Nafco™ Floor Tile Identification Guides & Photos

Nafco 1978 vinyl floor tile (C) InspectApedia.com DiMauroHere we provide identification photographs of Nafco vinyl floor tiles, Nafco flooring packaging, and a reader's report that her tests for asbestos in Nafglo floor tiles did not detect asbestos.

Asbestos is safe and legal to remain in homes or public buildings as long as the asbestos materials are in good condition and the asbestos can not be released into the air.

Nafco is the trademark of the National Floor Products Company, Florence, Alabama.

Nafglo is apparently also a Nafco product brand, shown at the top of this page and tested for asbestos - discussed later on this page.

@Andrew DiMauro,

Thank you so much for the follow-up and asbestos test results on your Nafco and Kentile flooring. That will certainly help other readers.

I would guess your Kentile floor tiles from the last manufactured years, ca. mid 1980s.

@Inspectapedia Com Moderator, thanks for the info. I ended up getting those Nafco tiles and the 12x12 kentiles tested and they both came back negative on asbestos content

On 2022-04-06 by Inspectapedia Com Moderator (mod) NAFCO 9x9" Floor Tiles in a 1978 U.S. Home

@Andrew DiMauro,

Some of your photos showed Kentile boxes - thus my earlier comment.

Nafco: we have to do some further research, but what we know about asbestos in Nafco brand floor tiles is above on this page.

Thank you for adding the location and age of your Nafco-tiled building and any details you can guess about the age of the floor.

Also any details from the box, such as patent numbers can help date a material.

Sorry for the confusion I’m dealing with 2 Types of tile the Nafco was concerning because it’s 9x9 - other floor tiles in my first photo are Kentiles.

@Andrew DiMauro,

Thank you for those Nafco and Kentile floor photos.

If you can add sharp images of all box printing that would be helpful. One image per comment but as many comments as you need.

Some of the later-made 12" Kentiles were free of asbestos. At least one lab test found no asbestos in one Nafco flooring sample.

Readers who perform floor tile tests for Kentile or Nafco flooring are invited to contribute those test results to our data-base (use the page top or bottom CONTACT) link.

That asbestos test information will assist other readers.

Question: does Nafco flooring contain asbestos?

Nafglo floor tile (C) InspectApedia.com KellyAt page top is photo of the actual Nafglo "no-wax" floor tile.

I don't see any self adhesive floor tiles listed for Nafglo brand (National Floor Products co. Inc of Alabama). Am I using the data base correctly or is this product unlikely to contain asbestos? The tiles are cracking and loose so we need to do something.

I do have a photo of the tiles themselves but could only attach one. - Kelly 2018/10/16

Is there a date code anywhere on the package, or do you know if the tile was produced after 1985?

I attached another picture. Do you think that the 0127831 is the date stamp? I didn't notice that that number could be a date before. 01-27-83-1? Is this any help other than it being before asbestos was banned?

Moderator reply:

Opinion: with no other information about this floor and guessing that it was made in the U.S. before 1985, you should treat the floor as presumed to contain asbestos. That does not mean you should undertake a costly removal.

Normally the best approach is to leave intact vinyl or asphalt floor tiles in place and to cover them over with new flooring material.

Reader follow-up: Tests found no asbestos in this Nafco floor tile.

Thanks for your help. If we have it tested does inspectapedia want the results?

Moderator reply:

Very much so, yes; what you find will help other readers.

Daniel: We did have the Nafglo floor tile tested and it came back without asbestos. Yeah! So much easier to get rid of.

Thank you for your help with this flooring.

BTW is yours a peel-and-stick floor tile? I think I saw a peel-off paper in one of your photos.

Jeremy I can't ID the material stuck to the bottom of the carpet though the pattern looks like it may be from the surface of a vinyl floor tile. For a 1950's home you'd either treat the floor as presumed to contain asbestos, or you'd have a sample tested.

On 2019-06-19 by Jeremy

I started pulling up carpet in a 1950s home we recently purchased. The carpet is glued over this pink vinyl. Almost like a pink camouflage pattern. I looked through the site but didn't see a similar pattern. Something what your thoughts are on it. Thanks
