or hopefully it may help you to help me and my family...We have cookouts and bonfire with friends and family... and the smell when the wind blows from this patch of woods is almost sickening...so you can understand my delema..Sincerely..

The property owner owns the septic tank

On 2016-04-06 by Anon2

Thank you for the response. I will post back after I check the vent pipe on the roof, as that is the vent that I can find. Should I contact sewer company and have them check their side? Also, if the problem is at the septic tank, who is responsible for the actual tank?

On 2016-04-05 by (mod) - History of backing up sewer

History of backing up sewer suggests to me that that may be where the problem lies. But bubbling toilet suggests a blocked vent and perhaps a drain that siphoned water out of the bowl.

On 2016-04-05 by Anon2 - Odor, toilet bubbles when using shower

I have similar issue. Odor, toilet bubbles when using shower (not all the time ) odor smell when cold is worse.

Have tried diy things to see if traps are causing but smell remains. Have not had chance to check stink pipe on roof yet. Had sewer snaked when bought place as it backed up and would not flush, or drain.

Toilet bowl bubbled once while in shower, and all the water went out of bowl. A flush started to overflow, did while shower was still running. Smell is terrible, any help would be appreciated.

On 2016-03-26 by (mod) - add a check valve to stop sewer odors?

Anon:

Plumbing vent lines near the roof won't normally include a check valve. More likely your probe struck a pipe elbow or the edge of a pipe coupling.

I don't understand what you mean by a "toilet won't hold water" - if water really will not stay at normal level in the toilet bowl then the bowl may be cracked. Other causes of low toilet bowl water are however consistent with a blocked drain: slow drains can siphon water out of traps and toilets as can blocked plumbing vents.

Ask for help from a plumber who can diagnose and perhaps un-clog a blockage in the sewer line.

On 2016-03-26 by Anonymous

I think my vent line is blocked. However when I went on the roof to probe the vent there is something hard that sounds like metal about 4 feet down from the top.

Is there something like a check valve in the pipe that may need replaced. I have lived in this house over 40 years and never had a problem. The toilet will not hold water and when I run sink or shower water bubbles up in toilet.

On 2016-02-21 by (mod) - rule out a dead animal problem.

Good but strange question, Anon. I don't know. If this problem has been going on for many months I'd rule out a dead animal problem.

It is certainly worth researching the original footprint of the prior house and septic system - or perhaps cesspool or drywell that may have been installed. If one of those was not properly emptied and filled in, it would be possible for rainwater to enter it and gases that are both smelly and potentially unsafe to enter the home.

I doubt it's worth the cost of ground scanning radar or other equipment but if you knew that the prior tank was steel that might make it easier to find.

Research on who did excavation and site work might lead to someone who knows who worked there and what they did. If you approach that question with care and tact so as not to scare someone about liability you might get some information. Keep me posted.

Our house is 14 years old and has a septic system. When it is rainy out the basement smells like sewer gas. The problem is that the smell is not coming from the sewer. The bathroom and all sewer lines are at the opposite end of the house.

The odor comes from a bedroom and store room, both rooms have no sewer or vent pipes. We are wondering if they build this house over the old septic system of the house that was here before the new house was built. How do we find out?

On 2016-02-20 by (mod) - same odor indoors and outside

Anna

I agree that a good diagnostic is noticing that the time you are smelling an odor indoors you observe the same odor outdoors.

But to double-check that the two odor complaints are really from the same source, I'd consider where indoors I'm noticing the odor.

If an outdoor odor source is entering the building, it would be odd for it to appear only at or concentrated at your own building's bathrooms. That would occur only if for some reason more outdoor air is entering the bathroom than other rooms in the home.

On 2016-02-20 by Anna

Thank you for replying. I think it's the neighbor/ neighbors. Smell comes and goes outside and in. Right now ,past few days, no smell. Also, a street nearby is where the smell starts when I'm driving home.

That's how I ended up asking here about neighbor, as same smell on my street. So I assume other street not all switched over. Thank you for such a detailed and informative answer.

On 2016-02-15 by (mod) - Is it possible to smell odor from neighbors septic?

Yes Anna, depending on the sewage gas or sewer leak quantity, location, temperature, wind condition, and other site properties, sewer odors can travel between close neighbors.

But from what you describe I would start by checking the drain waste vent piping system in your own home. A loose toilet, damaged toilet wax ring, or improper or clogged venting can cause sewer gases from your own system to enter your home. That's particularly likely if you smell the odors indoors and don't notice them at a higher level outdoors

On 2016-02-15 by Anna

Is it possible to smell odor from neighbors septic? We switched years ago to sewer system.

I know of at least one neighbor next door didn't. Here and there air isn't smelling great and with drafts in house, smell seems to get in house! I'm wondering if other neighbor never switched over to have such a smell be around.

On 2016-02-09 1 by (mod) - sewer smell when the washing machine is run

Oh Josh, darn, I've done that too - driven a post through a sewer line. You'll want to excavate at the suspect point and if you confirm the line is damaged, have it repaired before it becomes blocked and causes a sewer backup into the home.

On 2016-02-09 by Josh

Okay, I put an electric fence in my back yard. When I was hammering the ground rod in, I hit a hard spot and I have very rocky soil so I hit it again and it went through. About 5 or 10 minutes later I smelt something like sewage and noticed water on the surface and sure enough, it smelt like sewage.

It went away and smell was gone. Since then I have had the smell a few times.

Now I have noticed when we run the washing machine a lot, the smell will come back but it is inside and no water on the surface outside. The laundry room has a smell and I could smell it in the basement it was so strong. One story basement house with septic tank. Any clue what I did? I'm sure the two are connected

It is possible that inadequate or improperly-placed return air or "supply air" to your heating furnace is causing back-drafting from a nearby sewage pump, floor drain, or fixture drain. Start by having your heating expert confirm that there is adequate combustion air and adequate supply air to the duct system.

When my furnace in the basement of my house runs; I get a sewer smell in my house.

There is no sewer backup in the basement. Should the sewer hole in the basement floor be closed? It is open.

There are 2 huge pipes from the furnace going outside my house - intake, out take? There are also intake vents throughout the house. My sewer pump works great. Need your advice. Thank You !

On 2015-11-23 by (mod) -

If you've traced the odor to the sump pit then I'd be looking for

- surface or subsurface water from any contaminated source (failed drainfield, broken sewer line, neighbor's property) entering the ground water and seeping into the pit

- a broken or leaky sewer line outside the home -

so perhaps start by hiring a plumbing drain company who use a sewer line scanning camera to scope the line from your home out to the septic tank.

On 2015-11-23 by Anonymous

Thank you for response..i have not had any odor outside or saturation noticeable in the drain field, yet definitely have concluded smell becomes present inside at the beginning of cold weather(Michigan).

What would be the first steps to diagnose the issue? The smells is definitely entering the house through the drain tile coming into sump crock

On 2015-11-23 by (mod) - effect on odors when the septic tank is pumped

Dave, while pumping a septic tank is important regular maintenance, pumping the tank is never a repair for any broken condition since the septic tank is normally full of the time except right after a pump out. When you pump the septic tank there should be no back flow into the tank from the drain field.

If you hear or see stuff back for your drain field or part of it is active or saturated and in failure. That could be a source of orders or smell both outdoors at the drain field and elsewhere in the system if the tank is in fact backing up due to the blockage

On 2015-11-22 by Dave

Great article, have a long story: house built in 1994, owned since 2007. Walk out basement, with sump. Had a smell come in basement in fall of 2012. Vent and traps arw good. Septic tank is buried about 4 foot down approx 15-20 ft from basment wall, same wall that sump pump croc is on.

Due to smell, had tank pumped, was full, not much back flush seen from field direction. Smell went away. two weeks later, smell re appeared. After few weeks it went away and no problems. We discovered it is coming from where the drain tile comes into the sump crock, which I don't get run off due to elevation.

Now that cold weather has hit, whenever we use wager, the smell is back going from the sump crock area. What would you suggest as next steps, camera inspection of line out? Do not smell outside or have issues with standing water. Thanks so much.

Septic gas smells in the house only in the winter

On 2015-06-23 by Bernice - odor in the yard

In the last six weeks we have had over 16 inches of rain and a lot of standing water in the yard.

Every once in a while when I walk out in the yard near the lateral lines there is a terrible odor. We had the septic tank pumped out about a year ago. Could odor just be from excessive rain or do we have a blockage problem?

On 2015-05-18 by (mod) - flooded septic or blocked sewer line?

Michael

It sounds as if the sewage or septic system is blocked or flooded. Certainly a sewage backup is unsanitary - un-healthy. If the water smells like sewage that's a pretty good indicator. If the landlord will not respond to written as well as oral notice of a serious problem you may have to ask for help from your local health department.

need to have some one to report this to the EPA and let them come out and check this out some how the landlord tell me it is just water from the ground where it has rain so much in the area now .

Ken

If you can locate the smell to a particular bathroom, in addition to checking drains check for a loose toilet or toilet seal;

If the smell is new I'm less inclined to suspect a leaky plumbing vent pipe in a wall or ceiling, but if your home has deep snow cover or a blocked plumbing vent that can cause trap siphonage and sewer gas entry too.
