This article discusses Dura-Flex™ brand gray flex duct found in good condition. The article includes references to flex-duct product failures by manufacturers of similar flexible duct work products.
We include photographs illustrating heat-damaged flex-duct covering materials and we explain the implications on home energy costs when this material is installed in buildings.

Dura-Flex Gray Flexduct Field Report
The following field report on Dura-Flex gray flexible HVAC ducts is provided by home inspector and frequent InspectApedia.com contributor Eric Van De Ven. He writes:
Attached are pictures of Dura-Flex duct work, which is similar to the Owl-Flex duct work and the others. This duct work was in very good condition. The odd thing about this house, was that it was built in 1993. This is the latest build date I have seen this type of duct work. The photos provided by Eric demonstrate that at least where installed in a 1993 home in a hot climate, this flex duct had not suffered the same deterioration as that found with similar brands of gray plastic coverd flexible ductwork.
The Dura-Flex ductwork shown here was not found to be damaged.
Where ductwork is suspended over a wire or narrow sheet metal strap, watch out for reduced airflow and increased HVAC operating cost due to crimping. More "do's and don'ts" for flexible HVAC duct installation are at DUCT ROUTING & SUPPORT.
In this 1993 home we see flex duct routed through trusses supporting the roof structure. below is the connection of one end of the Dura-Flex ductwork to what appears to be an end of the air handler or of a duct trunk line.

A musty odor was associated with mold contaminated flex duct in the building. The ductwork could not be cleaned because of its fragility - an Owl-flex duct product. Sellers (correctly) asserted that the ductwork could not be cleaned. The court finding includes the statement that "OWL FLEX ductwork was uncleanable". The buyers ability to terminate the sales contract was upheld.
